The 10 Richest Streets in the World

The Times of London has come up with a new list of the world's 10 richest streets based on property prices. The most expensive street on the globe, unsurprisingly, is in ultra-rich Monaco - Avenue Princess Grace, to be exact, where average prices run about $17,000 per sq. ft. It's a pretty safe bet that anyone with an address there is a millionaire at the very least. In second place is Severn Road in Hong Kong's Victoria Peak district (above), where the average price is about $11,000 per sq. ft. Here are the rest of the runners-up:

Native corporations leap into wireless

A trio of Alaska Native corporations is working together to enter the wireless industry and plans to serve major markets that include Los Angeles and New York.

However, some critics are questioning the outcome of the process that helped the consortium acquire rights to those markets.

Officials from Alaska Native Wireless believe the bids represent the largest acquisition ever of federal communications licenses by a minority-controlled entity.

Alaska Native Wireless, with its partner AT&T Wireless, was the high bidder on almost $2.9 billion in wireless licenses covering 43 markets with a total population of 71 million. Markets include Los Angeles, New York City, Denver, Tampa, Fla., Cleveland, Jacksonville, Fla., Minneapolis, New Haven, Conn., and Portland, Ore.

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani castigated Democratic Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois as a flipflopping lightweight in his keynote address Wednesday night, launching the heaviest sustained attack so far on the Democratic ticket at the Republican National Convention.

Giuliani discarded that playbook, casting Obama as “a gifted man with an Ivy League education” who was “immersed ... in Chicago machine politics.” He described Obama as a no-show during his tenure in the Illinois state Senate and a man who, once he got to Washington, was a “celebrity senator [with] no leadership, no legislation to really speak of.”

“This is not a personal attack. It’s a statement of fact,” he said. “Barack Obama has never led anything. Nothing. Nada. Nada. Nothing.”

Jihadi Carried Notes of 'Mass Casualty' Attacks on NY Targets

NEW YORK - A U.S.-educated Pakistani woman was carrying handwritten notes referring to a "mass casualty attack" and listing the Empire State Building and other New York landmarks when she was detained in Afghanistan, prosecutors said Tuesday.

In an attempted-murder indictment unsealed in federal court in Manhattan, prosecutors for the first time publicly named some of the landmarks. The others: the Statue of Liberty, Wall Street, the Brooklyn Bridge and Plum Island, a disease research complex in Long Island Sound.

Aafia Siddiqui had notes "that referred to a 'mass casualty attack'" and to "the construction of dirty bombs, chemical and biological weapons and other explosives," the indictment said. "These notes also discussed the mortality rates associated with certain of these weapons and explosives."

Other documents "referred to specific 'cells' and 'attacks' by certain 'cells' ... and discussed recruitment and training," the papers said.

First Wind faces mainland investigation

First Wind, a wind energy company that has pledged $50 million to help buy Molokai Ranch lands, is under investigation on the mainland for allegations of improper dealings with public officials and anti-competitive practices.

New York State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo began investigations in July to find out if the company obtained land-use agreements with residents and public officials through bribes and submitted false statements for permits and during environmental studies.

At the same time, if the argument is that the shoot is distasteful because of the vast povery in India, then the condemnation would seem unjustified.

Vogue India has created a brouhaha over its controversial spread featuring poor citizens styled with luxury items. The editorial has stirred enough emotion and debate to be carried across several oceans and into the pages of the New York Times and countless fashion blogs.

The main contention seems to be that in a country where many people live on less than $1.25 a day, it is distasteful and vulgar to pair a $10,000 Hermès Birkin bag with a peasant who may never amass that sum during the course of her life.

Commenting on the story, Vogue India Editor Priya Tanna told the New York Times,

“Lighten up.” Vogue is about realizing the “power of fashion” she said, and the shoot was saying that “fashion is no longer a rich man’s privilege. Anyone can carry it off and make it look beautiful,” she said.

“You have to remember with fashion, you can’t take it that seriously,” Ms. Tanna said. “We weren’t trying to make a political statement or save the world,” she said.

The New York Times is reporting President Bush is seeking Congress to explicitly acknowledge that the nation remains engaged in an armed conflict with al-Qaeda, the Taliban and associated organizations. The measure carries significant legal and public policy implications for Bush, and potentially his successor. It would allow them to claim the approval of Congress to use the tools of war, including detention, interrogation and surveillance, against the enemy. Some lawmakers are concerned that the administration’s effort to declare anew a war footing is an eleventh-hour maneuver to reestablish its broad interpretation of the president’s wartime powers, even in the face of challenges from the Supreme Court and Congress. It is uncertain whether Congress will take the administration up on its request.
