The Rocky Mountain News covered the story this way, along with festive pink pictures:

A river of pink flooded downtown Denver this morning as more than 60,000 people ran and walked in the 16th annual Komen Race for the Cure to support people affected by breast cancer.

That was the liberal half of the news. The other half of the news was that CO Right to Lifers wanting ignorant women to learn a significant but covered up cause of breast cancer - abortion - parked a Truth Truck along the parade route and also picketed with signs....

The other half of the news was that a man jumped out of the crowd and grabbed
Leslie Hanks' signs and literature and tried to destroy them. The cops arrested him, slapped him in cuffs, and Leslie filed a complaint.

The thing that annoys me is that Nintendo made a special Nintendo DS Lite that's white with the pink ribbon and will donate around $100,000 from sales of these hand held video game systems to Susan G. Komen.

Governor Sanford Welcomes Google to Berkeley County SC at the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

Google welcomed hundreds of members of the Berkeley County community to the opening celebration of its new 600 million Data Center with a ribbon cutting ceremony. The event was mainly to thank the community, and the many regional and state leaders who helped make the Google data center a reality.

"This community embodies Google's creative, entrepreneurial and hard-working culture," said Andy Johnson, Google's Manager for Global Data Center Development. "We feel extremely fortunate to be part of such a welcoming community and a state so dedicated to fostering an environment that encourages innovation."

Governor Sanford and local leaders were present to give their own personal celebratory speech in appreciation of Google choosing SC and Berkeley County for their newest data center venture.

Sumatra’s historic agreement in Barcelona

The Indonesian government and WWF today announced a bold commitment to protect the remaining forests and critical ecosystems of Sumatra today at IUCN’s World Conservation Congress.

Sumatra is an Indonesian island that holds some of the world’s most diverse – and endangered – forests.

The commitment announced today has been endorsed by governors of all provinces across Sumatra, and by four Ministers.

Hermien Roosita, Deputy Minister of Environment, says this is the first island wide commitment. “This agreement commits all the Governors of Sumatra’s 10 provinces, along with the Indonesian Ministries of Forestry, Environment, Interior and Public World, to restore critical ecosystems in Sumatra and protect areas with high conservation values,” he said.

Big Brother Listening in on Personal Phone Calls

clipper's remarks: If these allegations turn out to be true, it will only be further proof that this administration refuses to follow the letter of the law.

There are clear stipulations concerning when eavesdropping without a court order can be used and, of course, the NSA claims it operates in “strict accordance with U.S. laws and regulations”. What else are they going to say?

It is despicable that our government has turned itself into such a distrusting caretaker.

The flip side to this story is that the two individuals could have made this up for the purpose of having contributed to a book that author Jim Bamford is writing. This could also be a stunt to get his name in front of the public and increase sales.

See what we have become? It is now so easy to believe that everyone is capable of lying to satisfy some ulterior motive that no news item can be taken at face value.

This country is in serious need of an ethical makeover.

Congress is looking into allegations that National Security Agency linguists have been eavesdropping on Americans abroad.

The allegations were made by two former military intercept operators on a television news report Thursday evening.

A terrorist surveillance program instituted by the Bush administration allows the intelligence community to monitor phone calls between the United States and overseas without a court order -- as long as one party to the call is a terror suspect.

Adrienne Kinne, a former U.S. Army Reserves Arab linguist, told ABC News the NSA was listening to the phone calls of U.S. military officers, journalists and aid workers overseas who were talking about "personal, private things with Americans who are not in any way, shape or form associated with anything to do with terrorism."

when linguists complained to supervisors about eavesdropping on personal conversations, they were ordered to continue transcribing the calls.

FOX News Upset At Newsweek For Printing An Un-Retouched Photo of Sarah Palin

The GOP and their propaganda arm, FOX News, are up in arms over the latest Newsweek cover of Sarah Palin that accompanies this scathing article by Jon Meacham. The article, that points to Palin's "commonness" as a problem to her credibility as a candidate, is less of a concern to the GOP than the fact that they did a close up of her face and did not retouch it to hide blemishes and pores. And you may remember, FOX knows about retouching photos for credibility's sake.

Apparently, they're not as afraid of their supporters reading as they are of them looking at pictures and realizing that Palin's skin isn't peaches and cream perfect.

Ummmmm...Did Beavis and Butthead guest-host this show? What a lil perv! Although she's just trying to sound smart, she uses the term correctly; however, it's generally used in medical context.

I think she used the word she wanted. "Exogenous" - caused by external factors. If we think of the electoral campaign as a system, then any events that come from outside that system, such as natural or economic disasters, are exogenous factors. As opposed to endogenous factors, which are the stump speeches on each side and the mud-slinging generated by the McCain campaign.

Consider the subtexts of this passage in the story: "Mr. Stewart ... and his writers have energetically tackled the big issues of the day -- 'the stuff we find most interesting,' as he said in an interview at the show's Midtown Manhattan offices, the stuff that gives them the most 'agita,' the sometimes somber stories he refers to as his 'morning cup of sadness.' And they've done so in ways that straight news programs cannot: speaking truth to power in blunt, sometimes profane language, while using satire and playful looniness to ensure that their political analysis never becomes solemn or pretentious."

If -- as the New York Times soberly reported in the article -- "straight news programs cannot" tackle the "big issues of the day" while "speaking truth to power," we should ask a key question: Why not?
