How many relationships slip unconsciously into that kind of entanglement? In our view, far too many. We propose a new approach. Conscious loving is founded on a set of principles and practices completely opposite from the ones David and Elizabeth considered.

What would a new set of wedding vows be based on? Emotional transparency, for sure. In working with thousands of couples, we have heard the complaint "You never tell me how you're feeling" many thousands of times. It takes courage, and a great deal of practice, to be able to talk about feelings in a straightforward way. We've seen many arguments stop when one person has the courage to say "I'm scared" or "I'm sad."

Lobbyist Abramoff gets 4 more years in prison

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff was sentenced on Thursday to serve four more years in prison in a corruption scandal that rocked Washington's power elite and helped Republicans lose control of Congress.

Abramoff is already serving a nearly six-year term on unrelated charges and the new sentence will be served at the same time, meaning he will not spend any extra time behind bars once his original sentence ends in 2012.

But Abramoff will serve at least four more years in prison, even if his lawyers are successful in getting a reduction in his first sentence on charges of fraud in the purchase of a Florida casino cruise line. When his terms expire, he will have spent nearly six years in prison.

Judge Ellen Huvelle passed sentence after federal prosecutors recommended leniency due to Abramoff's cooperation in pursuing corruption cases against lawmakers and former Bush administration officials. He faced a maximum of 11 years under a plea deal reached in 2006.

Deal Sheet: Frankenstein, Jekyll, Tarzan Resurrected

The fantastical filmmaker has been tapped by Universal to helm remakes of Frankenstein and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, per Variety, along with a big-screen adaptation of Charles Dickens' final novel The Mystery of Edwin Drood simply titled Drood, and a new take on Kurt Vonnegut's cult novel Slaughterhouse-Five.

Universal has also committed to another del Toro dream project, a big-screen version of horrormeister H.P. Lovecraft's At the Mountains of Madness. Del Toro will also produce two films for the studio, an adaptation of David Moody's apocalyptic tome Hater and Crimson Peak, a gothic romance del Toro cowrote with his Mimic collaborator Matthew Robbins.

"What is frightening is that the Hoyo appears to be leaking from an area where oil was stored," Jeffery told New Scientist.

Nor is the Hoyo Maru the only ship to be leaking oil – although for now, it is the only tanker which has been seen to leak.

Jeffery and his colleagues are now seeking Japanese historians and shipping experts who could remotely assess the contents of the Hoyo's oil storage tanks. If the ship is found to contain large amounts of diesel, this will need to be pumped out in order to avoid severe damage to the local biodiversity and economy.

The situation is likely to repeat itself around the Pacific over coming years. "A lot of these wrecks are in areas where the communities just don't have the resources to deal with oil pollution," warns Jeffery.

In 2003, the US government pumped 10 million litres of fuel from the sunken hull of the USS Mississinewa, a US tanker that was destroyed by the Japanese in 1944 in the Western Pacific.

A sunken oil tanker, one of dozens on the bottom of Micronesia's Chuuk Lagoon, is releasing streams of purple diesel bubbles. On 31 July, the resulting oil slick was 5 kilometres long.

Corrosion experts say the 52 wrecks in Chuuk Lagoon could collapse in a few years, yet no-one knows how much fuel was inside the vessels when they sank. The problem could take on astonishing proportions: more than 380 other tankers lie at the bottom of the Pacific.

The wrecks are overgrown with coral, house a huge diversity of tropical fish, and attract tourists, who provide welcome income to the local population.

The teams were told from the start that the wrecks occasionally leaked fuel, which at times washed up on local islands, polluting mangroves. It was originally thought that the leaks were of aviation fuel – some of the sunken ships carried thin drums of fuel to supply Japanese fighter planes in the region.

We DO Need More Domestic Energy...BUT...

clipper's remarks: Bush is absolutely right (I can't believe I'm saying that) - we absolutely do need to focus on more domestic energy production to reduce and ultimately eliminate out reliance on the Middle East.

He's absolutely wrong however (now that's more like it) when he says we need to get that additional domestic energy by drilling for more oil off-shore.

Pretty much all major scientific research - and even a great deal of the public - agree oil is not the answer to our energy crisis. There is only so much oil and any additional drilling will be far outnumbered by the increase in usage that will have occurred when we finally get that new oil online.

Could drilling for new oil help lower gas/fuel prices? Sure it could temporarily. But that would only slightly delay the inevitable. We NEED to reduce our energy consumption until we can find alternative and more abundant sources of clean energy to meet our needs.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Bush said Tuesday that while it's too early to assess Hurricane Gustav's damage to U.S. oil infrastructure off the Gulf Coast, the storm should prompt Congress to OK more domestic oil production.

"One thing is for certain, when Congress comes back, they've got to understand that we need more domestic energy, not less," Bush said in the Roosevelt Room.

He added: "One place to find it is offshore America -- lands that have been taken off the books, so to speak, by congressional law -- and now they need to give us a chance to find more oil and gas here at home.

