Taliban in Pakistan persecute Pushtun Artists

Gulzar Alam's songs filled Peshawar's air not long ago, when the city was a different place with music, theater and even a bazaar for musicians and artists.

Dabgari Bazaar was famous for its artists and musicians. But the artists and musicians have gone and this whole area has been commercialized.

It is to this reality that Pushtu singer Gulzar Alam has returned to after years in self imposed exile in Balochistan -- only because the liberal Awami National Party has formed the government. (Watch)

"Then a time came in our province that culture, arts and music were banned. Tape recorders were forcibly removed from people's private cars and public transport. And there was a ban on musical functions. And that time we suffered a lot, our whole community of artists just fled the country."

For now, Gulzar keeps the music only to himself. His neighbours have asked him not to gather musicians around so the Taliban are not provoked into punishing the entire neighbourhood.

A lifelong, talented musician, Justin Dillon skirted the fringes of success without making it "big." Despite having always been a conscious student of world affairs, filmmaking was never in his blood – or at least so he thought. Yet a 2003 show in Russia opened his eyes to the globe’s most overlooked social issue: human slavery, which, as revealed by his subsequent documentary debut, is more prevalent now than ever.

Due for national release on Oct. 10, "Call + Response" emotionally provokes its audience into action. Perhaps, too, Dillon’s creative, personal journey which brought politicians, musicians, academics and film stars together and included a global trek into slavery’s crannies, represents the ascendancy of one man from a solitary decrier of injustice into an agent of positive change.

So if we, collectively with power and money, demand slave-free products or services, we can effect change.

AUSTIN -- In a dark blue pin-striped suit, crisp white dress shirt, snug red tie and shiny brown dress shoes, El Paso Mayor John Cook sure didn't look like any folk singer.

But he slung one knee over the other, braced his guitar and belted out a couple songs Wednesday night in Austin just as he has in five other cities across the state, playing with a variety of musicians promoting abolition of the death penalty in Texas.

Musical training enhances integration of the senses

It also shows that sensorimotor and auditory training cause more changes in the auditory cortex than auditory training alone. This phenomemon, called cross-modal plasticity, has been investigated only rarely. In 2003, the same group showed that professional trumput players have enhanced interactions between the auditory cortex and the regions of the somatosensory cortex devoted to the lip. The new study therefore provides another demonstration that the sensorimotor and auditory cortices are connected to each other.

Learning to play a musical instrument is known to involve both structural and functional changes in the brain.

Studies published in recent years have established, for example, that professional keyboard players have increased gray matter volume in motor, auditory and visual parts of the brain, and that violinists have a larger somatosensory cortical representation of the left hand than do non-musicians.

Musical training is a complex process involving simultaneously perceiving the inputs from the senses of hearing, sight and touch, as well as co-ordinating these with the outputs of the motor system.

It therefore provides neuroscientists with a good model to study the effects of neural plasticity in different sensory systems.

A German group investigating this phenomenon now shows that piano training involving playing musical sequences leads to more reorganizational changes in the brain than does training involving listening alone.

There must be a way to get labels fed to the masses - just deal with the Public & Business Relations!

If Producers are fearful of having their media ripped, then convert these into something which is unreadable if ripped on a client’s desktop or player - maybe sometime similar to what Radio Blog Club is doing - it really isn’t difficult to combat piracy you know… there is such a thing as hiring application developers that will contain media and make them unreadable but streamable.

It is not that difficult to promote the tunes, and get fans ravving about the latest Who’s Who in the industry.

Here’s yet another tiresome “scientific” study on what’s wrong with conservatives. Why do we keep getting these kind of things? Because social scientists tend to be liberals.

Look at the occupations that tend to be dominated by liberals: Social scientists, college professors, actors, musicians, artists. What’s similar between them all? They don’t produce anything essential. If you ran the country like a company and because of budget cutbacks you had to start laying people off, all the jobs liberals do would be the first to go. It’s nice to have actors and musicians, but we can live without them.

Liberals are an excess of civilization. You have to reach a certain level of society where useless people no longer starve to death before liberals can exist. But liberals can’t exist on their own. They need conservatives to do all the useful things needed for actual survival. Liberals need conservatives, but not the other way around.

Two Arrested in Parking Lot #4 Alongside Santa Cruz Farmer's Market

On September 17th, Jack and Wes were arrested at a gathering in Parking Lot #4 alongside the Santa Cruz Farmer's Market. According to reports published on Santa Cruz Indymedia, police initially went after and arrested Jack, a Food Not Bombs volunteer. Some people followed the police while drumming and demanding that Jack be released. Police reacted by arresting Wes, a drummer with Santa Cruz Trash Orchestra.

Numerous police were called to the scene, but they quickly left after displaying batons and a riot control gun. The final scene had Parking Lot #4 filled with musicians drumming, children dancing, and Food Not Bombs feeding.

New royalty agreement leaves Internet radio out in the cold

This afternoon, the Digital Media Association announced a new agreement with organizations that represent musicians and songwriters that will provide a streamlined licensing procedure for many models of digital music distribution. The new agreement doesn't apply to "download to own" music, but will apply to streaming services, including subscription and ad-supported music (think Last.fm and SpiralFrog). The agreement has been submitted to the Copyright Royalty Judges for approval.

Although Internet radio is left out of this agreement and there are clearly going to be further legal tussles among the parties involved, the deal could be significant in terms of providing new ventures with a picture of the sort of business expenses they need to be planning for, and will provide a level playing field for both new and established ventures. As long as some of the activities are well defined by the language of the agreement, it may let them plan for having reduced legal fees.
