Mystery of the 'couple' buried arm in arm 1,000 years ago: Not husband and wife but Saxon warriors

For a thousand years they have lain side by side in a rough earth grave, one throwing a skeletal arm across the other.

Believed to be Saxon warriors, they are thought to have died together and been buried together as brothers in arms.

Their return to the limelight after so many centuries comes as archaeologists work on a 90-acre site near Ramsgate in Kent before it is developed into a salad-growing complex.

At first they were taken to be a man and wife, buried some time during the Saxon period between 410 and 1066, but now that opinion has changed.

'The body on the right is definitely male.

'They are exceptionally tall, both over six feet. The one on the left has got some female traits to it but it does seem to be male.

Another poignant grave is from the Roman era and is that of a young girl - thought to be in her early teens - who died in childbirth.

For the Gallup Poll Daily tracking survey, Gallup is interviewing no fewer than 1,000 U.S. adults nationwide each day during 2008.

The general-election results are based on combined data from Sep. 4-6, 2008. For results based on this sample of 2,765 registered voters, the maximum margin of sampling error is ±2 percentage points.

Interviews are conducted with respondents on land-line telephones (for respondents with a land-line telephone) and cellular phones (for respondents who are cell-phone only).

In addition to sampling error, question wording and practical difficulties in conducting surveys can introduce error or bias into the findings of public opinion polls.

PRINCETON, NJ -- The latest Gallup Poll Daily tracking update shows John McCain moving ahead of Barack Obama, 48% to 45%, when registered voters are asked for whom they would vote if the presidential election were held today.

These results are based on Sept. 4-6 interviewing, and include two full days of polling after the conclusion of the Republican National Convention last Thursday night. McCain has outpolled Obama on both Friday and Saturday, and is receiving a convention bounce just as Obama did last week.

Tomorrow's report will be the first in which all interviews were conducted after the conclusion of the convention. Gallup measures convention bounces by comparing candidate support in the last poll done entirely before a party's presidential nominating convention begins with the first polling conducted entirely after its conclusion.

Obama knows it. He was warning American liberals to stay away from the Palin family. He understands better than his supporters that it is not a politician's enemies who lose elections, but his friends.

Back in 2005 USA Today published a list called, “The 10 Hardest Things To Do In Sports”, which has virtually gone unchallenged over the last few years.

In case you are wondering pole vaulting ranked number three on the list.

I don’t know about you, but I think to become great in the area of pole vaulting is really a difficult thing. That said, in my opinion any pole vaulting athlete that can even clear the bar deserves KUDOS! So for you beginning, intermediate, or even advanced pole vaulters, a big round of applause goes your way! You have just participated in one of the hardest things to do in sports!

For those pole vaulters who are still working on just clearing the bar…keep on trying, it isn’t as easy as it looks!

In a Zogby Interactive survey conducted last weekend, just after the McCain announcement that Palin would join his ticket, McCain Palin won 47.1% support, while Obama/Biden won 44.6% support.

The interactive survey of 2,312 likely voters nationwide was conducted Sept. 5-6, 2008, and carries a margin of error of +/- 2.1 percentage points.

McCain's favorability rating increased from 50% favorable last week to 57% favorable now, a significant jump that indicates the GOP convention was a success. Among independent voters, 61% now have a favorable impression of him, compared to just 49% who said the same a week ago.

Among the vice presidential candidates, 54% said they now hold a favorable view of Palin, while 42% hold an unfavorable view. While 49% have a favorable opinion of Joe Biden, 47% hold an unfavorable view of him.

clipper's remarks: This morning, Republicans tell me that a worker at Invesco Field in Denver saved thousands of unused flags from the Democratic National Convention that were headed for the garbage. Guerrilla campaigning. They will use these flags at their own event today in Colorado Springs with John McCain and Sarah Palin.

