So anyways, the other day I heard a funny joke. Would it be good for me if I told it here?

Ok, I'll take your silence for approval. Now be forewarned, I'm an Evangelical Christian but not everyone will think this is funny.

But think about it - If Jesus had been electrocuted instead of crucified, would we Christians be wearing miniature electric chairs around our necks? Would we have electric chair steeples? Would urban churches have neon electric chair signs?

It means something that would cause a white supremecist to commit harakiri if their daughters did.

I just bury the ratesque posts without reading them because they're so long. Really, submit an article if you are that excited about it.

Got Fruit? contains pictures of fruit and vegetables, mostly. There's also a box of Ring Dings and a bagel. It looks a bit like one of those "Fruitopia" commercials. These pictures were originally used on the now defunct 'Home Grocer' service. They make a damn fine kaleidoscope.

Got Neon? has pictures of common neon signs seen in bars and restaurants. I animated them so that the signs blink like real neon signs. This is a pretty kaleidoscope, although it tends to make me thirsty for some reason...

The law is "a rare victory of the public interest over private, of order over disorder, aesthetics over ugliness, of cleanliness over trash," Roberto Pompeu de Toledo, a columnist and author of a history of São Paulo, wrote in the weekly newsmagazine Veja. "For once in life, all that is accustomed to coming out on top in Brazil has lost."

How to Make Great Photos in Crappy Locations

Don't let your creative juices be stymied by lame excuses like "If I only lived in Yosemite," "If I only could take vacation in the sandstone slot canyons of the American Southwest," and "If I was only close to an ocean."

Big deal. If you did all you'd probably do is make more of the same clichéed photos we've already seen.

RECOMMENDATIONS

Open your eyes

We all overlook what we see every day. We take it for granted. These things are dull to us, but often interesting to others. Photograph what's unique about your area. If you live in the Arctic, try seeing patterns in ice lit by moonlight or igloos lit from whale-blubber oil lamps within. If everything's dark and crappy, don't complain: make photos exaggerating just how bad things are.

Look for color - anywhere

Even the grayest of places has its color. Look for neon and other signs at night. They're even better in the rain when you can catch the colors glinting off the streets.

Make time exposures outdoors at night. Even though you may not see colors with your eyes, cameras (digital and film) will pick up and highlight colors in low light. The more varied the lighting, the better. Make photos inside an area with varied lighting, for instance, a shopping mall. The camera will accentuate these differences between tungsten, fluorescent, sodium and metal halide light which are invisible to our eyes.

My work is about color. I keep my eyes peeled and find it all over. Maybe it's a fire extinguisher on the wall of an auto repair station. Maybe it's one bright boxcar in the middle of a railroad yead. Maybe it's little bit of red panty sneaking out from a girl's jeans. It's out there. You just need to look for it.

What sticks out?

Look for anything out of place. Look for what stands out and ask yourself why it stands out. Make photos to highlight whatever it is that makes something catch your eye.

Visit the temples that grace the hills of Kyoto, Japan's ancient capital, and it's not hard to see why the city seems like the perfect birthplace for the global-warming pact that was named for it. At the end of my trip last November, I toured the grounds of Nanzenji, a Buddhist complex that sprawls through the wooded slopes to the east of the city, and watched red and gold leaves fall upon a rock garden, where they were swept up by monks. Kyoto's temples show how humans can live in nature and actually add to it, not just take from it.

Then I caught a cab back to the city center. The moment we left the temple, we struck gridlock on Kyoto's narrow streets. As we crawled toward the train station, I had ample time to look at the garish neon signs that seemed to sprout from every rooftop, transforming the scenery even as they spent energy. It was a reminder that while Kyoto embodies the aspirations of that famous protocol, it is still a modern city, with all the energy, cars and carbon that implies.

So it is with all of Japan. The world's second largest economy is undeniably its most efficient wealthy energy user, burning barely more than half as much oil per capita as the U.S. does and producing half as much carbon per person. What's more, it's not just energy hogs like the U.S. that Japan puts to shame; it even beats stridently green countries like Germany. But while Japan takes its Kyoto Protocol commitments seriously, it's still likely to fall far short of those goals.

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - Amsterdam's famed red light district held its first ever "open day" Saturday as its peep-shows and brothels gave crowds of wide-eyed visitors free entry to help shed the area's increasingly negative reputation.

Armed with a list of 25 establishments opening their doors and flinging back their red curtains, hundreds of tourists and locals seized the opportunity to see a prostitute's bedroom, watch a brief live peep-show or chat to a lap dancer.

Harrowing reports of forced prostitution and human trafficking have caused a public outcry in recent months and even prompted calls from councillors for the 800-year-old red light district to be shut down, to the fury of many sex workers.

Stories of petty crime and gang violence also dominate.

"The open day is partly to promote the red light district but also to help change the image of the area because we think it is too negative," said organizer Mariska Majoor, a former prostitute who now runs an information center on the district.

"There are not just problems here," she added.

Prostitution has been fully legal in the Netherlands since 2000, and sex workers are self-employed and subject to tax.

However one rights group estimates that around 3,500 women are trafficked to the Netherlands each year from eastern Europe and Asia to work in secret brothels or illegal escort agencies, where they are often held captive and abused.

Tourist authorities admit the district -- a clutch of narrow alleys and canals lined with sex shops, brothels and neon signs -- is as big an attraction as Amsterdam's museums and coffee shops, where marijuana is freely smoked and sold.

Every night visitors throng the streets, agog at the scantily clad women sitting behind huge red-lit windows, but only a fraction venture inside.
