October Surprises In History

Those who believe that this month's collapse of global financial markets is an unprecedented disaster need to study history.
In 1987, Oct. 19 became known as "Black Monday," as Wall Street investors watched the market nose-dive 22 percent and lose $500 billion in value in a single trading session -- still the biggest one-day loss of value in history.

The 23rd of this month is the 25th anniversary of the attack on the U.S. Marine headquarters in Beirut, Lebanon -- a radical Islamic suicide attack that killed 241 Americans.

Fifteen years ago this month, there was a 19-hour gunfight in Mogadishu, Somalia, which claimed the lives of 18 U.S. Army Rangers and Delta Force personnel.

It was on Oct. 19, 1781, that the success of the American Revolution was assured.

British Gen. Charles Cornwallis surrendered his army to George Washington at Yorktown, Va.

On Oct. 8, 1871, a cow in the barn of Patrick and Catherine O'Leary started what came to be known as the "Great Chicago Fire."

In October 1939, the Nazis and the Soviets halved and occupied Poland, and by October 1940, Hitler's (SET ITAL) Luftwaffe (END ITAL) was making daylight bombing raids on British cities.

The Great Crash of 1929 -- so severe that it makes this year's meltdown pale in comparison -- began Oct. 24.

I am a 65 year old white woman and have voted in every election since I was of age to do so. I have seen some rotten campaigns in my time but McCain's campaign has taken on a whole new meaning of hatefulness.

People in this country are known to be a people that come together during bad times. We have this economic crisis, the war in Iraq and the war in Afghanistan to worry about. We have nuclear weapons being harvested and the price of gas out of sight. We have hundreds of people being thrown out of their homes, vehicles repossessed, business shutting down or moving oversea's.

And now we have the McCain/Palin ticket running the nastiest, fear-mongoring, lying and working their crowds into pitbull frenzies. This is totally disgraceful and I will never look at John McCain the same again. I feel only distain for him.

The Left long ago stopped trying to win arguments. The Left long ago adopted the Alinsky school of political warfare: Destroy your opponent. Portray conservatives as racist, homophobes, wife-battering moronic paranoids and that campaign of political annihilation is largely won. The political movement which sanctimoniously prides itself on rejecting stereotypes smeared sixty percent of America with a savage, humorless defamation.

How does the Left win many of its policy battles? Through unelected federal judges who are appointed for life. How does the Right win many of its policy battles? By referenda and similar votes of the people.

When did McCain get a bump? When he picked an unapologetic conservative running mate.

Conservatives lose when they deny that they are conservatives: When they seek that two percent of America that calls itself moderate at the cost of that sixty percent of America that calls itself conservative.

BALTIMORE, Maryland (AFP) — Two Roman Catholic nuns whose non-violent action against nuclear weapons landed them with prison sentences returned home to Baltimore to learn they had been listed as terrorists, they said Friday.

Sister Ardeth Platte, 72, and Sister Carol Gilbert, 60, came back from two weeks out of town to find letters from the Maryland State Police saying they had been wrongfully listed as suspected terrorists in a federal database in 2005-2006.

The Dominican nuns broke into a US nuclear missile silo in Colorado in 2002 and painted crucifixes with their own blood -- earning Platte and Gilbert prison sentences of 41 and 33 months respectively.

Their antiwar activities even landed them in federal prison earlier this decade for trespassing onto a military base and pouring blood onto a nuclear missile silo.

Now they face fresh infamy as two nuns secretly branded by Maryland State Police as terrorists and placed on a national watch list.

"This term terrorist is a really serious accusation," Sister Ardeth, a nun for 54 years, told The Washington Times on Thursday in the first interview that the women have given since being informed they were among 53 people added to a terrorist watch list in conjunction with an extensive Maryland surveillance effort of antiwar activists.

"There is no way that we ever want to be identified as terrorists. We are nonviolent. We are faith-based," she said.

Some key decision makers in Israel fear that unless they attack Iranian nuclear enrichment facilities in the next few months, while George W Bush is still president, there will not be another period when they can rely on the United States as being anywhere near as supportive in the aftermath of a unilateral attack.

In the past 40 years there have been few occasions when I have been more concerned about a specific conflict escalating to involve, economically, the whole world. We are watching a disinformation exercise involving a number of intelligence services. Reality is becoming ever harder to disentangle.

US President George Bush decided to go ahead with the move after Kim Jong Il's government gave assurances over its nuclear activities.

The move follows days of deliberations within Mr Bush's administration after a visit by US envoy Chris Hill to the North Korean capital, Pyongyang, last week.

The drive to revive the talks comes after North Korea stepped up efforts to rebuild its nuclear facility at Yongbyon and banned UN monitors from the Soviet-era plant.

The US now expects North Korea to announce that it has resumed the process of scaling back its nuclear programme.

Meanwhile, Pyonyang released pictures of Mr Kim for the first time in nearly two months, showing him looking generally well despite reports he recently underwent brain surgery.

Wearing his trademark khaki jumpsuit and sunglasses, the leader was seen standing with uniformed soldiers with his arms folded or his hands behind his back.

The soviets pleaded for new talks and agreed to Reagan's position. The cold war was won.

Just when it appeared that agreement might be reached, the talks fell apart amid accusations and recriminations, and U.S.-Soviet relations took a giant step backwards.

The sticking point arose when Gorbachev requested that the talks concerning the missiles be expanded to include limitations on America's Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI). Referred to as the "Star Wars" initiative by opponents, SDI was one of Reagan's pet projects. A multi-billion-dollar program, SDI was supposed to use space technology to provide a "shield" from nuclear attacks.

Reagan refused to consider Gorbachev's suggestion, and the talks ended the next day, October 12, with no agreement in hand.

It is time for America to get pissed off at John McCain

Does everyone remember that financial-nuclear missile that I eluded to in a previous piece? As I just logged onto the NY Times web site, in my not so learned opinion, we are about to get hit and hit hard again tomorrow even after our own stock market plunged to new lows today. On Thursday the DOW sunk by 678 points going below the 9,000 mark for the first time since 2003. As this financial-nuclear missile travels towards us, I am not shaking in fear but raising my fist in abject anger.

The NY Times reports, “Japan stocks plunged, dragging the Nikkei 225 average down 11 percent and leading to a suspension of futures trading.” And the “The Hang Seng index in Hong Kong was down about 8 percent to 14,675.53.”

To people who grew up in the 60s and 70s although people who did what Ayers did were wrong and on the fringes, we understand the anger. Think of people's anger today at terrorism and remember that many were that angry at the US government. Think of parents who wouldn't let there children watch the news because of the death and destruction that came every day. Think of riots at political conventions and in the streets of cities across America. Think of the fear of nuclear attack from a volatile and powerful Russia. What Ayers did was wrong and should, by all rights have been punished. It was not, however, today.