UPDATE I: I just spoke with the person at Invesco who found the flags and he thinks both sides are exaggerating a bit. The person claims the majority of the bags with flags in them were near the trash, on a dock, and would have been thrown away. The person thinks it was probably an “oversight” by the Democrats rather than any nefarious plot against the flag. But the person doesn’t believe anyone was coming to get them: “The flags were there for a week and a day and no one came looking for them.”

Thousands of flags from Obama's r~~evival meeting~~ ~~coronation~~ acceptance speech were destined to for recycling (or worse) before a worker at Invesco Field rescued them from the trash heap.

Doing such actions to the symbol of this country is worse than burning it in protest. Casually discarding ia flag like a used Kleenex belies a offhand indifference to what the flag stands for that is stunning to comprehend, and goes far beyond buring a flag as a protest. At least when you burn the flag, it's for a reason, and while I myself will never, ever burn a flag for any reason, if you decide it's a reasonable way to demonstrate for your cause, do so. But don't try to dodge what comes next, when others will get upset that you're burning something for which people have literally died for. Civil disobedience that breaks no laws is not civil disobedience.

But he clearly did not mean tolerance, fair-mindedness, a deep love of independence and privacy, a sense that each individual is a volunteer in society, with whom no-one has a right to interfere, and certainly not with the aim of improving him or even protecting him against his will. Mr Blair did not mean this because every illiberal instinct of his politician's body drives him in the opposite direction - the direction of ID cards, limitations on free speech, more CCTV cameras, more control, less liberty, more interference, diminution of rights, ignoring of Parliament and public opinion, and generally more corralling of the national herd into situations amenable to policing.

Palin is another story. She is an exceedingly odd choice for a party which has spent the better part of the past year loudly exclaiming that it was reaching out to Jewish voters

First, Palin has absolutely no foreign policy experience

Palin has never visited Israel and besides signing a pro-Israel resolution passed by the state legislature, she has apparently never spoken out or focused on the Jewish state.

ON DOMESTIC issues she is totally out of step with public opinion in the Jewish community.

The Jewish vote in 2008 has been a hot topic of conversation in the media. John McCain's fist major decision of this campaign - picking Palin for his running mate - leads us to believe that the Jewish community's concerns are not so high on his priority list.

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Friday shows the beginning of John McCain’s convention bounce and the race is essentially back where it was before Barack Obama’s bounce. Obama now attracts 46% of the vote while McCain earns 45%. When "leaners" are included, it’s Obama 48%, McCain 46% (see recent daily results).

Both Obama and McCain are now viewed favorably by 57% of the nation’s voters (see trends). However, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin is viewed favorably by 58%--a point more than either Presidential hopeful. Forty percent (40%) have a Very Favorable opinion of her.

Fifty-one percent (51%) of voters now believe that McCain made the right choice when he picked Palin to be his running mate while 32% disagree. By way of comparison, 47% said that Obama made the right choice by picking Delaware Senator Joe Biden as his running mate. Voters are evenly divided as to whether Palin or Obama has the better experience to be President.

But that's not the case at the CIA, FBI and the National Security Agency, where bosses are encouraging their staffs to use a new social-networking site designed for the super-secret world of spying.

"It's every bit Facebook and YouTube for spies, but it's much, much more," said Michael Wertheimer, assistant deputy director of national intelligence for analysis. The program is called A-Space, and it's a social-networking site for analysts within the 16 U.S. intelligence agencies.

Instead of posting thoughts about the new Avenged Sevenfold album or Jessica Alba movie, CIA analysts could use A-Space to share information and opinion about al Qaeda movements in the Middle East or Russian naval maneuvers in the Black Sea.

The new A-Space site has been undergoing testing for months and launches officially for the nation's entire intelligence community

Who those reporters and commentators might be she does not say, at least not in the excerpt. It will be interesting to see if they're named in that speech. There's no one I can think of, off the top of my head, who did what she is apparently complaining of tonight, but she will be doing the complaining herself.
