Cold weather forecasts could warm frigid consumers — Good news for retailers has been sparse over the last several weeks, but if Storm Exchange Inc.’s recent predictions for a cold winter prove true, sales could receive a much-needed boost. Storm Exchange reports year-over-year temperatures in the Midwest and Northeast have a 90 percent probability of increasing this month, giving apparel retailers a prime opportunity to sell winter wear. “Cold temperatures are a critical driver of consumer shopping behavior in September and October,” said Paul Walsh, Storm Exchange chief strategy officer. The Fluffy Bunny Crew, a street gang, was formed years ago on upscale high-school campuses in the northeast Valley, a far cry from the low-income neighborhoods believed by many to spawn second- and third-generation gang members.

Members of the predominantly White gang of suburban young people first attracted police attention by mugging classmates at northeast Phoenix parties.

During the past two years, they have evolved from a party crew into a street gang known for armed robberies, drug deals and violent crime, police say.

Phoenix police say the Fluffy Bunny Crew is under investigation in a Phoenix homicide and other crimes in northeast Valley communities.

One Way Up: U.S. Space Plan Relies on Russia

STAR CITY, Russia — This place was once no place, a secret military base northeast of Moscow that did not show up on maps. The Soviet Union trained its astronauts here to fight on the highest battlefield of the cold war: space.

Yet these days, Star City is the place for America’s hard-won orbital partnership with Russia, where astronauts train to fly aboard Soyuz spacecraft. And in two years Star City will be the only place to send astronauts from any nation to the International Space Station.

The gap is coming: from 2010, when the National Aeronautics and Space Administration shuts down the space shuttle program, to 2015, when the next generation of American spacecraft is scheduled to arrive, NASA expects to have no human flight capacity and will depend on Russia to get to the $100 billion station, buying seats on Soyuz craft as space tourists do.

Military hit with 2nd suit over religious freedom

An atheist soldier has sued Defense Secretary Robert Gates, alleging he was forced to participate in public prayers and that the military systematically violates the religious freedoms of its personnel.

Spc. Dustin Chalker, who has served in Korea and Iraq, is the second soldier at the northeast Kansas post to file such a lawsuit. The New Mexico-based Military Religious Freedom Foundation joined Chalker as a plaintiff in his lawsuit, filed Sept. 25 in U.S. District Court in Kansas City, Kan.

Both lawsuits allege the military permits religious discrimination by fundamentalist Christians who try to force their views on others, especially subordinates.

Chalker’s lawsuit also cites a “spiritual handbook” for soldiers carrying the endorsement of Gen. David Petraeus, the commander of U.S. forces in the Middle East. The lawsuit alleges the book promotes Christianity and denigrates nonbelievers. Petraeus is not named as a defendant.

If that sounds a little unconventional, it's because Lopez was taking a males-only course offered at Northeast Lakeview College, the newest of five Alamo Community Colleges.

Mary Daly, a former professor at Boston College, barred men from some of her classes at the private, Jesuit-run institution. Administrators reprimanded Daley, claiming the exclusion violated Title IX. She was forced to retire in 1999 after two male students filed a discrimination complaint against the university, but the case was settled out of court.

“It's not segregation; it is a different instructional approach,” Reno said. “If it can benefit women and there is an interest, we will do the same thing for them.”

College class for men only is raising legal questions

Anna Bell “Wendy” Wendelburg Zeigler began work at 6:30 that December morning in 1944, in a sprawling Gothic hospital in Paris, to pandemonium, blood and screams.

Ambulances crowded the large, snow-covered plaza of Hospital Lariboisiere on Rue Ambriose Pare. Stretchers with bloody men jammed the corridors. Every bed was filled with wounded soldiers from the Battle of the Bulge.

“There were so many litters, you could barely walk down the hall,” says Zeigler of Northeast Richland, now 87. “We probably worked until midnight. I really can’t remember. There were lots of days like that.”

The young nurse, part of the buildup of U.S. forces in England in spring of 1944, landed among the wreckage on Utah Beach that August, two months after the D-Day invasion. She spent “forever” in a pup tent in an apple orchard near St. Lo before arriving in liberated Paris.

There has been a lot of discussion of the Pew Report released earlier this week that shows that including cell-phone only respondents does appear to make a 2-3% difference in the presidential preference polling (see Mark's post)

In this survey, 10.6% of respondents indicated that they only had a cell-phone (this is smaller than the percentage cited in the CDC survey, though the CDC survey was conducted a year later). Most interesting is the variation across states. The map below shows this variance.

Some of the swing states that stand out as having higher than average cell-phone only users are Montana (21%), Oregon (17%), Virginia (15.7%), Wisconsin (15.3%) and Minnesota (15.1%)

As the world's scientists try to unzip mysteries about the universe, Japan is set to open its largest atomic science park to study the world at its smallest level.

The Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC Center) -- a 150 billion yen (1.36 billion dollar) project almost entirely funded by the government -- will open in December as one of the world's three hubs of atomic science.

The gigantic complex in the nuclear research hub in Tokai, 100 kilometres (60 miles) northeast of Tokyo, is designed to help researchers study any object on Earth beneath the level of the atom.

The North Yungas Road, also
known as El Camino de la Muerte
(Spanish for "Road
of Death"), is a 43 mile road
that leads from La Paz to Coroico,
35 miles (56 km) northeast of La Paz in the Yungas region of
Bolivia.

In many places, the road is too small. There is only one lane.
As a result, when the vehicle going down comes across a vehicle
coming up, it has to BACK UP to the passing area to allow the
climbing vehicle to proceed. It is very dangerous to back
up. Cars and trucks have actually fallen while trying to
back up because there is so little room for error!

Down below across the valley is the winding Road of Death as seen from
the village of Coroico. Unbelievable.

A diplomat from Pyongyang says North Korea's atomic reactor will be restarted because Washington hasn't kept its part of an international deal to end the country's nuclear program.

North Korea stopped disabling the nuclear complex at Yongbyon, northeast of the capital Pyongyang last month because the U.S. has not kept its end of a disarmament-for-aid deal, Hyun Hak Bong told reporters at the border.

"We are making thorough preparations to restart" the facility, he said. He did not say when it might be operational again.

In Washington, the State Department said North Korea must make a choice about whether it wants to have a better relationship with the world or "keep themselves isolated."

Hyun was speaking before the start of talks at the border village of Panmunjom with South Korean officials on sending energy aid to the impoverished North amid a deadlock in the international six-country disarmament talks.
