US swim trials for 2012 Olympics return to Omaha

(AP) OMAHA, Neb. - The U.S. Olympic swimming trials will return to Omaha in 2012, with a temporary pool again being set up inside the Qwest Center.

USA Swimming made the announcement on Thursday. The trials to choose the U.S. team for the London Games will be held June 25-July 2.

The 2008 trials were held at the Qwest Center for the first time, averaging more than 12,000 fans each night over eight days. Nine world records were set in the temporary 50-meter competition pool.

A warmup pool will also be installed inside the 17,000-seat Qwest Center in downtown Omaha. The adjacent convention center will again host a 100,000-square-foot sponsor and fan experience area.

Dubai has what it takes to host the Games

There is not one Arab flag on the list of countries that hold the honour of having hosted the Olympics. That means the Flame of the Olympics, which was first lit in Athens in the eighth century BC, and then re-emerged in the Greek capital in 1896, may have travelled far and wide to almost every country in Europe or to North America and, more recently, Asia, but it has skipped the land very close to its origin.

Two Arab contenders have now emerged to contest for the 2020 Olympics – Dubai and Doha. Doha seriously vied for hosting the 2016 Olympic Games and was not considered when the International Olympic Committee (IOC) held its first round of meetings in June last year. Immediately afterwards, Qatar announced it will bid for the 2020 Olympics.

The other cities that have already lined up to bid up for the 2020 Olympics include Durban, Cape Town, Busan, New Delhi, Toronto and Kuala Lumpur.

But Delhi has begun to emerge from the shadow of Mumbai and Calcutta, and even provokes a certain amount of jealousy.

Delhi attracts migrants from all over India (as well as some like me, from the rest of world) and is now the most cosmopolitan and fastest-growing of India's large cities.

These ruins include one magnificent cathedral-like building - three stories high - that always seems destined to topple over in the next storm. It is popular with peacocks, but I have never seen another human there.

Chinese to Boycott Web on July 1st

Chinese internet users are planning a one-day boycott of the web on July 1st to draw attention to the introduction of the controversial government-mandated internet filter on all new machines.

The boycott has a high-profile supporter in Ai Weiwei (pictured), who helped design the Bird’s Nest stadium used in last year’s Beijing Summer Olympics. Writing in Twitter he said (translated) “Stop any online activities, including working, reading, chatting, blogging, gaming and mailing. Don’t explain your behavior.”

That last request is designed so that protesters can make their point with no fear of reprisals. An individual staying off-line for the day can’t be accused of doing anything wrong, but the combined effects of all the protesters should be easily measurable. The boycott may also serve as a quiet way of making a broader political protest as July 1st is also the anniversary of the foundation of China’s ruling Communist party.

A young sprinter is on the verge of Britain's Olympic team - after he was spotted running for a bus.

Jeffrey Lawal Balogun, 23, was running late for college when he chased after the 28 bus in Bromley, Kent, four years ago.

But his natural pace was noticed by a coach from a local track and field club who happened to be walking by.

She approached Balogun and put him in touch with Clarence Callender, one of Britain's leading sprinting coaches.

With his help, the runner is now ranked sixth in the country over 60 metres and hopes to compete at the London 2012 Olympics.

"I always knew that I was fast, but I didn't really know how to get into running, " he told the Daily Mirror.

"Then one day I was on my way to college and had to run after the bus. I must have been quite fast because a girl came up to me afterwards and asked if I ran with a club."

"The ultimate goal has to be the Olympics. To win a medal would be the best feeling ever. I just wish I'd started earlier."

Her disillusionment reflects an unfortunate reality: Having fought for years to host its first Olympics in more than six decades, the U.K. is facing the daunting prospect of preparing for the Games amid the deepest economic downturn since the Great Depression. While officials say the promised £9.3 billion ($15.3 billion) budget to build stadiums and put on the show remains intact, the government has quietly scaled down plans for Britain's own team, focusing its limited resources on those sports in which it believes it has the best chance of winning medals.

2,000 year old war grave?

A 2,000-year-old mass war grave crammed with up to 50 headless bodies has been uncovered by workers building a road for the 2012 Olympics.

The Iron Age victims are thought to have been slaughtered by the invading Romans in about 43AD.

The ancient burial pit was discovered on Ridgeway Hill near Weymouth, Dorset, close to Maiden Castle, Europe's largest Iron Age hill fort.

The site is being dug to make way for the so-called Olympic Highway, an £87m relief road for the 2012 Olympics.

Dave Score, project manager for Oxford Archaeology, which is managing the dig, said it was a "remarkable and exciting" discovery.

He said: "We have counted 45 skulls so far, these are in one section of the pit, and several torsos and leg bones in separate sections of the pit."

Archaeologists are waiting to carry out radio-carbon testing on the remains but believe the skeletons were local men, killed by Roman soldiers.

The burial pit is around six metres in diameter.

clipper's remarks: What we should be angry about especially here in British Columbia is at what our own provincial government has done and is continuing to do. We needed new ferries. They were build and then sailed in from Germany. Major building projects for the up-coming Olympics. The jobs are going out of province and in some cases out of the country. These are a few examples. Even our major natural resources are being sold to foreign interests.

Canadians angered over "Buy American" rule

WHISTLER, British Columbia (Reuters) - Canadian municipal leaders threatened to retaliate against the "Buy America" movement in the United States on Saturday, warning trade restrictions will hurt both countries' economies.

The United States is Canada's largest trading partner, and Canadians have complained the restrictions will bar their companies from billions of dollars in business that they have previously had access to.

"This U.S. protectionist policy is hurting Canadian firms, costing Canadian jobs and damaging Canadian efforts to grow our economy in the midst of a worldwide recession," said Sherbrooke, Quebec, Mayor Jean Perrault, also president of the federation that represents cities and towns across Canada.
