Terence Alan Patrick Seán Milligan was born in India to an english mother and an Irish father who was serving in the British Army. During his teens and early twenties Spike performed as a Jazz musician and was already starting to write comedy sketches.

On his return to England during the late 1940's he continued appearances in several musical comedy acts, Spike then had a big break into the world of radio both writing scripts for and performing in the now famous 'Goon Show' with other comedy greats such as Peter Sellers and Harry Seacombe. The Goon Show ran from 1951 with the last one in 1972.

From Radio Spike naturally progressed onto TV appearing in numerous TV show including 'A show called Fred', 'The World of Beachcomber' and 'The Q Series'.

Spike also excelled in the writing of nonsense poems and verse having many books published and to his credit some of which are still taught in schools.

Spike was without doubt a comedy great and helped shape the landscape of British comedy.

For more than seven decades, Gretel Bergmann has been haunted by a recurring dream.

"I'm in the middle of the Olympic Stadium in Berlin, with 100,000 people staring at me and it's my turn to jump, but I just can't, I can't move a muscle," she says. "My legs are like jelly."

The scene never happened: The Jewish high jumper, now 95, was robbed of the chance to take part in the 1936 Berlin Olympics, which Adolf Hitler notoriously used to show off Aryan sporting prowess to the rest of the world.

Hers is the incredible story of an exceptional Jewish athlete exploited and then cast off by the Nazis, a saga complete with a last-minute rejection letter that ends with the words "Heil Hitler!" and a sexual identity scandal involving her replacement that has echoes of the recent uproar over South African runner Caster Semenya.

RIO DE JANEIRO – A massive power failure blacked out Brazil's two largest cities and other parts of Latin America's biggest nation Tuesday night, leaving millions of people in the dark after a huge hydroelectric dam suddenly went offline.

Paraguay was also affected when the Itaipu dam straddling the two nations' border stopped producing 17,000 megawatts of power, resulting in outages in Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo and at least several other big Brazilian cities, Brazilian Mines and Energy Minister Edison Lobao said.

The blackouts came three days after CBS's "60 Minutes" news program reported that several past Brazilian power outages were caused by hackers. Brazilian officials had played down the report before the latest outages, and Lobao did not mention it.

The Itaipu dam is the world's second biggest hydroelectric producer, supplying 20 percent of Brazil's electricity. China's Three Gorges dam is the largest.

President Obama squeezed in a trip to Copenhagen last month to lobby, unsuccessfully, for Chicago to host the 2016 Summer Olympics. He plans to travel to Oslo next month to accept the Nobel Peace Prize, an award that even Obama has said he does not deserve. And this coming week, he sets out on a weeklong tour of Asia.

But the president does not plan to travel to Germany to attend the 20th anniversary celebration Monday of the fall of the Berlin Wall, drawing heated criticism from those who say he's ignoring a shining triumph of American-inspired democracy.

"John F. Kennedy famously told Berliners, 'Ich bin ein Berliner.' On the 20th anniversary of the last century's most stirring triumph of freedom, Obama is telling them, 'Ich bin beschaftigt' -- i.e., I'm busy," he wrote. "Obama's failure to go to Berlin is the most telling nonevent of his presidency. It's hard to imagine any other American president eschewing the occasion."

The week-long exercise in this western Canadian metropolis also includes flyovers by Canadian and American military jets and an incident Thursday at a railway station.

The mock attack involved as many as 2,000 police officers, firefighters, government specialists and military, said Jaimie Tomlinson of Public Safety Canada.

Tomlinson said some 140 different agencies will play a role in security for the games in February, including American emergency specialists.

The Games security budget, originally pegged at 175 million dollars after Vancouver was awarded the Olympics, has ballooned to 900 million dollars.

clipper's remarks: Finishing fourth in the men's category was another American, Ryan Hall. Hall, 27, is a rising star on the world running circuit and made headlines last year by running the London marathon in a stunning 2:06:17.

Americans once dominated long-distance running, bringing home consecutive gold medals from 1970-82. Marathon legend Bill Rodgers won the New York City four years in a row from 1976 to 1979, and Alberto Salazar took walked away with successive victories from 1980-82.

The marathon, which began in 1970 with a mere 127 runners, now hosts 38,000 athletes from around the globe, according to the marathon's Web site. Known for its diverse, punishing terrain, the annual event spans all five of New York's City's boroughs, finishing in the heart of Central Park.

Keflezighi and Tulu will each receive $130,000 in prize money.

First U.S. man since 1982 wins NYC race

New York (CNN) -- For the first time since 1982, an American man won the New York City Marathon on Sunday.

Meb Keflezighi, 34, broke the tape in the 26.2-mile course with a personal best time of 2:09:15.

Keflezighi emigrated in 1987 to San Diego, California. One of 11 children, Keflezighi fled with his family from war-ridden Eritrea during its bloody conflict with Ethiopia. He became a U.S. citizen in 1998.

He won a silver medal at the 2004 Olympics and was the runner-up in the New York marathon that year.

The female champion, 37-year-old Derartu Tulu of Ethiopia, was neck and neck with Ludmila Petrova of Russia until the last leg of the race, when she sprinted ahead to victory with a time of 2:28:52.

Tulu, a two-time Olympic gold medalist in the 10,000-meter race in 1992 and 2000, won the London marathon in 2001.

The defending female champion, Britain's Paula Radcliffe, took fourth place among women.
