The University offers club, intramural, and varsity sports. Its 19 varsity sports teams compete in the Southeastern Conference and are known as the Gamecocks. The Gamecocks have won six national team championships: 2002 NCAA championship in women's track & field, 2005 & 2007 National Championship in women's equestrian, and 2005-2007 Hunt Seat National Championships in women's equestrian. Also, the men's and women's track & field teams have produced many NCAA individual champions, world championship medalists, and Olympic medalists. The men's baseball and basketball teams have also produced Olympic medalists. Other significant accomplishments include: 2005 NCAA runner-up in women's track & field; NCAA runner-up three times in baseball (2002, 1977, 1975); 1993 NCAA runner-up in men's soccer; and 2005 & 2006 NIT championships in men's basketball. Dogs suffering from lymphoma will be able to receive the same type of medical treatment as their human counterparts, as North Carolina State University becomes the first university in the nation to offer canine bone marrow transplants in a clinical setting.

Dr. Steven Suter, assistant professor of oncology in NC State's College of Veterinary Medicine, received three leukophoresis machines donated by the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. Leukophoresis machines are designed to harvest healthy stem cells from cancer patients. The machines are used in conjunction with drug therapy to harvest stem cells that have left the patient's bone marrow and entered the bloodstream. The harvested cancer-free cells are then reintroduced into the patient after total body radiation is used to kill residual cancer cells left in the body. This treatment is called peripheral blood stem cell transplantation.

"If I had known about this earlier, I'm sure we could have packed this room with people opposed to Blackwater," he said. "I think the public has a right to know, and zoning is really a way for us to protect our land."

"It will in no way be hazardous or detrimental to the surrounding properties," promised Blackwater employee Eric Davis.

"A training facility is being used on agricultural land, and it seems kind of strange to me," said Hippie, Democratic candidate for the county board. "Either the zoning should be changed, or the use should be stopped."

Kenny drew parallels between the modus operandi of Blackwater in Jo Daviess County, and the early stages of training center development in Camden County in North Carolina and San Diego County in California.

"What happened in Camden County, what happened in California can also happen here," Kenny argued. "Small steps. It doesn't even have to be in their name. Right now they're leasing the property."

Two students photographed for 'Girls of the SEC' edition represent USC in pictorial

For USC students, Playboy models actually are the girls next door.

Third-year exercise science student Jayme Knightly and third-year psychology student Brooke Taylor, who appeared in the "Girls of the SEC" pictorial in the October edition of Playboy magazine, appeared at an autograph session at Capitol City Newsstand on Main Street in Columbia Friday afternoon.

"My parents still don't know, but if they find out, they find out," she said.

Knightly didn't tell anyone about posing for Playboy until she knew her picture would make it in the magazine, but since she has, she said the reaction has been overwhelmingly positive.

Though Taylor had modeled before, neither of the two girls plan on making modeling a career. Knightly plans on going to medical school, but said if an opportunity to model again came up, "I wouldn't say no."

The victim was his daughter Bridget, found by Cindy McCain at Mother Teresa's orphanage in Bangladesh, brought to the U.S. for medical treatment and adopted. In the South Carolina primary, anonymous McCain opponents used a telephone "push poll" across the state, asking voters what they thought of McCain's "illegitimate" black child. McCain lost South Carolina, and the Republican nomination.

Former officials of Sen. John McCain's 2000 campaign expressed shock and disbelief Monday to learn than the GOP presidential nominee had hired South Carolina political consultant Tucker Eskew.

Eskew, along with Warren Tompkins and Neal Rhodes, were key members of then-Gov. George W. Bush's South Carolina team during the 2000 primaries. McCain and his team long held Bush, Tompkins, Rhodes and Eskew responsible for the various smears against McCain and his family in the Palmetto state during that contentious contest.

The tactics used against McCain by Bush and his allies in South Carolina left a deep scar on both McCain and his wife Cindy.

Eight years later, with a tough fight of his own, McCain has turned to one of the same men.

Balloonist Survives 9,000-Foot Fall at South Carolina Festival

ANDERSON, S.C. — Authorities say a Michigan man survived after his hot air balloon plunged thousands of feet at a South Carolina festival because the basket caught a tree limb 10 feet before it hit the ground.

Great Southeast Balloon Fest officials say pilot Chuck Walz, of Munith, Mich., broke his leg and pelvis Sunday morning, but has undergone surgery and his recovery is promising.

Anderson Fire Chief Jack Abraham says Walz's balloon may have been 9,000 feet in the air when it deflated.

Abraham says the balloon's basket was skewered by a tree branch 10 feet from ground, stopping its fall. Walz then fell from the basket to the ground. He was conscious when rescuers arrived.

Federal aviation officials are investigating the incident.

HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. - A former student was sentenced to up to 33 years in prison Tuesday for plowing his sport utility vehicle into a crowd at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in a self-professed bid to avenge Muslim deaths overseas.

Mohammed Taheri-Azar, 25, pleaded guilty earlier this month to nine counts of attempted murder for the March 2006 attack at a popular outdoor gathering spot known as The Pit.

Former history professor Michael Allsep, whose wrist and tailbone were broken, said he feared for his life.

"This man not only tried to kill me and my students, he tried to kill the best of our future. He failed only through poor execution," Allsep wrote in a statement read by his mother.

Afterward, he waited in his vehicle for police for about 15 minutes and told them he was the man they were looking for. Police found a letter in his apartment that he had written them because he thought he would be killed during the attack.
