On December 11, the Senate Armed Services Committee issued a compelling report into the torture and abuse of prisoners in US custody (PDF), based on a detailed analysis of how Chinese torture techniques, which are used in US military schools to train personnel to resist interrogation if captured, were reverse engineered and applied to prisoners captured in the "War on Terror."

The techniques, taught as part of the SERE programs (Survival, Evasion, Resistance, Escape) include sleep deprivation, the prolonged use of stress positions, forced nudity, hooding, exposure to extreme temperatures, subjecting prisoners to loud music and flashing lights, "treating them like animals," and, in some cases, the ancient torture technique known as waterboarding, a form of controlled drowning that the torturers of the Spanish Inquisition called "tortura del agua."

Spencer Tunick, an American photographer and artist best known for his installations that feature large numbers of nude people posed in artistic formations is once again using the `naked medium’ to highlight danger of climatic change ahead of negotiations on a global climate treaty begin in December in Copenhagen.

Says Tunick: "A body is a living entity. It represents life, freedom, sensuality, and it is a mechanism to carry out our thoughts. A body is always beautiful to me. It depends on the individual work and what I do with it and what kind of idea lies behind it -- if age matters or not. But in my group works, the only difference is how far people can go if it rains, snows etc."

30 September 2009: Art in the material world, a wry look at the notion of artists as brands, is the focus of Pop Life, a new blockbuster exhibition opening tomorrow at Tate Modern. Taking Andy Warhol's notorious provocation that 'good business is the best art' as its starting point, the show proposes a re-reading of the legacy of pop art with works from Tracey Emin, Keith Haring, Damien Hirst, Martin Kippenberger, Jeff Koons and Takashi Murukami, among others.

Expect plenty of sex and nudity – as well as lots of 'things to snigger and ogle at', says Guardian art critic Adrian Searle. Pop Life: Art in a Material World runs until 17 January 2009

Germans are widely known for the ease with which they shed clothing, so it comes as little surprise the country’s first route for hiking naked could soon open in the hilly Harz region.

Foreigners are frequently shocked by the widespread nudity found in German parks and other public spaces, but even tolerant Teutons have their limits for the country’s Freikörperkultur (FKK), or literally “free body culture.” For example, most would disapprove of a group of girl scouts happening upon stark naked hikers while on a weekend camping trip.

Which is why Heinz Ludwig, an entrepreneur from the bucolic Harz region of Saxony-Anhalt, started an initiative to open the country’s first trail for hiking nude.

Sean Lennon and girlfriend, model Kemp Muhl, were photographed for a recent issue of French magazine Purple imitating the famous Rolling Stone cover of Sean's parents, John Lennon and Yoko Ono.

The original was transgressive, powerful, emotional in its reversal of gender roles -- her clothed, him naked. It says so much about the vulnerability that comes with truly loving someone, and about forging an egalitarian relationship in a fucked-up world.

Here's how photographer Annie Leibovitz describes the shoot:

"John took his clothes off in a few seconds, but Yoko was very reluctant. She said, 'I'll take my shirt off but not my pants.' I was kinda disappointed, and I said, 'Just leave everything on.' We took one Polaroid, and the three of us knew it was profound right away."

The re-interpreted version isn't profound. It's just porny. Something we've seen a thousand times before.

As the court noted, “It is enough to ask why a nude performance with an audience would be permitted, and a photo shoot in the same place would be prohibited, to suggest that significant constitutional problems, based on irrationality, attend the City’s reading of the statute.”

The arrest of Zach Hyman’s nude model during a photo shoot at the Metropolitan Museum of Art was predictable in spite of the irony of the location. Whereas marble and oil nudes are usually left at peace (not always though: art containing nudity is a frequent target of censorship), a living woman posing naked for an artist is guilty of exposure. Some of the absurdity of that situation, however, is

tempered by the fact that New York’s ban on public nudity provides an exemption for “any person entertaining or performing in a play, exhibition, show, or entertainment.” In other words, nudity for artistic purposes is not illegal:

New CIA Docs Detail Brutal "Extraordinary Rendition" Process

It then details the standard "corrective techniques:" these are a series of physical assaults labeled with innocuous titles like insult slap, abdominal slap, facial hold and attention grasp. Because of substantial redactions, it seems unlikely that this list is complete.

The process starts with "capture shock." The detainee is subject to a medical examination prior to his flight. During the flight, the detainee is securely shackled, and is deprived of sight and sound through the use of blindfolds, earmuffs and hoods.

The detainee is "in the complete control of Americans." The detainee is stripped naked and shaved. A "series of photographs are taken of the HVD while nude." A medical officer and a psychologist play key roles in the process
