Vancouver prepares for Olympics with mock terror attack

Pretend terrorists released fake radioactive poison here Tuesday in a mock attack staged to prepare authorities for the real thing during the 2010 Olympic Games

The week-long exercise in this western Canadian metropolis also includes flyovers by Canadian and American military jets and an incident Thursday at a railway station.

The mock attack involved as many as 2,000 police officers, firefighters, government specialists and military, said Jaimie Tomlinson of Public Safety Canada.

Tomlinson said some 140 different agencies will play a role in security for the games in February, including American emergency specialists.

The Games security budget, originally pegged at 175 million dollars after Vancouver was awarded the Olympics, has ballooned to 900 million dollars.

Americans once dominated long-distance running, bringing home consecutive gold medals from 1970-82. Marathon legend Bill Rodgers won the New York City four years in a row from 1976 to 1979, and Alberto Salazar took walked away with successive victories from 1980-82.

The marathon, which began in 1970 with a mere 127 runners, now hosts 38,000 athletes from around the globe, according to the marathon's Web site. Known for its diverse, punishing terrain, the annual event spans all five of New York's City's boroughs, finishing in the heart of Central Park.

Keflezighi and Tulu will each receive $130,000 in prize money.

First U.S. man since 1982 wins NYC race

New York (CNN) -- For the first time since 1982, an American man won the New York City Marathon on Sunday.

Meb Keflezighi, 34, broke the tape in the 26.2-mile course with a personal best time of 2:09:15.

Keflezighi emigrated in 1987 to San Diego, California. One of 11 children, Keflezighi fled with his family from war-ridden Eritrea during its bloody conflict with Ethiopia. He became a U.S. citizen in 1998.

He won a silver medal at the 2004 Olympics and was the runner-up in the New York marathon that year.

The female champion, 37-year-old Derartu Tulu of Ethiopia, was neck and neck with Ludmila Petrova of Russia until the last leg of the race, when she sprinted ahead to victory with a time of 2:28:52.

Tulu, a two-time Olympic gold medalist in the 10,000-meter race in 1992 and 2000, won the London marathon in 2001.

The defending female champion, Britain's Paula Radcliffe, took fourth place among women.

President Obama singled out critics of the push for Chicago to host the 2016 Summer Olympics Tuesday night in New York City, saying it's a sad thing when Americans can't cheer their own country.

Obama, in New York for a series of fundraisers, told a friendly audience that he doesn't understand how anybody could root against health care reform, and even more egregious, root against the Olympics.

"What I reject is when some people sit on the sidelines and root for failure on health care, or they root for failure on reforming our energy system, or they root for failure on getting the Olympics," Obama said. "I mean, who's against the Olympics? What's up with that? You know it's a sad thing, isn't it? I mean, I don't care if you're a Democrat or a Republican, you know. It's the Olympics, come on!"

Both nations were exhausted, 100,000 soldiers were dead, and the Chaco was--as it had been and remains--a vast, useless weed patch. Likewise, Betty Williams and Mairead Corrigan (1976) and John Hume and David Trimble (1998)--the four of them were standing around when, after 500 years, the fool residents of my ancestral homeland ran out of ammo and beer.

Of course, if you go around giving prizes left and right (mostly left) for more than a century, you're bound to give some to worthy people once in a while. With the Nobel committee this usually involves the Red Cross (1901, 1917, 1944, 1963). But the Red Cross doesn't bring peace . . .

Nobel left most of his huge fortune to an endowment that funds the prizes named after himself. Beginning in 1901 five Nobels have been awarded pretty much annually. They are given for chemistry, physics, medicine, literature "of an ideal tendency," and peace. Since 1969 there's been a sixth prize, for economics--to no good effect, judging by my 401(k). I don't know enough about chemistry, physics, medicine, or literature of an ideal tendency to say whether these prizes have done harm. But the peace prize stinks.

Theodore Roosevelt got the 1906 prize for ending the Russo-Japanese War after it was over. Never mind his role in starting the Spanish-American War, an altogether less worthwhile conflict. We conquered Puerto Rico! And the 1919 honoree, Woodrow Wilson, gave us America's participation in World War I, and then, with his Versailles Treaty, he gave us everybody's participation in World War II. "Woody's World" is with us right down to the present day in places such as Kosovo.

The sash worn by Canadian athletes at the 1936 Berlin Olympics featured a swastika as part of the design.

A controversial exhibit has opened in Vancouver, depicting the Canadian team at one of the most controversial Olympics ever — the 1936 Summer Games in Berlin, staged by the German Nazi regime of Adolf Hitler.

The exhibit of photographs, documents and artifacts, which opened Thursday at the Vancouver Holocaust Education Centre, shows how Hitler's Third Reich turned the Games into a showcase for Nazi propaganda, and how Canadians became part of the spectacle.

"These games represent the first point of contact between Canada and Nazi Germany," exhibit curator Frieda Miller told CBC News Thursday.

Photos show swastikas and Nazi banners flying alongside the five iconic Olympic rings.

"[The sash] does seem striking, especially since it was carried with the Canadian flag," said Miller.

Security Council's summit on "nuclear non-proliferation and nuclear disarmament" Sept. 24 were celebrated for their "breadth and understanding" and his "appeal for dialogue in the quest for world peace." But the O-Team's careful choreography collapsed just hours later, when Iran's secret uranium enrichment facility, buried in the mountains near the holy city of Qom, was exposed.

In the aftermath, it was revealed that Mr. Obama had known about the site since January. When asked why he failed to mention the Iranian malfeasance in both of his U.N. addresses, a White House spokesman said the administration didn't want "to spoil the image of success" during Mr. Obama's debut at the U.N.

Of course, the problem isn't "image"; it's reality. And the reality is that the Iranian pursuit of nuclear weapons has continued unabated for at least a decade. U.S. intelligence confirmed that Tehran was building . . .

The U.S. dollar isn't the only currency headed to new lows. After months of drifting along in "the winds of change," America's diplomatic credibility is sinking alongside the greenback. The Obama White House and the so-called mainstream media -- preoccupied with hoopla over "health care reform," meaningless drivel about the 2016 Olympics and the vacuous award of a Nobel Peace Prize -- barely have noticed the water flooding into our ship of state.

On Sept. 17, less than a week before he was scheduled to deliver his Utopian "world without nuclear weapons" speech at the annual U.N. General Assembly seance, Mr. Obama announced that he was abandoning plans for ballistic missile defense installations in Poland and the Czech Republic. Commentators around the world drooled all over themselves commending the move as a step toward building "a new era of respect" and noting that the "initiative" would be "welcomed in Moscow."
