A Wedding Party for Terrorists

Earlier this month, Israel handed over live terrorists to Hezbollah in exchange for the body parts of two dead soldiers. It wasn’t enough that Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas congratulated Hezbollah on this win. Nor was it enough that Abbas’ political party, Fatah, organized a celebration in a show of solidarity with Hezbollah. This month, on his own initiative, Prime Minister Olmert proposed the release of an additional 199 prisoners to President Abbas.

The prisoners were released at the West Bank where they were welcomed as heroes and “freedom fighters” by Palestinian flag-waivers. To boot, President Abbas threw a reception for the prisoners at his Palestinian Authority compound. Ashraf joyfully likened the event to “a national wedding celebration.”

Egypt urges Israel to stop threats against Lebanon

Egypt has urged Israel to stop making threats against Lebanon, its foreign minister said on a visit to Beirut.

Ahmed Abul Gheit has been holding talks with Lebanese leaders about the rising tensions with Israel.

Israeli Environment Minister Gideon Ezra said the entire Lebanese state would be a target if the government "conferred legitimacy on Hezbollah".

He was echoing similar remarks made by Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert on Tuesday.

"We reject any threat to the unity and sovereignty of Lebanon... especially from Israel," Mr Abul Gheit told a news conference.

"Yesterday, we spoke with the Israelis during Defence Minister Ehud Barak's visit to Egypt, and asked them to stop thinking about threatening this friendly Arab country," Mr Abul Gheit said.

Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah vowed

to destroy Israel if it carried out threats to attack Lebanon.

"If [a war] is to happen as they are threatening, our victory this time will be decisive, unquestionable and final," Mr Nasrallah said.

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has confirmed that the United States is planning a significant increase in military and defence aid to Israel

The package would reportedly amount to more than $30bn (£14.8bn) over the next 10 years.

Mr Olmert described it as an important element for the security of Israel.

Washington is reportedly preparing a package of major arms sales to Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states because of concerns over Iran's nuclear programme.

US defence aid to Israel currently stands at $2.4bn a year - the new package would amount to a 25% increase.

Mr Olmert said the aid had been agreed at a meeting with US President George W Bush in Washington last month.

Mr Olmert said the increased support was a sign of US commitment to maintain Israel's military "advantage over the Arab states".

JERUSALEM – After years of diplomatic wrangling, the Israeli government has given permission to a community of Indian citizens who believe they are one of the "lost tribes" of Israel to move legally to the Jewish state.

This decision, first reported in Israel's Maariv newspaper, clears the way for the arrival here of 7,232 members of the Bnei Menashe. They believe they are the descendants of Manasseh, one of the biblical patriarch Joseph's two sons and a grandson of Jacob.

Yesterday the Jerusalem Post and Haaretz newspapers quoted an official in Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's office denying the government approved the immigration of the Bnei Menashe, stating Interior Minister Meir Sheetrit, whose office oversees the process of immigration and absorption, refused to sign off on the deal.

JERUSALEM — Israel's Cabinet on Sunday approved the release of some 200 Palestinian prisoners as a goodwill gesture to the Palestinian government of moderate President Mahmoud Abbas.

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's Cabinet passed the proposal 16-4. Earlier this month, Olmert told Abbas he would free some of the 9,000 Palestinians held by Israel to help energize peace talks.

The prisoner issue is extremely emotional for Palestinians, many of whom know somebody behind bars or have been imprisoned themselves. Palestinians see Israel's justice system as unfair and have elevated prisoners to hero status. Abbas, known as Abu Mazen, has repeatedly called for a large release to boost his public standing.

Before 1967, when the West Bank came into Israeli hands, the territory was ruled (and annexed) by Jordan. Prior to that, it was under British rule. Before that, it was Ottoman territory. The Egyptians ruled for some time, as did the Mamluks, the Crusaders, Arab Caliphs, and a number of other ancient empires.

But the Palestinians are not on this list. So while the West Bank could technically "return" to Jordanian or British sovereignty, it could not, however, return to Palestinian sovereignty.

