In this simple chronicle, there is something quite mysterious: Why did the Georgians choose to invade South Ossetia on Thursday night? There had been a great deal of shelling by the South Ossetians of Georgian villages for the previous three nights, but while possibly more intense than usual, artillery exchanges were routine. The Georgians might not have fought well, but they committed fairly substantial forces that must have taken at the very least several days to deploy and supply. Georgia’s move was deliberate.

The United States is Georgia’s closest ally. It maintained about 130 military advisers in Georgia, along with civilian advisers, contractors involved in all aspects of the Georgian government and people doing business in Georgia. It is inconceivable that the Americans were unaware of Georgia’s mobilization and intentions.

Web Security Words Help Digitize Old Books

People who use the Internet

are often unknowingly helping to digitize vast libraries of old books and newspapers.

That's because more than 40,000 Web sites — including popular ones such as Ticketmaster, Facebook and Craigslist — are using a new kind of security program called reCAPTCHA.

CAPTCHA, will allow people to access a Web site only if they prove they are human — and not a spammer's computer — by typing in a sequence of letters

The trouble is, each time you type in one of these garbled words, you're also wasting time.

A human being has to look at those words and decipher them. It occurred to von Ahn that he could link this kind of activity to security devices used on the Internet. Instead of asking people to prove they're human by copying random sequences of distorted letters and numbers, he could ask them to decipher mystery words from scanned books and newspapers.

THE full moon may cause people to suffer symptoms similar to those of a stroke, experts believe.

The number of people treated for mystery numbness and co-ordination loss rises significantly on full-moon nights – like tonight.

And although there is no permanent damage, the symptoms can at first seem like those of a stroke.

Dr Terry Quinn, of the University of Glasgow Medical School, said: “We found a significant increase in presentations to a stroke unit with medically unexplained symptoms during the full moon.”

The researchers analysed all admissions to Glasgow’s Western Infirmary stroke unit between January 1993 and September 2006. Of more than 7,200 patients, 129 were found to have medically unexplained stroke symptoms, or MUSS.

Despite intensive tests, doctors could not explain these symptoms. But when researchers matched up MUSS with lunar patterns, they found they peaked on full-moon nights. Most patients were women and under 65.

Research Proves Beer Goggle Effect is Real

According to a new study, drinking alcohol changes our perceptions and makes people appear more attractive.

Researchers in England had 84 randomly selected heterosexual college students drink a mystery beverage that either contained enough alcohol to make them tipsy or no alcohol at all. They then had the students look at pictures of faces, and found that those who had consumed the alcohol rated the faces as being more attractive than those in the control group.

Surprisingly, the beer goggle effect wasn't just limited to the opposite sex. The students who imbibed also rated the faces from their own sex more attractive.

Now that that's been settled, it's time for science to tackle the "beer before liquor never been sicker" mantra, and the mystery of the guy who always disappears when it's his turn to buy a round.

Madrid, Aug 15, 2008 / 08:44 am (CNA).- Spanish priest Father Francisco Javier Ruiz said this week that the role the Church has in today’s world is to bring to it the message of the Gospel, “but what she cannot do is betray the message in order adapt it to society.”

“The truth is always the truth. There are some things that cannot change, because they are things man has received—revealed by God—in Jesus Christ,” and therefore “history and the present moment must adapt to the truth and not vice versa,” the priest said during an interview for the website Laverdad.es.

He concluded by saying that it is not true that young people have lost their faith. “There are more young people in the Church now than ever. Young people are falling in love with Jesus Christ and encountering the mystery of the Cross, in order to confront suffering. Jesus saves them from the death of sin,” he said.

The Russian invasion of Georgia has not changed the balance of power in Eurasia. It simply announced that the balance of power had already shifted. The United States has been absorbed in its wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as potential conflict with Iran and a destabilizing situation in Pakistan. It has no strategic ground forces in reserve and is in no position to intervene on the Russian periphery. This, as we have argued, has opened a window of opportunity for the Russians to reassert their influence in the former Soviet sphere.
