A very wise TV executive once told me that the key to TV is projecting through the screen. It’s one of the keys to the success of, say, a Bill O’Reilly, who comes through the screen and grabs you by the throat. Palin too projects through the screen like crazy. I’m sure I’m not the only male in America who, when Palin dropped her first wink, sat up a little straighter on the couch and said, “Hey, I think she just winked at me.” And her smile. By the end, when she clearly knew she was doing well, it was so sparkling it was almost mesmerizing. It sent little starbursts through the screen and ricocheting around the living rooms of America. This is a quality that can’t be learned; it’s either something you have or you don’t, and man, she’s got it.

A few weeks ago Mr. O'Reilly took the McCain campaign to task for being loose with the truth in their television ads, and now, when talking about the bailout he referred to how most talk radio is dominated by rich right wing kool aid drinking idiot ideologues who are watching out for their own wealth rather than caring about the people. He said he's lucky because he has money, but what's important is doing right by the people of the Untied States.

He warns us to just walk away from the right wing liars.

While idiots in the House and talk radio (and the McCain campaign) tried to make this a partisan issue, Bloomberg tallies here that 40% of Democrats and 67% of Republicans combined together to narrowly defeat the Fed's bill that Bush supported. THAT IS CALLED A BI-PARTISAN DEFEAT OF THE BILL THAT AMERICANS IN THE MAJORITY TOLD CONGRESS THEY HATED!

Conservative talk show host Michael Savage tonight (who has been railing against Bush as a fiscal socialist and the Wall Street banksters as crooks) underscored that he was right that Americans wanted "no deal" while talk show corporate sycophants (he let them have it by name)--i.e. Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, and Bill O'Reilly--who supported the bailout were wrong.

The defeat of this irresponsible bill was not based upon Partisanship, but good Principle.

U.S. House Rejects $700 Billion Financial-Rescue Plan (Update7)

Sept. 29 (Bloomberg) -- The financial-rescue plan intended to restore confidence in the U.S. banking system collapsed in partisan wrangling as the House of Representatives voted down the proposal backed by the Bush administration and congressional leaders of both parties.

Markets plunged as the House rejected, by a vote of 228 to 205, the $700 billion measure to authorize the biggest government intervention in the markets since the Great Depression. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 778 points, or 6.98 percent to 10,365, the biggest point drop ever. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index fell 8.4 percent, the most since Oct. 26, 1987

Democrats voted 140 to 95 in favor of the legislation, while just 65 Republicans backed the bill and 133 opposed it.

President George W. Bush said he's ``very disappointed'' by the defeat in the House of his $700 billion plan.

Opponents said the measure was too risky and too costly.

The American people are faced with a serious moral dilemma. Murder and war crimes have been conducted in our name. We have allowed the war/occupation to continue in Iraq and offered ourselves little choice within the top two presidential candidates for immediate cessation of the mass killings.

The United States is directly responsible for over one million Iraqi deaths

The 2006 study confirms that US aerial bombing in civilian neighborhoods caused over a third of these deaths and that over half the deaths are directly attributable to US forces.

The magnitude of these deaths is undeniable.

We owe our children and ourselves a future without the shame of mass murder on our collective conscience. The only resolution of this dilemma is the immediate withdrawal of all US troops in Iraq and the prosecution and imprisonment of those responsible. Anything less creates a permanent original sin on the soul of the nation for that we will forever suffer.

When Maureen Dowd writes a column for the New York Times, she is very biased, but she's not writing a news story, she's writing her opinion, and that's what she gets paid for. When Bill O'Reilly airs a segment in the O'Reilly Factor, he's not giving a news story, even if he summarizes or reports one, he's giving opinion. Too often bias is accused where it is perfectly acceptable and proper.

But when this slips into the main news such as the front page, for example, then the line has been crossed between opinion and journalism

It is not unknown in news media for a poll to make it to the front page that simply was an excuse to put opinion there.

This kind of bias is when a news organization deliberately assists one political party or harms another, attempting to tilt audience opinion and shape election results or policy:

NEW YORK--Tim O'Reilly, founder of O'Reilly Media, is known as a futurist, but his keynote address on Thursday morning at the Web 2.0 Expo was heavy on the realism in the wake of sobering news from Wall Street.

"(These are) pretty depressing times in a lot of ways," O'Reilly said in an address that first had looked like it would simply be a starry-eyed discussion of enterprise opportunities for Web 2.0. "And you have to conclude, if you look at the focus of a lot of what you call 'Web 2.0,' the relentless focus on advertising-based consumer models, lightweight applications, we may be living in somewhat of a bubble, and I'm not talking about an investment bubble. (It's) a reality bubble."
