You can give "keywords" to your bookmarks by right-clicking the bookmark and then
Properties. If you put a string in the keyword field now you can type that keyword in
the address bar and it will go to that bookmark. For example, if I have a bookmark for
Fox News website, I might give it the keyword "news". Now, when I type "news" in the
address bar and hit 'enter', the Fox News site is loaded.

Close a tab

Boom, burst, bust, repeat. And yet some Web sites seem to operate outside the fray, delivering a consistent user experience and gradually evolving instead of flaring up or flaming out. Here at PC Magazine, we call these Web sites the classics both because they tend to be established destinations and because they set the standards for the rest of the Web.

Here is our canon of the top 101 classics for 2006, humbly submitted for you perusal. You've probably heard of many or even most of them, but it's our hope that all of our readers will find something new or rediscover a forgotten favorite on the list.

Her name is Jennifer Parcell, and she died in Iraq. But you'd be lucky if you could find any mention of her, amidst the front page and wall-to-wall media coverage of the likely drug-related death of "starlet" Smith.

In fact, as of noon today, there were only seven press mentions, all in the area of her native Maryland, according to a Google search.

In contrast to, say, Anna Nicole Smith, Parcell seemed to have a serious side. Even in Iraq, she was managing to take a course at the University of Maryland, the Baltimore Sun relates, adding: "Helping others was routine for the Marine corporal. She sponsored an African child through a mission charity. And when Pakistan was devastated by an earthquake last year, she and others in her unit were dispatched to the scene. She earned the Humanitarian Service Medal for her efforts."

In fact, the Sun, in a separate story noted: "With the death of reality TV star Anna Nicole Smith yesterday, a ferocious barrage of Marilyn Monroe-like images and scattershot speculation was instantly loosed across the on-air and online landscape of 24-hour news...The one constant: The story was consistently framed in a breathless tabloid manner."

The cause of Parcell's death has not yet been released. The Pentagon notice simply says that she died "supporting" combat operations in Anbar province, not actually in combat.

It would be nice, he suggests, if just one cable news channel, instead of dwelling on Anna Nicole, would bring on a medical expert "to talk about the type of combat injuries that America's fighting men and women are suffering in Iraq, and whether the troops have adequate protection." Or maybe find a friend or colleague in the field who could tell us about Parcell's life, "and our loss."

Tags: news, war

<clipSource>http://editorandpublisher.com/eandp/news/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003544088</clipSource>

Have Sex, Live Longer

clipped by: haraya
clipper's remarks: Sequel to the Eat Less, Live Longer article. Or perhaps the headline of this post should read, "American media: you suck at fact-checking."

Iran's state-run media agency has been accused before of having digitally manipulated images released to foreign media. This week, as word spread of purported missile tests in Iran, the validity of an image of four missiles shooting into the sky turned out to be photoshopped -- but not before a bunch of big news organizations printed it as legit.

Agence France-Presse said that it obtained the image from the Web site of Sepah News, the media arm of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, on Wednesday. But there was no sign of it there later in the day. Today, The Associated Press distributed what appeared to be a nearly identical photo from the same source, but without the fourth missile.

This morning, Agence France-Presse retracted the image as “apparently digitally altered.”

Tags: photoshop, photography, photo manipulation

<clipSource>http://www.boingboing.net/2008/07/10/iran-you-suck-at-pho.html</clipSource>

The 10 big stories the major news media refused to cover over the last year

clipped by: frenchcanmonkey
clipper's remarks: I never cease to be amazed at how important findings can be cut and be replaced by entertainment news. Halliburton Charged With Selling Nuclear Technology to Iran

Halliburton, the notorious US energy company, sold key nuclear reactor components to a private Iranian oil company called Oriental Oil Kish as recently as 2005, using offshore subsidiaries to circumvent US sanctions, journalist Jason Leopold reported on GlobalResearch.ca, the Web site of a Canadian research group. He cited sources intimate with the business dealings of Halliburton and Kish.

The story is particularly juicy because Vice President Dick Cheney, who now claims to want to stop Iran from getting nukes, was president of Halliburton in the mid-1990s, at which time he may have advocated business dealings with Iran, in violation of US law.

08. The stated reason for this dramatic and dangerous move? FOIA is a hindrance to protecting national security. The ruling could hamper the efforts of groups like the ACLU, which relied on FOIA to uncover more than 30,000 documents on the US military's torture of detainees in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Guantánamo Bay, including the Abu Ghraib torture scandal.

Tags: media, journalism

<clipSource>http://www.toledocitypaper.com/view_article.php?id=187</clipSource>

America not at war...photo

clipped by: jatfla
clipper's remarks: Posted at my favorite news forum.

Clip Source: www.lucianne.com

Tags: iraq, military, photography

<clipSource>http://www.lucianne.com/</clipSource>
