Warshauer’s exploration of the shofar mirrors her own journey through Judaism. Raised in North Carolina in a Reform Jewish home, she experimented with Eastern religions and meditation. She found comfort in the universal teachings of Sufism, which focuses on the healing vibrations of sound. At a Sufi music camp, she encountered a melody by Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach, “Return Again,” which motivated her to return to her own tradition. “I had never heard of Carlebach,” Warshauer said. Now, she said, she “sees the world through Jewish eyes. That’s the spiritual door for me. Music is the way I can communicate the wisdom of our tradition both for Jews and non-Jews. I can do that in an honest and enriching way because it is my tradition, I haven’t borrowed it.”

A short investment of time in mental training can help you manage pain, concludes a new study.

The study, which examined the perception of pain and the effects of various mental training techniques, found that relatively short and simple mindfulness meditation training can have a significant positive effect on pain management.

Though pain research during the past decade has shown that extensive meditation training can have a positive effect in reducing a person''s awareness and sensitivity to pain, the effort, time commitment, and financial obligations required has made the treatment not practical for many patients.

Now, the new study by researchers at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte shows that a single hour of training spread out over a three day period can produce the same kind of analgesic effect.

Taryale was only 15 years old. Early on Friday morning, aboard his Philadelphia school bus, he pulled a handgun from his bag and shot another child.

Hermann, a Minnesota cop, on Tuesday shot dead a man who ran over a plastic traffic cone in a car park.

On Friday morning, Rodriquez, 40, walked into the Florida engineering consultancy from which he had been sacked and opened fire, killing a young father and wounding five others.

Gonzalez, 29, who was jilted in love, shot dead four people on Wednesday in the North Carolina town that inspired fictitious Mayberry – the almost crime-free, one-traffic-light town, inspired by the 1960s Andy Griffith Show.

I could go on, of course. Another week of guns and blood across America and before a public and polity so astonishingly impervious to the carnage that it is treated almost as if it were measles.

Meet Andrew Wiggins - The 13 Year Old Hoops Prodigy from Canada

At 6′6 and 195 pounds, Andrew Wiggins is literally and figuratively, a man amongst boys to his Middle School opponents and teammates. Wiggins has the size and game to probably be playing at the Division 1 collegiate level this season, but the NCAA will have to wait until at least 2014 to see the hard-court phenom in action since he is only 13 years old.

Although he is a native of Canada, Andrew has begun to make his presence felt across the US hoops landscape by showcasing his talents recently at the Scouts Focus Elite 80 Showcase which was held on the campus of Barton College in North Carolina. The showcase features some of the top seniors in the nation as well as a select few 8th and 9th graders. Amazingly, he already has a 36 inch vertical leap and wears a size 14 shoe.

clipper's remarks: What a lame article. It was a fantastic game. Neck & neck the whole time. Ponder has been injured it seems like forever and he got pounded several times. He looked like a dead-man walking sometimes.

With 5 seconds to go, no time outs, and NC State working for a Tie, their quarterback threw the long ball. In the end zone the ball bounced around, popping up and FSU gets the interception!!!

While I rarely watch football anymore, the game was a nail-biter for this one who is wanting Bobby Bowden to finish well. As the commentators said several times during the game...he deserves to coach as long as he desire and retire on his terms. He put FSU on the map, helped contribute financially to the college, built a strong program, and has been a wonderful mentor to many young men.

Seminoles outscore N.C. State 45-42

Florida State quarterback Christian Ponder played through a rib injury and gave a gritty performance here on Saturday and sophomore running back Jermaine Thomas ran for a season-high 186 yards to lead the Seminoles to a 45-42 victory against N.C. State at Doak Campbell Stadium.

After ending a three-game losing streak last week with a victory at North Carolina, the Seminoles (4-4, 2-3) have now evened their overall record and have crawled back into the Atlantic Coast Conference's Atlantic Division race.

Ponder suffered a rib injury in the first half but played through it and completed 26-of-40 attempts for 277 yards.

House health bill clocks in at 1,990 pages

It runs more pages than War and Peace, has nearly five times as many words as the Torah, and its tables of contents alone run far longer than this story.

The House health care bill unveiled Thursday clocks in at 1,990 pages and about 400,000 words. With an estimated 10-year cost of $894 billion, that comes out to about $2.24 million per word. .

“It’s one thing to read it,” said Rep. Lee Terry (R-Neb.), a lawyer who voted against the first version of the bill on its way through the Energy and Commerce Committee. “It’s another thing to understand it when it’s written in legalese.”

Republicans aide said a print-out of the bill weighs more than 19 pounds and stands nearly nine inches tall.

North Carolina Republican Rep. Patrick McHenry, 34 years old and a few inches taller than 5 feet, said the bill could act as a ”booster seat.”

But Republican Rep. Joe Barton, who is Texan, said the bill is “about four reams of paper” that add up to the American public “getting reamed.”

But there’s good news. It’s easier to follow the political follies (and abort them) when we stay in touch with think tanks and political action groups, working full-time, that provide heads up and mechanisms to get out our messages. North Carolina-focused organizations such as the John Locke Foundation (www.johnlocke.org) and the Civitas Institute (www.nccivitas.org) are two of the best in the Tar Heel state. National groups such as the Heritage Foundation (www.heritage.org), the Heartland Institute (www.heartland.org), Americans for Prosperity (www.americansforprosperity.org) and Freedom Works (www.freedomworks.org) are powerful and reliable sources of information. The last two have statewide affiliates. These principled organizations promote individual freedom and economic opportunities for all citizens. They counter government tyranny with research and activism.
