It is a breathtaking - and death defying feat - which redefines the term extreme sport.

Battling both gravity and the elements, the climber claws her way up a granite boulder by just her fingertips.

For most, the lack of ropes and safety equipment would be a perilous step too far.

But this woman has gone even further and abandoned her clothes to take part in the new sport of naked rock climbing

The climber is one of a series of super-fit 'Stone Nudes' captured in action on the cliffs and mountains of America.

Without clothes, specialist shoes or other equipment, participants say the experience captures the 'true essence of the climbing spirit.'

It is the latest extreme sport craze to sweep the US, and is now tipped to become a popular pastime in the UK.

clipper's remarks: I've been wondering why Botticelli's Venus and the Odalisque's (among other famous nudes) were painted without body hair. I thought that with body hair these paintings would be more like raunchy porn than art, (although porn can be art). Europeans would have learned about body hair removal - the importance of hygiene from Africans and Arabs.

누드로 반전 운동을 하는 이들이 잘 사용하는 방법이 글자를 몸으로 만들거나 또는 반전 마크를 표시하기도 하는데 이 반전 마크는 1958년 영국에서 미국의 핵잠수함의 훈련을 반대하면서 만든 것이라 하며 영국 해군의 수기 신호 N과 D를 따와서 만들었다고 하며 지금도 반전 시위의 마크표시로 널리 사용하고 있다 .

그런데 똑같이 '벌거벗은 육체'라 하더라도 영어에서 '네이키드(naked)'와 '누드(nude)'가 갖고 있는 의미는 다르다. '네이키드'는 단순히 벌거벗은 상태를 뜻하는 반해, '누드'는 알몸의 상태가 보여 주는 예술적 아름다움을 뜻한다. 즉 어떤 목적이나 의의가 있어서 나체가 되었을 경우를 말하는 것이다.

실제로 '누드'라는 단어는 18세기 초 일부 미술비평가들이, 알몸의 인체는 항상 예술의 중심 주제가 되고 있다는 것을 널리 인식시키기 위해 만들어 냈다. nude는 라틴어 nude(나체의)에서 유래된 말이다.

나체에서 예술적 의미가 곁들여진 누드는 오랜 세월 동안 많은 예술가들이 탐구의 대상으로 삼아 왔다.
회화·조각에서는 생명력의 상징이나 감성·성격을 나타내기 위해서 누드 표현을 즐겼으며, 사진 예술에서는 빛과 그림자를 이용하여 누드 사진을 찍었다. 특히 인간의 육체를 묘사하거나 조각하는 조형 예술가들은 육체를 예술의 가장 중요한 대상으로 취급해 왔다.
