Hanna causes some flooding, flight delays in NYC

NEW YORK (AP) — Tropical Storm Hanna dropped a month's worth of rain within hours Saturday, flooding highways, delaying flights and halting the U.S. Open Tennis tournament. But officials reported no major damage.

The storm dropped three or more inches of rain on parts of the city and more in some northern suburbs, the National Weather Service said. Nearly six inches was measured in Rockland County. The metropolitan area normally gets three to four inches of rain in the entire month of September.

Wind gusts reached 40 mph, National Weather Service meteorologist John Koch said.

Stretches of several highways in the city, Long Island and Westchester County were closed because of flooding, and a fallen tree briefly closed part of the Belt Parkway in Brooklyn, police and city officials said.

Three apartment buildings in the Woodside section of Queens also grappled with some flooding, but residents didn't have to evacuate, city Office of Emergency Management spokesman Chris Gilbride said.

Charter School Funding Per Child Much Higher Than Public Schools

While it has been well known that charter schools have attracted large amounts of private funding, information released by DOE now show that even the public funds charters receive result in much higher per-capita spending than at public schools.

In a budget package released last week, DOE cited a figure of $8,278 in per capita tax levy funding for public schools exclusive of District 75 which serves children with developmental challenges and has dramatically higher funding per child.

In contrast, DOE documents provided last spring (see page 8c) show per child funding of $12,432 for next year for the city's charter school students.

This funding disparity helps explain why charters have been able to cap class size at much lower levels and provide far more in terms of curriculum and enhancements than traditional public schools.

This is Eileen Clancy, one of the founders of I-Witness Video, a NYC-based video collective that's in St. Paul to document the policing of the protests around this week's Republican National Convention.

We are suffering a preemptive video arrest. For those that don't know, I-Witness Video was remarkably successful in exposing police misconduct and outright perjury by police during the 2004 RNC. Out of 1800 arrests, at least 400 were overturned based solely on video evidence which contradicted sworn statements which were fabricated by police officers. It seems that the house arrest we are now under and the possible threat of the seizure of our computers and video cameras is a result of the 2004 success.

We are asking the public to contact the office of St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman at 651-266-8510 to stop this house arrest, this gross intimidation by police officers, and the detention of media activists and reporters.

Krispy Kreme cheddar bacon cheeseburgers at the Google cafeteria

My mother has a term for any food product that she deems unhealthy. She calls it an "instant coronary." It can refer to anything from a mound of onion rings to a big, juicy steak. When I first saw this picture, I immediately heard her voice in my head, labeling these Krispy Kreme cheddar bacon cheeseburgers as such.

I've seen other instances in which a Krispy Kreme is used as a bun for a burger. However, never before have I seen one that is also piled high with bacon and cheese. It seems so wrong that in its deviance, it becomes right once again.

These particular Krispy Kreme burgers were made at the Google NYC cafeteria, so they weren't wildly available. However, did any Slashfood readers get to try one? How were they?

Artificial Sand Dune to House New Museum

If you happen to be driving through the desert near Doha, Qatar and notice an unusual number of Bentleys and Ferraris parked in front of a sand dune, you may find you're actually looking at the Museum of Modern Arab Art, a two-level, air-conditioned 350,000-square-foot facility celebrating over 10,000 works of art.

The museum, designed by architect Rafael Viñoly in NYC, will be completed by 2011, and will show off a collection of 5,000 paintings, 700 antiques, sculptures, metalwork and ceramics, a calligraphy section—not fancy party invitations, mind you, but elaborately ornate murals and manuscripts ranging from the early Qur'anic period to modern times—and other areas will include photography and applied arts. It may not surprise you to know that this collection is actually entirely owned by one dude, Sheikh Hassan Bin Mohammed Al-Thani, which he started amassing 10 short years ago.

But the most absolutely free locations are city parks and other outdoor public spaces, which makes summer in the city with a laptop particularly appealing. Besides City Hall and Bowling Green, there is dependable wireless at Wagner Park (with views of the Statue of Liberty), South Street Seaport, Madison Square Park (near the Flatiron Building), Bryant Park (adjacent to the landmark library building that’s guarded by the lions) and Chelsea Market, among many others. The Apple Stores make good places to plan, or reconfigure your plans, in key spots in SoHo, the Meatpacking District and Midtown.

The only big disappointment is the CBS Mobile Zone, which is supposed to cover attraction-packed Midtown between Central Park South and Times Square from the Avenue of the Americas to Eighth Avenue. In random tests in a half-dozen locations, it failed to provide a connection. CBS Mobile said it is working on strengthening its signal over the summer.
