(On the first point, at the Gun Owners of New Hampshire dinner in the 2000 campaign, I remember Orrin Hatch telling me sadly that he was stunned to discover how few Granite State voters knew who he was.) Sarah Palin and Barack Obama are more or less the same age, but Governor Palin has run a state and a town and a commercial fishing operation, whereas (to reprise a famous line on the Rev Jackson) Senator Obama ain't run nothin' but his mouth. She's done the stuff he's merely a poseur about. Post-partisan? She took on her own party's corrupt political culture directly while Obama was sucking up to Wright and Ayers and being just another get-along Chicago machine pol.

First, Governor Palin is not merely, as Jay describes her, "all-American", but hyper-American. What other country in the developed world produces beauty queens who hunt caribou and serve up a terrific moose stew? As an immigrant, I'm not saying I came to the United States purely to meet chicks like that, but it was certainly high on my list of priorities. And for the gun-totin' Miss Wasilla then to go on to become Governor while having five kids makes it an even more uniquely American story. Next to her resume, a guy who's done nothing but serve in the phony-baloney job of "community organizer" and write multiple autobiographies looks like just another creepily self-absorbed lifelong member of the full-time political class that infests every advanced democracy.

Second, it can't be in Senator Obama's interest for the punditocracy to spends its time arguing about whether the Republicans' vice-presidential pick is "even more" inexperienced than the Democrats' presidential one.

When things appear bleak elsewhere in the nation, they can seem desperate in Michigan, which has hemorrhaged manufacturing jobs and been hit hard by the foreclosure crisis. But no one knows quite how the tough times will affect the presidential contest in Michigan. The Democrats would have great difficulty winning the White House without Michigan.

Despite the GOP's optimism that McCain might be Reagan's heir in Michigan--a flag-waving maverick who can attract independents as well as conservative or centrist Democrats--plenty of political observers believe that Obama can win a "change" election in the state, pitted against a 71-year-old longtime GOP senator who wants to follow the unpopular two-term Bush. Indeed, ever since Obama ended his wrestling match with Clinton and began showering attention on Michigan, he has inched ahead of McCain, some polls indicate.

In March 2008, eighty-six people across six nationwide panels participated in the National Citizens’ Technology Forum on “Human Enhancement Through Nanotechnology.” These citizens ranged from teens to seniors and had no previous expertise or experience in nanotechnology. They studied background material, met face-to-face, and participated in nine, two-hour Internet discussion forums with scientist experts. During their final meeting, each panel wrote a Citizen’s Report that outlines their optimism, concerns and recommendations regarding human enhancement technologies.

The reports address socio-economic, safety, environmental, health and governance issues, as well as regulatory challenges and human identity concerns. This project gives average citizens a voice in the early stages of nano-scale science and engineering research and development.

Joe Biden to the New Hampshire Leader in 2007:

Biden was generally critical of the far left wing of his party and of the strategies the frontrunners are using to win the nomination.

He said Democrats would do better if they stopped dividing the electorate by playing to their base and instead brought people together. He criticized the left wing of his party for demonizing the rich and Republicans.

“Rich folks are as patriotic as poor folks, but we don’t talk that way,” he said.

He criticized Hillary Clinton for antagonizing Republicans:

When Hillary Clinton has bragged about how she upsets the right wing, he said he’s wanted to tell her, “If you weren’t the nominee, the right wing would not be so exercised.”

He doesn’t think he would draw as much conservative ire and could even win over independents and some Republicans, he said.

Ashtabula County covered bridge will be nation's longest

This is big news, folks. Really big.

Ashtabula County is set to dedicate the nation's longest covered bridge on Tuesday. (Take that, New Hampshire and Vermont.) The intricate wooden span stretches 613 feet, like a lumber yard pieced together above the flowing floor of the Ashtabula River valley.

Workers spent two years prepping the site and connecting beefy boards of Southern yellow pine to replace a deteriorated steel bridge along State Road. The record-breaker cost a few splinters less than $8 million, a bill shouldered by federal, state and local tax dollars.

The result is . . . well, simply massive. "It's going to grab some attention," promised Tim Martin, the county's engineer.

Officials expect covered-bridge fans from across the United States to find their way to Ohio's northeast corner to view the green monster. Parking areas are planned near both ends of the structure.

McCain Doesn't Disagree that We Might Need a Draft

Soltz added, "When you take into account his indefinite military commitment to Iraq, his desire to send more troops to Afghanistan, record lows in recruiting and retention, and possibly more wars he is looking to get into, like "Bomb Bomb Bomb" Iran, his numbers don't add up without a draft. Whether America likes it or not isn't relevant - a draft is the only way to do everything Senator McCain wants to do. I give him points for being honest and upfront, though, that we're going to need a draft if he is elected."

This isn't the first time that Senator McCain has hinted at a reinstitution of the draft if he is elected. Asked on September 29, 2007 in New Hampshire about the draft, McCain said he would "consider it."

This is absolutely amazing. A woman told John McCain today that we might need a draft to accomplish all his foreign policy goals. And he said he didn't disagree.
