Study: Facebook profiles can be used to detect narcissism

A new University of Georgia study suggests that online social networking sites such as Facebook might be useful tools for detecting whether someone is a narcissist.

"We found that people who are narcissistic use Facebook in a self-promoting way that can be identified by others," said lead author Laura Buffardi, a doctoral student in psychology who co-authored the study with associate professor W. Keith Campbell.

The researchers, whose results appear in the October issue of the journal Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, gave personality questionnaires to nearly 130 Facebook users, analyzed the content of the pages and had untrained strangers view the pages and rate their impression of the owner's narcissism.

The researchers found that the number of Facebook friends and wallposts that individuals have on their profile pages correlates with narcissism. Buffardi said this is consistent with how narcissists behave in the real-world, with numerous yet shallow relationships. Narcissists are also more likely to choose glamorous, self-promoting pictures for their main profile photos, she said, while others are more likely to use snapshots.

The researchers found that the observers used three characteristics – quantity of social interaction, attractiveness of the individual and the degree of self promotion in the main photo – to form an impression of the individual's personality.

A handsome teacher in China is offering pupils autographed photos of himself to encourage them to work harder.

Ji Feng, also vice principal of Zhiyuan Foreign Language Elementary School, is so popular among students that a lot of them were asking him for pictures.

"I came up with the idea of giving them my signed pictures as a reward," he told the Nanjing Morning Post.

Students who put in exemplary work can now pose for a picture with Ji who then signs the printed photograph.

Ji added: "It absolutely is not narcissism, but a way of encouragement. And only the students who perform the best can get such a reward."

Ji said three students had so far submitted work good enough for signed pictures - but he hoped to give out many more.

Ancient bronze mirrors stolen from museum

BEIJING (Reuters) - A bronze mirror that is more than 1,600 years old was stolen from a museum in Dunhuang in northwest China's Gansu Province, the Xinhua news agency said Wednesday, citing a museum curator.

The mirror, dating from the Wei and Jin Dynasties (220-420 AD), and three others of lesser value went missing from the Dunhuang Municipal Museum during opening hours on August 24.

The mirror, 11 centimeters in diameter and a mere 0.3 cm thick, has the Chinese characters "Wei Zhi San Gong," translated as "among top ranking officials," inscribed on the back.

John Edwards repeatedly lied during his Presidential campaign about an extramarital affair with a novice filmmaker, the former Senator admitted to ABC News today.

In an interview for broadcast tonight on Nightline, Edwards told ABC News correspondent Bob Woodruff he did have an affair with 44-year old Rielle Hunter, but said that he loved only his wife, Elizabeth.

"Two years ago I made a very serious mistake," Edwards said, blaming the prominence of being a vice presidential candidate. "All of which fed a self-focus, an egotism, a narcissism that leads you to believe that you can do whatever you want," he said.

Edwards also denied he was the father of Hunter's baby girl, Frances Quinn, although the one-time Democratic Presidential candidate said he has not taken a paternity test

Does Obama have the sort of adviser a candidate most needs -- someone sufficiently unenthralled to tell him when he has worked one pedal on the organ too much? If so, Obama should be told: Enough, already, with the we-are-who-we-have-been-waiting-for rhetorical cotton candy that elevates narcissism to a political philosophy.

And no more locutions such as "citizen of the world" and "global citizenship." If they meant anything in Berlin, they meant that Obama wanted Berliners to know that he is proudly cosmopolitan. Cosmopolitanism is not, however, a political asset for American presidential candidates. NICE guys knew it, now two studies have confirmed it: bad boys get the most girls. The finding may help explain why a nasty suite of antisocial personality traits known as the "dark triad" persists in the human population, despite their potentially grave cultural costs.

The traits are the self-obsession of narcissism; the impulsive, thrill-seeking and callous behaviour of psychopaths; and the deceitful and exploitative nature of Machiavellianism. At their extreme, these traits would be highly detrimental for life in traditional human societies. People with these personalities risk being shunned by others and shut out of relationships, leaving them without a mate, hungry and vulnerable to predators.

But being just slightly evil could have an upside: a prolific sex life, says Peter Jonason at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces. "We have some evidence that the three traits are really the same thing and may represent a successful evolutionary strategy."

BAD boys really do get the girls, according to new research.

This week's New Scientist says two studies in the US have found that men with antisocial personality traits are more likely to have a prolific sex life.

The so-called 'dark triad' traits include impulsiveness, narcissism, thrill-seeking and deceitfulness, it says.

One of the studies, a survey of 35,000 people in 57 countries, found a clear link between dark triad traits and the reproductive success of males.

"It is universal across cultures for high dark triad scorers to be more active in short-term mating,'' David Schmitt, of Bradley University in the US, told New Scientist.

"They are more likely to try and poach other people's partners for a brief affair.''

Another study found that males who scored higher in the dark triad personality traits had a greater number of partners and a desire for short relationships.

clipper's remarks: Another freak show hits TV. Oprah has normalized the Jerry Springer show. And I thought Freaks and Geeks was canceled from prime time TV. I guess I was wrong. This poor woman, man, trans gender, transsexual, mentally disturbed person needs help not applause. Our society has lots its moorings if this abnormal behavior is considered the new norm. God help us all.

I really feel badly for Tracy, who was born a girl and apparently lost her way somewhere in her formative years. We need to pray for this lost soul who apparently hates herself so much that she was willing to mutilate herself in an attempt to find love she so desperately craves.

What does society do? They exploit these poor souls for personal gain and aggrandizement. And to think that millions of people watch the "O" show. "O MY" might be more appropriate.

The media seems bizarrely obsessed with the story of "Thomas Beatie," aka Tracy Lagondino. Beatie, a woman who legally changed her sex to "male," retained all of her internal female organs at the same time she took testosterone, grew a beard and had breast removal surgery. She then "married" her lesbian partner, Nancy. Nancy proceeded to artificially inseminate her "husband." And so the press has announced that Thomas/Tracy (Thracy, let's call her) is the world's first "pregnant man."

If Thracy is a man, then so is Rosie O'Donnell. Thracy has two X chromosomes, a fully functioning set of female genitalia, and a uterus

Though Thracy's decision to artificially inseminate herself is the height of narcissism, it is hardly a medical anomaly.

Testosterone doesn't make a woman a man. And a bearded pregnant woman doesn't make wrong right, no matter what the media says.

You have a very strong self concept--OMG. It made me laugh and humor in a relationship is a good thing. However, I like someone with a great deal of confidence, as long as it is not borderline narcissism. I agree you are attractive. I just updated my profile with my picture and more info about me. I tend to share a little more about who I am and my interests. We are both sexual mavericks so we share that in common---oh, the fun that could be.
SO I am just trying out this site, so I hope to hear from you soon if you are interested. I think a night with you would be simply fascinating just to be in your company.
