UNC grad gets up to 33 years for plowing SUV into campus crowd in bid to 'avenge Muslim deaths'

HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. - A former student was sentenced to up to 33 years in prison Tuesday for plowing his sport utility vehicle into a crowd at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in a self-professed bid to avenge Muslim deaths overseas.

Mohammed Taheri-Azar, 25, pleaded guilty earlier this month to nine counts of attempted murder for the March 2006 attack at a popular outdoor gathering spot known as The Pit.

Former history professor Michael Allsep, whose wrist and tailbone were broken, said he feared for his life.

"This man not only tried to kill me and my students, he tried to kill the best of our future. He failed only through poor execution," Allsep wrote in a statement read by his mother.

Afterward, he waited in his vehicle for police for about 15 minutes and told them he was the man they were looking for. Police found a letter in his apartment that he had written them because he thought he would be killed during the attack.

Here in Hampton we had great looking clouds just before the storm hit. However, that was about it, we received just a taste of the storm.

My husband works just outside of downtown Norfolk, on TRANT & Va Beach Blvd. Contractors Paving. They had hail and just a real bad storm. It's easing there now as well but just wanted to inform you. He is suppose to call, but I don't know if he was successful.

Triad could become an aerotropolis

The term "Aerotropolis" was coined by economic-development expert John Kasarda to describe a regional economy based in the aviation industry but with equally good links to other forms of transportation.

Kasarda envisions a reinvigorated economy built around Piedmont Triad International Airport and the area's larger transportation network. The Triad's large web of rail and highway routes has been a key attribute for more than a century.

The future will include at least two new interstates, improved air and rail access, and even a possible link between the land-locked Triad and the major ports of North Carolina and South Carolina.

For Triad residents, living in an aerotropolis could mean more job opportunities in more professions, higher incomes and a greater level of direct access - by road, rail and air - to places ranging from the coast to the Midwest, Northeast and Canada.

John Edwards' calls to former advisers asking forgiveness for lying about his affair have been met with rage, according to a report published Monday in The New York Daily News.

"It was kind of pathetic, to tell you the truth," an ex-aide, speaking on condition of anonymity, told the paper. The aide reportedly said he has no intention of returning Edwards' call.

The former presidential candidate admitted Aug. 8 that he had an affair with one of his campaign staff members, Rielle Hunter, in 2006 when his wife Elizabeth's cancer was in remission.

Edwards — who is noticeably absent from the Democratic National Convention that began Monday in Denver — is said to be making phone calls to his former supporters, saying, "I let you down, and I'm sorry," the Post reports.

One former assistant told the paper that he ending his conversation with Edwards abruptly, telling the former North Carolina senator, "I don't want you to call me again."

A man in the US has managed to catch and land a record-breaking catfish on a Barbie fishing rod just 2-and-a-half feet long.

David Hayes and his 3-year-old granddaughter Alyssa were angling in the pond behind his Wilkes County home when she asked him to hold her rod while she nipped to the loo.

"They hadn't no more than closed the door than the cat hit the cricket and took off," Mr Hayes told the Hickory Daily Record.

"He turned the water over and I saw his tail was about as wide as my two hands."

Alyssa returned to find her grandad battling with the monster fish.

"She said, 'Papa, you're going to break my rod,' because it was bent double," said Mr Hayes.

After 25 minutes, the pink plastic toy prevailed and Mr Hayes landed the 21 lbs,1oz catfish on the 6 lbs test line.

At 32 inches long, it was 2 inches longer than the rod.

A state fisheries biologist from North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission has certified the record, which was nearly three pounds over the previous mark.

Taxpayer advocate takes aim at IRS deficiencies

Nina E. Olson, the official appointed to speak out on behalf of U.S. taxpayers, has a few major gripes about the Internal Revenue Service.

As national taxpayer advocate, she issued a summer report to Congress identifying areas of concern the IRS needs to focus on in the 2009 fiscal year.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the creation of the Office of the Taxpayer Advocate in order to identify problems within the IRS and help taxpayers resolve conflicts.

Olson works independently within the IRS and is required by law to submit two annual reports to Congress.

