Residents on the shores of Loch Ness are having their sleep disturbed by a mystery humming noise similar to that which sparked a spate of calls to a council in Suffolk. Mikko Takala, who lives in a cottage overlooking the loch near Drumnadrochit where he runs a webcam site tracking the elusive Loch Ness Monster, has been having sleepless nights for weeks.His mother, who lives with him, and a near neighbour have also been woken in the wee sma' hours by the same strange humming noise, which one blue blooded Suffolk resident, Lord Philips of Sudbury, said could be mistaken for a spacecraft landing.

"It's a complete mystery because you only seem to hear it from indoors and its exactly the same as what is being experienced in Suffolk.

If someone had said to me a spacecraft had landed on the meadows I would have said, 'well I heard it'.

People oppose it for various reasons, too. They hate the thought of giant turbines marring the primal Catskill vistas. They see wind as a new energy rip-off dependent on federal subsidies. They think turbines create noise and annoying flickers of light. They think the company won’t pay enough to the town, that the turbines could cause fires that would be difficult to control, that they will kill birds and bats. They say it will hurt property values, that they don’t want it in their “viewscape” or in their backyards.

Researchers regrow crucial inner ear cells

clipper's remarks: One of the most common causes of hearing loss, is constant exposure to loud noise, which can literally snap the hairs off the base. The more exposure, the more hairs snap off, and of course now we are beginning to see the effects of the 'ipod syndrome' where the volume is maxed out. Like standing next to speakers that are turned up to 11. (You might need to know about the band Spinal Tap)
There is no doubt that prevention is better than cure, but some people wont listen. Until they reach the point where they can't listen.

US researchers have used gene therapy to regrow the tiny hairs in the inner ear of mice, which they say might lead to new ways of restoring hearing loss in humans.

Dr John Brigande and colleagues at Oregon Health and Science University report their findings in today's issue of Nature.

Sensory hair cells inside the cochlea, the auditory portion of the inner ear, convert sound waves into electrical impulses that are delivered to the brain.

The loss of these minute hairs, or the nerves that control them, is the most common cause of hearing impairment and so-called nerve deafness.

In most cases, damaged hair cells do not regrow in mature humans.

"Our work shows that it is possible to produce functional auditory hair cells in the mammalian cochlea.

it remains to be determined whether gene transfer into a deaf mouse will lead to the production of healthy cells that enable hearing

we have made an important step toward defining an approach that may lead to therapeutic intervention for hearing loss."

HBO has paired with Virgin America to rebrand the airline's flight from New York's John F. Kennedy Intl. Airport to Las Vegas as "Entourage Air" throughout September.

Effort promotes the fifth season of "Entourage," which bows Sept. 7. At the same time, HBO programming becomes available on all Virgin America planes as part of a licensing deal that runs through October 2009.

As part of the promo, Virgin America will introduce "Entourage Class" to first-class passengers, which includes noise-canceling headphones, champagne, Godiva chocolates, Kiehl's products, Altoids and "Entourage Air"-branded blankets and eye masks.

Critics like Mike Berger of the group 9/11 Truth said he was not buying the government's explanation.

"Their explanation simply isn't sufficient. We're being lied to," he said, arguing that there is other evidence suggesting explosives were used on the building.

Sunder said his team investigated the possibility that an explosion inside the building brought it down, but found there was no large boom or other noise that would have occurred with such a detonation. Investigators also created a giant computer model of the collapse, based partly on news footage from CBS News, that they say shows internal column failure brought down the building.

Investigators also ruled out the possibility that the collapse was caused by fires from a substantial amount of diesel fuel that was stored in the building

Thanks to margin in the futures market, you can trade ten times more oil than you could otherwise afford. For only $9,000, you could control more than $140,000 of oil at recent highs.

All told, about one billion barrels of oil are traded daily through futures contracts at the New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX). This volume significantly overshadows the 80 million barrels of oil consumed each day worldwide. Yet this large volume of trading is misleading. Most of the trades are just noise: speculators going for quick profits, taking a position, and closing it out immediately.

Ever wondered how those who have lost their sight can hear so well? Or wondered how it was that someone with no hearing could see so well?

Barone, head researcher of a discovery that was published last week in the journal BMC Neuroscience, believes that humans can hear light and see sound.

Barone believes it is the only explanation from his studies, which focused on two trained monkeys. The monkeys were trained to locate a light flash on a screen. When the light was especially bright, the monkeys had no problem in finding it, while when it was a dimmer flash of light, it took the monkeys longer. However when a brief noise accompanied the flash of light, the monkeys found it very quickly. Barone believes that they found it too quickly, if original thinking is correct.
