New Firefox JavaScript engine is faster than Chrome's V8

One of the most impressive features in Google's open source Chrome web browser is V8, a high-performance JavaScript virtual machine that was developed by a team of specialists in Denmark. Although Chrome's performance beats the current stable version of Firefox, benchmarks show that Mozilla's next-generation JavaScript engine actually outperforms V8.

Mozilla is using tracing optimization techniques and Adobe's open source nanojit to increase the execution speed of SpiderMonkey, the JavaScript runtime engine in the Firefox web browser. The new engine, which is called TraceMonkey, delivers unprecedented JavaScript performance. The new optimizations have already landed in the latest Firefox nightly builds (but still have to be manually enabled) and will likely be included in Firefox 3.1.

ActionScript™ 3, an object-oriented language based on industry-standard ECMAScript, is the language that defines the client-side application logic. Your MXML and ActionScript are compiled together into a single SWF file that makes up your Flex application. Because the compiler is available both as a standalone utility in the Flex 3 SDK and as part of Adobe® Flex® Builder™ 3 software, developers can choose to develop in the Eclipse™ based Flex Builder IDE or in an IDE of their choice.

Flex Remoting and Messaging are both now available to all developers through the open source BlazeDS project. We are happy with the results we derived, even though our method is in an early stage," said Patterson. The team plans to make the algorithms that they used in their method available to others as open-source software that is freely available on the Web.
Scientists map out the evolutionary histories of organisms by comparing their genetic and/or protein sequences. Those organisms that are closely related and share a recent common ancestor have greater degrees of similarity among their sequences.

Clip Source: www.sciencedaily.com

Scientists at Penn State have developed a new computational method that they say will help them to understand how life began on Earth. The team's method has the potential to trace the evolutionary histories of proteins all the way back to either cells or viruses, thus settling the debate once and for all over which of these life forms came first.

"We have just begun to tap the potential power of this method," said Randen Patterson, a Penn State assistant professor of biology and one of the project's leaders. "We believe, if it is possible at all, that it is within our grasp to determine whether viruses evolved from cells or vice-versa."

The team is focusing on an ancient group of proteins, called retroelements, which comprise approximately 50 percent of the human genome by weight and are a crucial component in a number of diseases, including AIDS.

Tags: life, computers, science

<clipSource>http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/09/080902095106.htm</clipSource>

Flex info 4

clipped by: norm3456

Clip Source: www.adobe.com

Flex is a free, open source framework for building highly interactive, expressive web applications that deploy consistently on all major browsers, desktops, and operating systems. Within the 38 pages, which I’ve scanned and put up, in very readable format Google gives the technical details into a project of theirs: an open source browser called Google Chrome.

The new browser takes elements from Mozilla Firefox as well as Apple's Safari Web browser to deliver what Google hopes will be an optimized Web experience.

The Chrome browser will have Google facing off against its partner Mozilla as well as its rival Microsoft for domination of the Web browser market. Chrome is geared for handling the increasingly complex and data-rich applications such as video that are accounting for an ever-greater share of Internet traffic, and that can challenge the limits of existing browsers.

Open-source projects can be just as political as proprietary code — and as vulnerable to twisting for corporate priorities. The bottom line of Google Chrome's creation? The bottom line. Google was worried that Firefox was making too much money, and Mozilla was getting too independent. Mozilla had to be stopped — and the true Firefox believers at Google had to be cajoled into doing Larry and Sergey's dirty work.

Tags: chrome, internet, explorer, firefox, mozilla

<clipSource>http://valleywag.com/5044512/what-took-google-so-long-to-build-a-browser</clipSource>

Chrome Released

clipped by: homebusinessaces
clipper's remarks: Wow - another browser.
Today google released their own opensource browser-Chrome. Like Mozilla Firefox, programmers can create unique applications for Chrome.

One new feature is that when one page stops working the others keep functioning.
I like using open source software; it enables the people who see what is needed to improve the program.

I’ll be checking out Chrome but not before I hear some reviews by some experienced users.
I’m also curious to see what plug-ins are made available. Being kinda addicted to Firefox, I certainly don’t want to lose all my special add on buttons.
The Web site for Google's new open-source Chrome browser is slowly waking up. As I first began writing this post, there was a logo, a single screenshot (below), a link to a broken video, and a non-functioning download link. The page now redirects to Google.com, though.

The company is hosting a press conference at its Mountain View, Calif., headquarters Tuesday at 11 a.m. PDT. I will be there and will live blog. Sign up for a reminder in the box at right, or just show up on Webware.com.
