Music by birds on a wire

A Brazilian musician has just completed a collaboration with an unusual partner: a large group of birds sitting on telephone wires.

According to the Daily Mail, Jarbas Agnelli saw a newspaper photo of a large flock of black birds sitting on the wires and recognized that their configuration looked very much like a musical score.

Starting from there, he arranged and recorded a composition, using xylophone, bassoon, oboe and clarinet and, of course, the notes laid out by the birds.

"The pleasing melody is not my invention. It was the birds' idea," Agnelli told the Daily Mail. "The notes are the exact position of the birds (in between the lines). The rhythm is a interpretation of their position, since there are no bar lines."

No word yet on whether the birds have engaged representation or what kind of royalties they will be asking for.

I got up at the crack of dawn this morning to pedal down to Spitalfields Market in east London to make my symphonic debut. I haven't done anything more musical than karaoke since I gave up honking on my oboe 12 years ago, but I decided it was about time I got back into it. Plus I was told musical talent was superfluous to today's performance: as long as I could ride a bike and had a bell that dinged, I was in.

Eine Brise (A Breeze) is a 90-second composition by the eccentric Argentinian composer Mauricio Kagel, who died aged 76 last autumn. Kagel described the work as a "fleeting action for 111 cyclists: a musically enriched sport event in the open".

It was fun to be part of something so odd

Sexual harassment law does not prevent professors or anyone else from using positions of power to obtain sexual favors. That happens every day. What it does is punish the unattractive and awkward -- those who fail in the pursuit of seduction -- whereas the attractive and charming succeed, and are cagey enough to avoid legal entanglements. There are probably oboe professors who are getting all the undergrad action they can handle, but they are the cute and clever ones. It is only the clumsy rejects who get accused of harassment.

If Title VII abolished one sort of inequality, it institutionalized another. And remember: Equality is for Ugly Losers!

For the second time this year, a professor at the University of Iowa has taken his own life after being accused of sexual harassment. .

On Wednesday, just a week after he was accused of sexual harassment in a lawsuit, Mark Weiger killed himself.

According to the suit, the university conducted its own investigation of the situation last year, found Weiger had violated policies against sexual harassment, and then resolved the issue "informally." He was found in his car, dead from carbon monoxide poisoning, with the garage door at his home closed. Authorities said he left a note.

In August, [66-year-old political science professor] Arthur H. Miller was arrested on bribery charges and accused of telling female students that he would give them higher grades if they let him fondle their breasts. In one case, he is alleged to have grabbed and sucked on a student's breast and then sent her an e-mail telling her that she had earned an A+. He then shot himself in a local park.

As with any sound, whistling involves vibrating air. Unlike the string of a violin or the reed of an oboe, with whistles the vibration comes by dividing a stream of air across a surface so that some of the air goes over the surface and some of it goes under the surface. That's how it works with the 2-handed whistle, also.

Reverse these directions if you are left-handed.

Start with both hands cupped as for swimming, open and side-by-side in front of you. The fingers are together, the thumbs are separated from them.

Use your right hand as a base: Keep it palm up, still curved. Bring the right thumb in to form a C-shape when viewed from the side.

Place the pinkie-finger side of the left hand at the base of the fingers of the right hand. With the left pinkie as a hinge, fold the left hand down so the left fingers press into the the right hand between the fingers and the thumb. Try to form an air-tight seal as you do so.
