clipper's remarks: Olbermann's dominance brings out the worst in Matthews. Even Brokaw. They are both more balanced, when KO is nowhere in sight. An insightful eye can tell the difference when responding to Keith they are timidly stammering for words far enough in the extreme left bias to satisfy him. And their facial expression shows it - clearly. They are resentful, pressured, and under the thumb of Keith Olbermann.
At a later point, with Olbermann gone, they are confident, balanced and natural.
Myself, I can ferret out this kind of passive-aggressive, irresponsible phony journalism. There are just too many out there that cannot see that the line between news and amateurish blog has disappeared ~ probably for ever.

So the recent events in Georgia involving Russian troops sent shock waves all the way down Chicago's Michigan Avenue to Obama headquarters. He decided to call in one of the Senate's top foreign policy experts to counter another of the Senate's top foreign policy experts.

Sen. Barack Obama, the Democrats' about-to-be presidential nominee, has chosen a fellow senator, Joe Biden of Delaware, as his about-to-be running mate for the Nov. 4 general election.

Two high-ranking Democratic Party officials have confirmed the choice of the veteran to The Times. Republican reaction is included at the end of this item.

The official announcement should come shortly, as promised, in an e-mail and text message dispatched to hundreds of thousands of Obama supporters around the world.

Biden, who's been a senator since Richard M. Nixon trounced George McGoven for reelection in 1972, was picked because of his long experience in foreign policy and national security affairs.

The Real Price of Oil

The bottom purple line is the price of a barrel of crude oil per ounce of gold (if you wanted to use gold to pay for a barrel of oil). As you can see, that line is stable, and has been for the entirety of the graph, which is about 7 years.
The top two lines are the price of oil in relation to currency (blue is the Dollar and the red is the Euro). Those lines show that the cost of oil has been going up in relation to currency only. What this chart makes obvious is that the value of oil has not been increasing in real terms, currency has just been decreasing in value.

To put it another way, if the US Dollar were still based on gold (as it was until Nixon eliminated the Bretton Woods system in 1971), then the price of oil would be just as stable as that purple line in the chart is.

So oil is worth the same, and the US dollar is just worth less. Maybe we need to shift our focus away from war and drilling; and towards a better economic policy at home.

Thoughts on Not Giving McCain money (0.00 / 0)

Aside from McCain's pretty daughter who has a blog, I think McCain is doing a pretty horrendous job of speaking to young people as evidenced by his lack of discussion of one of the biggest benefits of serving in the military: money for college education. It's almost absent from his campaign page for veterans, and not supporting the Webb GI Bill was a huge mistake.

George W. Bush has been celebrating the twilight of his disastrous presidency by seemingly spending the entirety of 2008 overseas. Right now, as NBC constantly reminds us, he's in Beijing, enjoying the Olympics. Also with him is internationally beloved teddy bear war criminal Henry Kissinger! (Read on to learn why this is yet another example of how terrible NBC is.)

We thought it had been a while since Kissinger had left the country, because every time he tries to go to Europe someone threatens to put him in front of a tribunal, but there he is in China, happily napping. Of course Kissinger is a dear, dear friend of China, and has been ever since the Nixon administration. China is a fantastic example of Kissinger's particular brand of international relations at work—the markets are free, and in another couple decades maybe the invisible hand will stop all those human rights abuses. In the meantime, let's do some business!
