OCEAN SHORES, WA

While the ocean vessel 'Dawn Raider' was commercial fishing for dogfish,
this Great White was hooked in the mouth but only resisted slightly for 15 minutes
before it came up alongside the boat to have a look; long enough for one of the crew members to slip a rope
around it's tail!!! 'And that's when the s**t hit the fan!!. The Shark took off towing the 42 foot fishing boat backwards
through the water at about 7 Knots. Just like in JAWS, the boat was taking on water over the stern
and the crew watched in horror as the shark would actually jump completely out of the water at times.
This went on for an hour before the shark finally drowned.

She weighed in at 1035 LBS. It is suspected she followed a weak El Nino current into local waters
in search of food. Although mid 60 deg. water is considered ideal for these sharks,
the larger ones can tolerate water in the low 50s.

The conga was the world's first dance, it seems. A newly discovered caravan of crustaceans from half a billion years ago shows that group behaviour evolved not long after animals themselves.

Palaeontologists led by Hou Xian-Guang, of Yunnan University, China, discovered fossilised chains of up to 20 crustaceans linked head-to-toe, the earliest record of any collective animal behaviour and perhaps an adaptation to a migratory ocean lifestyle.

"It's showing that, 525 million years ago, we've got really quite sophisticated and potentially complex interaction between different animals," says Derek Siveter, of the University of Oxford, who analysed the fossil along with colleagues at the University of Leicester, UK.

The belugas of Cook Inlet, Alaska, are in such trouble that they should be listed under the Endangered Species Act. And the time to act is now, before the comment period ends on October 20!

Troubles come to Cook Inlet in many forms. Cook Inlet oil drill tailings spew into the sea unregulated. Unmanaged gas and coal industries pollute Cook Inlet. Single-hulled oil tankers are no longer escorted by the Coast Guard. And municipal sewage is untreated; rain and storm run-offs are unchecked.

The Cook Inlet beluga population has declined dramatically from 1,300 in the late 70s to only around 300 today. ESA listing will mandate creation of a comprehensive management plan for these beluga whales and for the health of Cook Inlet. Add your comments to the petition letter today!

RICHMOND, Virginia (AP)

Scientists have confirmed the second case of a "virgin birth" in a shark.

A blacktip shark in the wild patrols the vast expanse of the Indian Ocean.

In a study reported Friday in the Journal of Fish Biology, scientists said DNA testing proved that a pup carried by a female blacktip shark in a Virginia aquarium contained no genetic material from a male.

The first documented case of asexual reproduction, or parthenogenesis, among sharks involved a pup born to a hammerhead at an Omaha, Nebraska, zoo.

"This first case was no fluke," Demian Chapman, a shark scientist and lead author of the second study, said in a statement. "It is quite possible that this is something female sharks of many species can do on occasion."

"It is very unlikely that a small number of female survivors could build their numbers up very quickly by undergoing virgin birth," Chapman said.

On average, a drop of water which finds its way into Lake Superior from runoff or rainfall takes more than two centuries to travel through the Great Lakes system and along the St. Lawrence River to the ocean, says Environment Canada. To be precise, water which entered Superior in 1794 - the year the reign of terror came to an end in France following the French revolution - didn't make it to the Atlantic until 1998.

The travelling time is based on retention times, or how long, on average, it takes for each of the lakes to replace its water with new water.

Oct. 8, 2008 -- Hundreds of new marine species and previously uncharted undersea mountains and canyons have been discovered in the depths of the Southern Ocean, Australian scientists said Wednesday.

A total of 274 species of fish, ancient corals, mollusks, crustaceans and sponges new to science were found in icy waters up to 9,800 feet deep among extinct volcanoes, they said.

Recent measurements of sea ice in the Arctic Ocean have found that it has melted to its lowest volume in recorded history.

Although the area of Arctic sea ice is greater than at the corresponding period in 2007 - the lowest coverage ever - experts are concerned that it may be much thinner.

Dr Walt Meier of US National Snow and Ice Data Center and colleagues say the overall ice volume in the Arctic Ocean is at least as low as 2007, and may even have dwindled more by as far as 10%.

Meier says this makes the ice more prone to melting than ever before.

The area of ocean that sea ice covers can vary dramatically from year to year, so scientists look at ice volume as a long-term indicator of the "health" of the ice.

Since satellite measurements began 30 years ago, it has been in steady decline.

"The long term trends in ice volume show a clear trend toward warming temperatures," says Meier. "The health of the ice is at the same state or worse than it was last year."

'Deepest ever' living fish filmed

A UK-Japan team found the 17-strong shoal at depths of 7.7km (4.8 miles) in the Japan Trench in the Pacific - and captured the deep sea animals on film.

The scientists have been using remote-operated landers designed to withstand immense pressures to comb the world's deepest depths for marine life.

No-one has ever seen fish alive at these depths before

"There are three problems: the first is food supply, which is very remote and has to come from 8km (5 miles) above.

"There is very high pressure - they have to have all sorts of physiological modifications, mainly at the molecular level.

And the third problem is that these deep trenches are in effect small islands in the wide abyss and there is a question of whether these trenches are big enough to support thriving endemic populations

Because the fish live in complete darkness, they use vibration receptors on their snouts to navigate the ocean depths and to locate food.

370 penguins mysteriously show up in Brazil

They were flown south to be closer to the freezing waters of their natural habitat on a huge air force cargo plane in what was South America's largest-ever transfer.

Onlookers cheered as the young Magellanic penguins were set free on a beach in southern Brazil and scampered into the ocean, said the International Fund for Animal Welfare.

Experts hope a small group of older penguins released along with the young ones will help guide them south to the Patagonia.

Magellanic penguins breed in large colonies in southern Argentina and Chile and migrate north as far as southwest Brazil between March and September.

Environmentalists say it is not know why the penguins were stranded so far north, but suggest they could have been carried beyond their usual range by a flow of warm water.

IFAW spokesman Chris Cutter says the penguins were among nearly 1,000 that have been washed up on Brazil's north-eastern coast in recent months.

About 20% of the penguins have died and the rest were not healthy
