Veterinarians Show Consoling Dogs Does Not Relieve Their Panic

A new study shows that dogs can get very upset during thunderstorms, whether or not their owner holds them. The study measured the stress hormone cortisol to be up to three times normal levels while the dogs heard recordings of a thunderstorm. The company of other dogs did help, though vets say medications may be more effective.

PHILADELPHIA--Do thunderstorms make your dog tremble with fear with every rumble? Thunderstorm anxiety is common among dogs, sending frightened pooches shuddering under beds or even tearing up furniture. What's really behind this pet panic?

All it takes is one rumble from a thunderstorm and Patty Nordstrom's dog, Iko, is a nervous wreck.

"Iko starts shaking and panting and pacing and is very nervous and upset," Nordstrom says. Many sympathetic owners like her try comforting pooches with thunderstorm anxiety. Now, a new study shows consoling your pet may not help.

NEW YORK - A Long Island, N.Y., family thought they got a good deal when they found a rental house for $1,000 a month - until the owner showed up and asked what they were doing there.

Nassau County police arrested Gregory Garvin on Wednesday for posing as a real estate agent and renting out the house in the hamlet of Roosevelt. Garvin was charged with grand larceny and fraud.

Police say Garvin also collected a $1,000 security deposit from the couple. The family was living in the house about two weeks when the real owner showed up.

clipper's remarks: Although this may almost sound like "non-news," to some, it is incredibly dramatic, not so dramatic as parts of the French Army joining the rebels in the French Revolution nor so dramatid as the Russian Army joining the revolutionaries against the Czar during WWI --- but it is an "officer of the law," saying he's not going to obey the law to evict people from their homes -- during this economic crisis where now home foreclosures have tripled from just two years ago.

The rather dramatic headline, though, is misleading (even though I like dramatic headlines like this myself.)

In fact, while the sheriff's actions are not so dramatic (in a way)...but his real actions are far more clever: He is Slowing Down Evictions.

This way, #1, he won't get fired. #2 his extra demands for documentation and total paperwork requirements could give folks at least a half-a-year before police would actually show up at their door.

Housing advocates said that they thought the measure was the first of its kind, but that in recent years, several sheriffs and judges around the country had taken other steps to slow foreclosure proceedings, like requiring lenders to produce titles proving they owned the properties in question. In Philadelphia this year, Sheriff John D. Green temporarily suspended sales of foreclosed properties.

Sheriff Dart said he took the measure because an increasing number of the residents being evicted were renters who might have been dutifully paying their rent, and might have had no knowledge that the owner was behind on the mortgage.

Goat 'condoms' save Kenyan herds

Maasai herdsmen in Kenya have turned to an age-old contraceptive device, the "olor", to protect their precious goat herds from an ongoing drought.

The olor is made from cowhide or a square piece of plastic, and is tied around the belly of the male goat.

It prevents the bucks from mating with the female goats.

The herdsmen are using the device to limit the goat population and ensure there are not too many animals grazing on sparse vegetation.

"We don't want them to breed in this drought," says Mr Ole Ngoshoi Kipameto, a goat owner in Kajiado district.

The area, which is 80km (50 miles) from the capital, Nairobi, has received insufficient rainfall, making the landscape barren and forcing residents to move from place to place in search of pasture and water.

"We tie this hide under the belly of the buck for three months. After that we remove it and then they can breed by November when the short rains come," Mr Kipameto says.

On a hot summer day a little over two years ago, Sycloria Williams was in the throes of an induced-labor abortion of 22-week-old Shanice when the baby delivered alive.

A clinic worker, along with Williams, witnessed Gonzalez cut the cord and place the moving, breathing baby in a biohazard bag partially filled with chlorine bleach and zip it shut.

It was that worker who developed a conscience and allegedly called police to report the crime, after which Gonzalez tossed the baby in the bag on top of the mill roof so police couldn't find her.

On Oct. 14, little Shanice Osbourne will finally be laid to rest 27 months after she was allegedly killed on the day she was aborted alive, July 20, 2006, by abortion clinic owner Belkis Gonzalez at A Gyn Diagnostics Center in Hialeah, Fla.

the baby baked in the Florida sun until Gonzalez, thinking the coast was clear, retrieved her only to have the worker call police again, who this time found the baby. DNA evidence linked Shanice to Sycloria.