There is currently no state of Palestine, and no international border between Israel and Judea and Samaria (aka West Bank). The borders and territory of any future Palestinian entity are disputed. However, the NBC Olympics Web Site includes a map showing Judea and Samaria (the West Bank, along with with the Gaza Strip) as part of a country called “Palestine.” Conversely, a map of Israel is shown minus that territory. In other words, NBC mapmakers are playing political arbiters and have awarded the disputed territory to the Palestinians.

Transportation Minister Shaul Mofaz enters the race to replace Prime Minister Ehud Olmert just days after reports emerged he once instructed Israeli troops to kill seventy Palestinians a day during the Second Intifada. In May 2001, Mofaz reportedly gave a briefing to senior West Bank army commanders and said he wanted ten slain Palestinians a day in each of the seven territorial brigade areas. On Tuesday, Mofaz emphasized he is running on a platform of “security.”

JERUSALEM (AP) — A day after Prime Minister Ehud Olmert announced he would depart political life, top rival Benjamin Netanyahu said Thursday that Israel should get rid of its current governing coalition and go straight to early elections.

Polls show the Likud Party's Netanyahu — a former prime minister who takes a hard line on territorial concessions to the Arabs — would most likely win such a race if it were held today. Olmert threw Israel's political system into turmoil on Wednesday by abruptly announcing he would step down after his Kadima Party's leadership race in September, called because of a series of corruption allegations against him.

"The right thing to do when the prime minister goes is ... to let the people choose who will lead them and whoever is chosen, he is the one who will need to put together a government," Netanyahu said.

The internal turmoil could make it difficult for Olmert to close deals with either the Palestinians or Syr

Fifth, Syria has, according to Arab sources, made a big "summer housecleaning" by eliminating dozens of prisoners at the Sidnaya prison. Among them, two leaders of Jund al-Sham, the Islamist organization linked to Syrian services.

Sixth, according to the Kuwaiti daily Al-Seyassah, Syria also asked Hamas leaders based in Damascus to leave the Syrian territory. The latter could move into the southern suburbs of Beirut, the Hezbollah stronghold.

Seventh, Syria is allegedly trying to break up Hezbollah. Al-Seyassah believes that Syria has resumed its contacts with the former secretary general of Hezbollah and one of its co-founders, Sobhi Toufaili. Syria wants to strengthen Toufaili's faction to weaken Hassan Nasrallah and divide the party.

The real star at the French Bastille Day parade earlier this month in Paris was Syrian President Bashar Assad. It marked his return into the international community. In fact, the French Nicolas Sarkozy administration believes, along with to a lesser degree the Ehud Olmert government in Israel, that Assad can be a part of the solution rather than a part of the problem. But what are Assad's real intentions?

Since actions speak louder than words, let's look at the facts.

First, in February, Hezbollah terror master Imad Mugnieh was assassinated in Damascus in what is likely a Syrian-made operation.

Second, Assef Shawkat, the powerful head of Syrian security and Assad's brother-in-law was suddenly pushed aside. Shawkat is close to Tehran and has allegedly a hand in former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri's murder in Beirut in 2005.

Third, Assad acknowledged publicly peace negotiations with Israel.

Fourth, Assad agreed on opening a Syrian embassy in Beirut,

US PRESIDENTIAL hopeful Barack Obama's 36-hour Israel stopover got off to a successful start last night after productive meetings with Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and President Shimon Peres.

Judging by the lengths the Israeli officials have gone to for Senator Obama, they clearly think Senator Obama will win the November election.

A visit to Israel earlier this year by Senator Obama's opponent, Republican Party candidate Senator John McCain, had nothing like the same importance attached to it by Israeli officials.

The Democratic candidate visited the Holocaust memorial museum at Yad Vashem before heading to the occupied West Bank city of Ramallah for meetings with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.

Israeli media quoted senior officials saying that Mr Olmert would brief Senator Obama on Iran and the state of the negotiations with the Palestinians and Syria.

Obama saw how quickly tensions can inflate after an off-the-cuff remark to Jewish supporters last month that Jerusalem should remain an "undivided capital" outraged many in the Muslim world

But Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas, who will reportedly sit down with Obama on Wednesday, was sharply critical of the comment.
