Le sacerdoce est un appel particulier de Dieu et, pour moi, il s’est concrétisé relativement récemment, mais dans le contexte d’une vocation déjà existante au sein de l’Opus Dei depuis de nombreuses années. J’avais pris conscience que tout chrétien, par son seul baptême, a le devoir d’être un disciple du Christ sur son lieu de travail, dans sa famille, là où il vit, avec naturel et sans faire des choses extraordinaires. Mais, pour être un chrétien cohérent au milieu du monde, il faut sans cesse approfondir sa foi (on ne peut se contenter des souvenirs plus ou moins lointains du catéchisme...), s’efforcer de pratiquer les vertus (à commencer par la charité, mais aussi l’honnêteté, le goût du travail bien fait...) et nourrir une vie spirituelle intense, alimentée par les sacrements. C’est là que le rôle du prêtre se révèle indispensable : le laïc a besoin du prêtre. L’appel à devenir prêtre m’est alors apparu comme “une autre manière de servir” l’Église.

It happens from time to time that one of the members of the association is appointed to some important post in society. However, since the members of Opus Dei make their own free and responsible choices in everything they do, their achievements are their own affair and have nothing to do with Opus Dei. On one occasion in 1957 when an important person congratulated Msgr. Escrivá because a member of the association had been appointed a government minister in Spain, he received a rather curt reply, "What does it matter to me whether he is a minister of state or a street sweeper. What I am interested in is that he sanctify himself in his work." In that reply we have the whole of Escrivá and the spirit of Opus Dei: each person should sanctify himself in and through his work, including the government minister, if he has been put in that position. What is truly important is that he should really seek holiness. The rest matters little.

A federal tax filing reveals that

If you want a guiding metaphor for Opus Dei, the spiritual organization founded in Spain in 1928 by Saint Josemaría Escrivá that has become the most controversial force in Roman Catholicism, think of it as the Guinness Extra Stout of the Catholic Church. It's a strong brew, definitely an acquired taste, and clearly not for everyone.

Putting things this way immediately runs the risk of being superficial, not to mention giving offense, since Opus Dei is not a commercial product but a spiritual path that aims at the sanctification of the secular world, a path followed with great fidelity and moral seriousness by some eighty-five thousand people worldwide and admired by millions of others. AS a member of Opus Dei, I would like to thank Dan Brown and Ron Howard for "The Da Vinci Code." Why am I not outraged like so many other devout Roman Catholics? Because I think we could not have wished for a better result: critics attack the film (and, retrospectively, the book) as boring and annoying and cartoonish; and because everyone is seeing it anyway, many people who would otherwise have no interest in Opus Dei are curious, allowing us to explain what we are really about.

As news of the Da Vinci Code dominates the Today show in the hope that no one will notice that Katie Couric is leaving for really big money at CBS, Christians and people who wish they were Christians are causing chaos worldwide in protest of the new movie starring Tom Hanks.

No fewer than 7 books have been published by Protestant and Catholic scholars refuting the historical errors of the work, and they are selling at a tepid pace. Nuns are praying at the foot of the cross. Opus Dei is opening up its trade schools and inviting the press to come in and have a look around at the lives it is changing.

"I've never seen anything like it," said Frank Turk, owner of Kingdom Bound Books in Siloam Springs, AR. "Christians are completely off the chiz-ain about this. You'd think that Dan Brown's book glibly desecrated the most sacred beliefs of almost half the world population. Next thing you know, somebody's going to call for a boycott of Playstation and the Andy Griffith Show and all Aich-Eee-double-hockey-sticks is going to break loose."

Protests worldwide have resulted in innumerable costs in human lives and property damage -- because nobody has been killed and nothing has been burned or looted.

Al Jezeera released a video taped joint statement from Osama bin Laden & Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who said, "We can't compete with this kind of rampant unrest. We have suspended Jihad by order of the imam in the bottom of the well until you loopy bread-eaters get a grip. Burning embassies is one thing, but you people are making us gassy with fear!" CIA analysts have yet to make anything of the donkey-like laughter clearly heard in the backround of that recording.

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - In the latest Vatican broadside against "The Da Vinci Code", a leading cardinal says Christians should respond to the book and film with legal action because both offend Christ and the Church he founded.

Arinze's appeal came some 10 days after another Vatican cardinal called for a boycott of the film. Both cardinals asserted that other religions would never stand for offences against their beliefs and that Christians should get tough.

"Christians must not just sit back and say it is enough for us to forgive and to forget," Arinze said in the documentary made by Rome film maker Mario Biasetti for Rome Reports, a Catholic film agency specializing in religious affairs.

"Sometimes it is our duty to do something practical. So it is not I who will tell all Christians what to do but some know legal means which can be taken in order to get the other person to respect the rights of others," Arinze said.

"This is one of the fundamental human rights: that we should be respected, our religious beliefs respected, and our founder Jesus Christ respected," he said, without elaborating on what legal means he had in mind.

"Those who blaspheme Christ and get away with it are exploiting the Christian readiness to forgive and to love even those who insult us. There are some other religions which if you insult their founder they will not be just talking. They will make it painfully clear to you," Arinze said.

This appeared to be a reference to protests by Muslims around the world over cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad.