EU suspends talks with Russia pact over Georgia

European Union leaders have agreed to suspend talks on a new partnership agreement with Moscow until Russian troops have withdrawn from Georgia.

EU Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said it was clear it could not "continue as if nothing had happened", after an emergency summit in Brussels.

The EU also condemned Russia's move to recognise the independence of Georgia's regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

Russia has warned further support for Georgia would be a "historic" mistake.

The EU's foreign policy chief, Javier Solana, meanwhile said it was prepared to send hundreds of civilian monitors to Georgia to check if Russia was abiding by the EU-brokered ceasefire agreement.

Speaking after EU leaders met in Brussels to discuss the crisis, Mr Barroso and French President Nicolas Sarkozy announced they had agreed to postpone talks on an EU-Russia partnership deal.

the talks, originally scheduled for mid-September, would depend on Russian forces moving back to their pre-7 August positions

US intelligence fears the Kremlin will supply the sophisticated S-300 system to Tehran if Washington pushes through Nato membership for its pro-Western neighbours Georgia and Ukraine.

The proposed deal is causing huge alarm in the US and Israel as the S-300 can track 100 targets at once and fire on planes up to 75 miles away.

That would make it a "game-changer", greatly improving Iranian defences against any air strike on its nuclear sites, according to Pentagon adviser Dan Goure. "This is a system that scares every Western air force," he said.

Senior US intelligence operatives believe that Russia is planning to use a stand-off over the S-300 to create a foreign policy showdown that would test the mettle of a new US president.

A senior Iranian military commander warned

"Any aggression against Iran will start a world war,"

If you are feeling anxious — and you should be — about the world’s appetite for nuclear weapons, there is a bit of good news. More countries than we ever expected are refusing to be pressured by the United States and India to approve an ill-conceived nuclear deal.

For 30 years, ever since India used its civilian nuclear program to produce a bomb, the world has been banned from selling nuclear technology to India. Three years ago, President Bush agreed, with far too few conditions, to break that ban and sell India reactors and fuel.

The White House argued that India is an important democracy and shrugged off critics who said that breaking the rules would make it even harder to pressure Iran and others to abandon their nuclear ambitions.

But before it can go forward, the 45-member Nuclear Suppliers Group (which sets rules for nuclear trade) must also agree.

clipper's remarks: When she was being vetted, Palin made an interesting statement which is being taken out of context now. She said that she would not leave her job as Governor unless she was assured the VP role would make a difference in its day to day operation. In other words, she understands historically that the VP can be a very important role in an administration or a one not much more influential than Miss America. She was not interested in being McCain’s token. She wanted to contribute. That tells you volumes about the Governor.

She represents a turn in the party from poking fun at the vision thing to some one who believes government should represent the hockey moms, fishermen, teachers, and small business people in its policies again. The Republican Party chose to give more than lip service to majority of the people.

The reform wing of the Republican Party has triumphed. Reformer John McCain turned his back on the Washington Republican establishment and turned toward the working people of America. I will not go over the accomplishments of Governor Palin, just read my other posts and comments. I am focusing on what this choice means to the party.

The combination of McCain Palin is a profound one. It brings together the national security wing with the social wing. It takes the party away from the big spending heresy which infected it. It is a fiscal conservatism not only of tax cuts, but of spending restraint. It puts two bold and courageous people at the head of the party. It signifies that the party is under new management.

Senator John McCain has chosen to break with the Washington consultant establishment, which is ruining the party in a profound way. He deserves a great deal of credit.

New Orleans Orders Mandatory Evacuation

From there, they were boarding motor coaches bound for shelters in north Louisiana. The city expects to move out about 30,000 such residents by Sunday.

Unlike Katrina, when thousands took refuge inside the Superdome, there will be no "last resort" shelter. "You will be on your own," Nagin said.

About 1,500 National Guard troops were in the region, and soldiers were expected to help augment about 1,400 New Orleans police officers in helping patrol and secure the city.

Standing outside his restaurant in the city's Faubourg Marigny district, Dale DeBruyne prepared for Gustav the way he did for Katrina - stubbornly.

"I'm not leaving," he said.

DeBruyne, 52, said his house was stocked with storm supplies, including generators.

The evacuation of New Orleans becomes mandatory at 8 a.m. Sunday along the vulnerable west bank of the Mississippi River, and at noon on the east bank.

"This is the real deal, this is not a test," Nagin said as he issued the order, warning residents that staying would be "one of the biggest mistakes you could make in your life." He emphasized that the city will not offer emergency services to anyone who chooses to stay behind.

It went from a tropical storm to a Category 4 hurricane in about 24 hours, and was likely to become a Category 5 - with sustained winds of 156 mph or more - by Sunday.

Even before the evacuation order, hotels closed, and the airport prepared to follow suit.

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff planned to travel to Louisiana on Sunday to observe preparations. Also, likely GOP presidential nominee John McCain and his running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, are traveling to Mississippi on Sunday to check on people getting prepared.
