Tiger Temple, or Wat Pha Luang Ta Bua, is a Buddhist temple in Western Thailand which keeps numerous animals, among them several tame tigers that walk around freely once a day and can be petted by tourists.

The Theravada Buddhist temple is located in the Saiyok district of Thailand's Kanchanaburi province, not far from the border with Myanmar, some 38 km north-west of Kanchanaburi along the 323 highway. It was founded in 1994 as a forest temple and sanctuary for numerous wild animals. In 1995 it received the Golden Jubilee Buddha Image, made of 80 kilograms of gold.

They are washed and handled by Thai staff and the younger tigers by the volunteers. Once a day they are led on leashes to a nearby quarry. Originally they would roam around freely in this area but now, with the increase in tourists and the amount of tigers who sit in the canyon, will always be chained.

But even if we know a bit more (that the number of Chinese is around 1.32 billion, which is just under 20% of all humans alive today), that figure is still too big to mean much beyond that China is ‘number one’ (2). This map compares the population of China’s provinces (plus the ‘renegade province’ of Taiwan), autonomous regions and municipalities with those of whole countries, and thus helps shed some light on that issue.

BERLIN, Sept 23 (Reuters) - Corruption in poor countries has created a humanitarian disaster which threatens to derail the global fight against poverty, Transparency International said.

Releasing its annual Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) on Tuesday, the anti-corruption watchdog said donor countries should address the problem by carefully targeting aid.

The index ranks 180 countries according to perceived levels of public sector corruption. The CPI scores countries on a zero to 10 scale, with zero indicating high levels of corruption and 10, low levels.

For the second year running, Somalia and Myanmar received the poorest marks, each scoring 1.4, just below Iraq on 1.5.

Denmark defended its ranking as the world's least corrupt nation, alongside Sweden and New Zealand. All scored 9.3.

Transparency International (TI) chair Huguette Labelle called the high levels of corruption in low-income countries a "humanitarian disaster".

United Nations Reform: Fact or Fiction?

clipper's remarks: The United Nations promised international cooperation on eliminating the major threats to peace and security and the most serious impediments to the protection of human rights and human dignity. Sixty years after the UN officially came into existence, 24 October 1945, the trail is one of broken promises. While important successes have marked some of its paths, the international machine has been hijacked and manipulated to subvert the very causes it was intended to promote.

A number of factors have forced UN reform to move much higher up on the global agenda than ever before: the exposure of the billion-dollar UN-run Oil-for-food scam, peacekeeper-rapists, and paralysis in the face of genocide in Sudan.However, in an environment where there is little, if any, consensus on the most critical issues of our time, the real game is one of finger-pointing. Undoubtedly, the "blame America first" will continue.

UN loses millions in exchange rate blunder

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - The top U.N. humanitarian affairs official said on Monday the world body had suffered "significant" losses while delivering cyclone aid to Myanmar due to a distorted official exchange rate.

Earlier this month, the United Nations issued an appeal for more than $300 million in extra aid to cope with the effects of Cyclone Nargis that struck the Irrawaddy Delta region in early May, leaving around 140,000 people dead or missing.

The loss comes from a complicated system whereby the United Nations uses foreign exchange certificates with a nominal value of $1 each that are then exchanged for the local currency, the kyat, at a rate set by Myanmar's military government.

Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs John Holmes told reporters the United Nations has lost about $10 million in currency exchanges so far as it pays for a variety of goods and services in Myanmar.

The last time I saw Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, general secretary of Myanmar's National League for Democracy (N.L.D.), was in 1996.

Aung San Suu Kyi was then under house arrest, but this did not stop her from addressing a crowd of thousands who came regularly to hear her "voice of hope" every Saturday outside her house on University Avenue in Yangoon, formerly Rangoon.

Aung San Suu Kyi looked at ease as she spoke to a crowd that obviously adored her. It was then that I decided to learn more about the N.L.D. and why the ruling junta, which overwhelmingly lost the democratic vote to the Aung San Suu Kyi-led N.L.D. in 1990, had not respected the voice of the people.

Indian state facing famine after rat plague: report

A million people in northeastern India face famine after rats destroyed most of the rice crop in their state, the International Rice Research Institute has said.

The 2007 infestation spread over to the border areas of Bangladesh and Myanmar in early 2008, "increasing fears of widespread food shortages," the Philippines-based institute said.

"Aid agencies have reported that many people have been forced onto a diet of wild roots, yam and sweet potatoes," the institute said in its quarterly magazine "Rice Today".

IRRI said the rat population boomed after the flowering of a native species of bamboo, an event that occurs only once every 50 years.
