Woman’s Paper Skin a Walking Notepad

For this Chinese woman who suffers from a condition called artificial urticaria, her skin has served as a notebook for all the years of her life.

This strange medical anomaly has no ill effects, but most agree that it is very weird.

Huang Xiangji is a 50-year-old woman from Chengdu who uses her skin like writing paper.

Huang claims that when she writes a word on her skin by using her fingernail, the letters protrude from her skin a moment later.

“I used my body as a notebook for years,” says Huang.

Even as a child, she was able to do this and she would often create shopping lists on her arm before going out to the stores. (That’s one list you can’t misplace!)

Pip, pip, hurray! I briefly mentioned PIP Studio on Monday when I shared a fun folksy notebook I picked up from the local stationery shop. I’m so glad that I took the time to click around on the PIP website because I found a bunch of beautiful products — PIP Studio is more than paper goods that is for sure! Bold saturated patterned wallpaper in feminine florals (sold by Eijffinger), school supplies, bedding, porcelain, handbags, etc. YUM!

Imagine being able to walk into an airport or your office with your notebook and instead of consuming battery, it is recharged. Imagine eliminating that spaghetti of wires behind your desktop PCs. Based on principles proposed by MIT physicists, Intel researchers have been working on a Wireless Resonant Energy Link (WREL).

Rattner demonstrated powering a 60-watt light bulb without the use of a plug or wire of any kind, which is more than is needed for a typical laptop.

The magic of WREL is that it promises to deliver wireless power safely and efficiently. The technology relies on strongly coupled resonators, a principle similar to the way a trained singer can shatter a glass using her voice. At the receiving resonator's natural frequency, energy is absorbed efficiently, just as a glass absorbs acoustic energy at its natural frequency.

With this technology enabled in a laptop, for example, batteries could be recharged when the laptop gets within a metre or two of the transmit resonator.

NEW YORK -- Gold. It's one of the oldest and most prized possessions we have. Egyptian pharaohs were buried with it, the Romans traded it and gold is even mentioned as a gift in the Bible.

As stocks plummet and many realize they don't understand how their money is invested, some on Wall Street are turning to gold as a haven.

Who can blame them? Gold is something you can see, hold and fully understand. In the last two days, the price of gold shot up $110 to $892.70 an ounce.

Just a few blocks away from all the turmoil and panic of the stock market sits the world's largest stockpile of gold. Deep under the streets of Manhattan sits more gold than "James Bond" villain Goldfinger could ever imagine.