Olson has served as the taxpayer advocate for seven years. She is an attorney licensed in Virginia and North Carolina and the founder of the Community Tax Law Project, a low- income taxpayer clinic. Her experience working with taxpayer disputes has helped her appreciate the frustration so many people have had with the IRS.

The Winston-Salem Journal reported the catch Aug. 5 in eastern Wilkes County has been certified as a record by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission.

Hayes and his granddaughter have been fishing in the pond behind his house since she was big enough to hold a pole.

Hayes said his granddaughter worried he would break her rod. He landed the 21-pound fish on a 6-pound test line. It was 32 inches long, 2 inches longer than the rod.

Woman Attempts To Kidnap Ex-Virtual Boyfriend

Kimberly Jernigan, 33, allegedly attempted to kidnap her former virtual boyfriend on August 21.

New Castle County Police said 33-year-old Kimberly Jernigan of North Carolina was apparently distraught after her online relationship with a 52-year-old man from Claymont, Delaware came to an end.

The pair apparently met online in "Second Life." A virtual relationship began between the victim, whose character was a Lion, and Jerrigan, whose online persona was said to be a virtual woman.

When the two met in reality several months ago, police said the victim ended the relationship, sending Jernigan into a downward spiral.

In the beginning of August, Jernigan allegedly drove to the victim's Pennsylvania workplace and attempted to kidnap him at gunpoint. While she was unsuccessful, she returned two weeks later to track down the victim's Delaware address.

Jernigan is currently facing charges of attempted kidnapping, burglary and aggravated menacing.

Barack Obama’s presidential campaign has put the brakes on ads that were running in seven states carried by the GOP in the 2004 presidential election, FOX News has learned.

Of the seven states — including Alaska, Georgia, Montana, North Carolina, North Dakota — Florida and Virginia are considered key battlegrounds this year. Obama’s decision to stop advertising in those states is raising eyebrows.

Aides to Obama told FOX News that the changes are related to the convention next week. They wouldn’t discuss the specifics of their ad strategy, but the Obama campaign insists that it has not pulled out of those states permanently, calling this a temporary suspension.

When Obama’s campaign took over the Democratic Party earlier this year, it embraced Howard Dean’s 50-state strategy, which is aimed at courting Democrats nationwide. The strategy has generated controversy, though, because many Democrats say it wastes money in states where they have no chance of winning.

Republican U.S. Sen. John McCain enjoys a 16-point lead — 51 percent to 35 percent — among Southern voters over rival Democratic U.S. Sen. Barack Obama, a new poll by Winthrop University and ETV shows.

And, the further into the South you go, the larger McCain's lead grows, the poll of likely voters in 11 Southern states shows.

McCain's strongest support comes from white working-class Southerners — who favor him by a 34-point margin — and white evangelicals — who favor the Arizonan by 54 percentage points.

Individual state-by-state polls have shown Obama within striking distance of McCain in Virginia, North Carolina, Florida and Georgia.

That's no short order in the South, either, said Obama supporter John Hines Jr. of Effingham, S.C. "For older Americans, I think color is still an issue," said the 53-year-old paper maker.

Comparing these new mice to the ordinary ones, the latter ones can run 5 to 8 miles in the hamster wheel, while the former (lazy) ones could do only 0,3 miles. As scientists claim, one of the lazy mice put some sawdust into the wheel and arranged a “bed” out of it. If scientists know, where to find laziness genes in mice, then it has to be possible to find them in humans. And this would probably lead to perfect workaholics made of chronic lazybones, dream the scientists.

Patient dies after being left in chair 22 hours

RALEIGH, North Carolina (AP) -- A mental patient died after workers at a North Carolina hospital left him in a chair for 22 hours without feeding him or helping him use the bathroom, said federal officials who have threatened to cut off the facility's funding.

The state sent a team Tuesday to help Cherry Hospital in Goldsboro draft new procedures to ensure patients receive proper care.

An investigator's report released Monday found that 50-year-old Steven Sabock died in April after he choked on medication and was left sitting in a chair for close to a day at the facility about 50 miles southeast of Raleigh. Surveillance video showed hospital staff watching television and playing cards a few feet away.

Federal officials have threatened to cut off funding because of Sabock's death and a report that a physician punched a patient after the teen bit the doctor.
