Nature and evolution have actually created a basic way for a cell to divide with a backup system that can work if the other approach fails.

The findings, Zhang said, add significantly to the basic understanding of cell biology

Tags: biology, cell biology

<clipSource>http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/09/080902221728.htm</clipSource>

"Oldest Gecko Fossil Ever Found . . Research programs around the world have tried to mimic this bizarre adhesive capability, with limited success.

<clipSource>http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/09/080902163920.htm</clipSource>

New progressive movement emerging from Denver?

clipped by: masbury
clipper's remarks: Beyond the spectacle, something deeper and more important was taking place.

Clip Source: www.alternet.org

I can also report that this spectacle actually had value

it will likely be remembered as one of many events that helped forge a contemporary progressive movement.

the convention's value was most pronounced at the interpersonal level where liberal activists kibbutzed with campaign operatives, bloggers met politicians, and -- as I saw firsthand -- potential Obama administration officials began dialoguing with Congress' most committed progressive leaders.

Standing in the hot sun on the convention's third day, I happened to be arguing trade policy with Austan Goolsbee, the moderate University of Chicago professor who is Barack Obama's chief economic adviser. The UW administration needs to wake up. Are they competitive people? Do they wake up in the morning and want to be better than the other schools in the NW in every way possible? Going to Oregon is a depressing event. Their stadium is better. Their scoreboard is better. Their practice facility is better. The gameday atmosphere is better. Their player entrance from the tunnel is better. Everything is better. Oh yeah, and their football team is running circles around our football team right now. If that doesn't burn in someone's gut over at UW, we are finished. Oregon is better than us because it burned inside of them during the 1980's that UW was better than them. They did something about it.

Tags: ware, washington huskies

<clipSource>http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/huskiesfan/archives/147664.asp?source=rss</clipSource>

Washington Husky Football - Coaching

clipped by: lp97702
clipper's remarks: This is 100% right...

Clip Source: blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com

- The Washington coaching staff is broken. The story of this game isn't just UW losing 44-10. It's Oregon Offensive Coordinator Chip Kelly schooling UW Offensive Coordinator Tim Lappano on how to run a spread offense. UW's spread offense is something from Oregon's JV squad. Similarly, Oregon's Defensive Coordinator Nick Aliotti ran a clinic on how to beat the spread. We'll give new UW Defensive Coordinator Ed Donatell a mulligan on this one but the fact remains that UW was outcoached in every way possible.

Tags: washington huskies

<clipSource>http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/huskiesfan/archives/147664.asp?source=rss</clipSource>

the dreambody

clipped by: zadoz
clipper's remarks: the cutting edge of therapy

Clip Source: www.shrinkrapradio.com

#170 - From Dreambody to Worldwork

Drs. The Coquille Tribe in southern Oregon has voted to recognize the marriage of Kitzen Branting (nee Doyle) to her non-Coquille partner Jeni Branting when they marry next May with intentions to live on the reservation.

Tribal chief Ken Tanner told the Oregonian, "For our tribe, we want people to walk in the shoes of other people and learn to respect differences. The more exposure, the more hairs snap off, and of course now we are beginning to see the effects of the 'ipod syndrome' where the volume is maxed out. Like standing next to speakers that are turned up to 11. (You might need to know about the band Spinal Tap)
There is no doubt that prevention is better than cure, but some people wont listen. Until they reach the point where they can't listen.

Clip Source: www.abc.net.au

US researchers have used gene therapy to regrow the tiny hairs in the inner ear of mice, which they say might lead to new ways of restoring hearing loss in humans.

Dr John Brigande and colleagues at Oregon Health and Science University report their findings in today's issue of Nature.

Sensory hair cells inside the cochlea, the auditory portion of the inner ear, convert sound waves into electrical impulses that are delivered to the brain.

The loss of these minute hairs, or the nerves that control them, is the most common cause of hearing impairment and so-called nerve deafness.

In most cases, damaged hair cells do not regrow in mature humans.

"Our work shows that it is possible to produce functional auditory hair cells in the mammalian cochlea.

it remains to be determined whether gene transfer into a deaf mouse will lead to the production of healthy cells that enable hearing

we have made an important step toward defining an approach that may lead to therapeutic intervention for hearing loss."

<clipSource>http://www.abc.net.au/science/articles/2008/08/28/2348815.htm?site=science&topic=latest</clipSource>

American Indian tribe to allow same-sex marriages

clipped by: wiccantexan

Clip Source: www.msnbc.msn.com

At the request of a lesbian couple, the Coquille Indian Tribe on the southern Oregon coast, in the U.S. West, has adopted a law recognizing same-sex marriage.

Tribal law specialists say the Coquille appear to be the first American Indian tribe to sanction such marriages. The red lionfish, a tropical native of the Indian and Pacific oceans that probably escaped from a Florida fish tank, is showing up everywhere <EMDASH></EMDASH> -- from the coasts of Cuba and Hispaniola to Little Cayman's pristine Bloody Bay Wall, one of the region's prime destinations for divers. Wherever it appears, the adaptable predator corners fish and crustaceans up to half its size with its billowy fins and sucks them down in one violent gulp.

"This may very well become the most devastating marine invasion in history," says Mark Hixon, an Oregon State University marine ecology expert who compared the lionfish to a plague of locusts.

By Michelle Healy

Tags: fish

<clipSource>http://blogs.usatoday.com/sciencefair/2008/08/invasive-lionfi.html</clipSource>

Testing Resources

clipped by: watermama
clipper's remarks: link to paper sample tests and pdf of 08/09 test schedule

Clip Source: www.oaks.k12.or.us

ODE Online Resouces

Oregon Assessment and Accountability
