clipper's remarks: The parents of a schoolby charged with kipping a fellow pupil said that he was "into satanism", as did some newspaper headlines.

The trouble is, these allegations are tossed about, but never followed up. There were similar reports a few months ago in the Eastern Cape, but we have heard no more.

The parents of Morne Harmse, accused of stabbing a fellow pupil to death with a sword, in their first public statement since the incident, said their son was a victim of bullying.

The Harmses said "to our regret, it seems like he had started experimenting with Satanism".

The mask he wore is said to be similar to masks worn by heavy metal band Slipknot which has been accused of producing Satanic music.

Police: Central shooting not random; student suspect being questioned

A Central High School student died this morning after being shot in the school cafeteria by another student, according to Knoxville police.

It was not a random shooting, he said.

John Lennon's killer gives new details of shooting

He has spent almost 28 years in Attica prison in New York.

Ono, who has previously written to the parole board opposing Chapman's release, did not offer any testimony at his fifth and latest and fifth parole hearing on August 12.

Chapman said he had a job offer on a farm in upstate New York. However his request for parole was rejected "due to concern for the public safety and welfare".

His next hearing will be in August 2010.

According to a newly released transcript of a parole hearing earlier this month, Mark David Chapman, 53, said contrary to reports in the media, he did not call Lennon's name before shooting him.

"I don't recall saying, 'Mr. Lennon'," he said.

"I think that was something the press elaborated on. That didn't happen. He didn't turn. I shot him in the back."

"I just saw his face and it seemed like it all came together, the solution to my problem of being confused and feeling like a nobody," he said, according to a newly released transcript.

"And I said, 'Wouldn't it be something if I killed this individual? I would become famous, I would be something other than a nobody'. And that was my reasoning at the time.

"I perceived him at the time, and wrongly judged him to be a phony. Here he is at this ritzy building and he had been singing of love and other things at that time; it angered me."

ILIGAN, Philippines (AFP) - - Troops on Tuesday stepped up a manhunt for Muslim separatist rebels after a murderous rampage in the southern Philippines left 38 people dead and threw peace negotiations into chaos.

Hundreds of Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) rebels attacked towns in Lanao del Norte and Sarangani provinces Monday, looting businesses, burning houses and holding dozens of hostages.

The near-simultaneous raids began at dawn, triggering intense gunbattles in the mostly Christian towns of Kolambugan and Kauswagan that raged until noon.

Villagers were trickling back into their devastated communities Tuesday, only to find debris where their houses once stood.

The death toll now stands at 38, including three soldiers, while dozens of others were injured and nearly 10,000 displaced by the fighting.

Drum musician killed after receiving frequent threats from militants

UNKNOWN militants have killed a drum musician in Logar province, one of the victim’s family said.

Hazrad Din, a 50-year-old drum player, had played drums at celebrations in the province’s Baraki Barak district for the last 30 years.

Ziaul Din, his uncle, said Hazrad Din was killed by two men riding a motorcycle while leaving a marriage party in the Rustam Khel district of the province on Saturday.

The musician had received frequent threats from the Taliban over the last year and was warned not to play at wedding parties, the uncle said.

The Taliban have failed to comment on the murder.

The governor of Baraki Barak district, Yasin Lodin, said they have launched an investigation into the killing.

PESHAWAR, Pakistan, Aug 19 (Reuters) - A suspected suicide bomber killed 23 people in the compound of a hospital in northwest Pakistan on Tuesday as members of a religious minority were holding a protest, police said.

Violence in northwest Pakistan is a major test for the coalition government led by the party of slain former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, especially after the resignation of former army chief Pervez Musharraf as president on Monday.

The bomb went off outside a hospital in Dera Ismail Khan, 280 km (175 miles) southwest of Islamabad, as Shi'ite Muslims were protesting against the killing of a leader. Gunmen shot the leader earlier and his body had been taken to the hospital.

North West Frontier Province police chief Naveed Malik Khan said 23 people had been killed in the blast, and up to 20 wounded. He said Sunni Muslim militants were believed responsible.

Most of the dead were protesters, a city official said.

They would naturally have seen him as a flight risk After all James Fayed is the estranged husband of Pamela Fayed who was stabbed to death in a Century City parking garage on July 28th.

No one has been charged in relation to that murder yet. There are reports Pamela Fayed's slaying happened straight after leaving a meeting with her husband and his attorneys. I've also read in some news items that she was helping the FBI in some way prior to her murder.

The federal trial is scheduled to start some time in Sept 08

It ought not to be necessary to point out the differences between Saddam Hussein's Iraq and Mr Saakashvili's Georgia, but for those blinded by moral relativism, here goes - Georgia did not invade its neighbours or use chemical weapons on their people. Georgia did not torture and murder hundreds of thousands of its own citizens. Georgia did not defy international demands for a decade and ignore 18 UN Security Council resolutions to come clean about its weapons programmes.

And unlike Iraq under Saddam, Georgia is led by a democratically elected president who has pushed this once dank backwater of the Soviet Union, birthplace of Stalin and Beria, towards liberal democracy and international engagement.

Unlike Serbia, Georgia has not been conducting a campaign of “ethnic cleansing” against the people of these provinces

The EU today seems to have adapted that slogan to fit its own desired global role - the important thing is taking part and not winning.

“Heavenly Creatures” or “Peter Jackson before Lord Of The Rings”.

This little gem of a movie is really something else. Released in 1994, it was played on TV every single year for ten years when I was living in New Zealand. For good reason too. The plot focuses on a real life murder case that happened in 1954’s Christchurch, New Zealand, incidentally, where I lived while in the country. The two characters, Pauline Parker and Juliet Hulme (played by Melanie Lynskey of “Ever After” and Kate Winslet of “Titanic” respectively) get into some pretty trippy scenarios without the use of any drugz, which is pretty amazing stuff considering all the parallel hallucinations they get into, and end up plotting to kill Pauline’s mother (which they do), so the both of them can be together…forever (which they don’t).

ILORIN, Nigeria, August 14 (Compass Direct News) – Blaming the death of their leader on Christian prayers, an Islamist group that launched a hate campaign in response to an evangelistic event in 2004 is reportedly attacking Christians in this Kwara state capital with renewed virulence, area Christians said.

At least three Christians have died and several others have been injured in attacks with machetes and other weapons since June, clergymen said. They said the attacks began after the death in May of Dr. Ali Olukade, head of a local group of Islamists called Tibliq, possibly patterned after the worldwide Tablighi Jamaat missionary movement.

5 Women Buried Alive for Wanting to Marry 'by Choice'

The Asian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) has received information from a remote area of Balochistan province, that five women were buried alive, allegedly by the younger brother of Mr. Sadiq Umrani, the provincial minister and a prominent leader of the Pakistan People's Party, the ruling party. However, police have still not arrested the perpetrators after one month of the incident.

As the news of their plans leaked out, Mr. Abdul Sattar Umrani, a brother of the minister, came with more than six persons and abducted them at gun points.

After reaching the deserted area of Nau Abadi, Abdul Sattar Umrani and his six companions took the three younger women out of the jeep and beat them before allegedly opening fire with their guns. The girls were seriously injured but were still alive at that moment. Sattar Umrani and his accomplices hurled them into a wide ditch and covered them with earth and stones.

Tehran (AsiaNews) - The life of Shirin Ebadi, Nobel peace prize winner in 2003, is in danger. Ebadi has been fearless in denouncing the oppression of human rights in her country. The alarm has been raised by Rooz, a website for Iranian exiles, which deduces it from the "charge" made a few days ago by the official news agency IRNA, saying that Ebadi and her daughter, a student at McGill University in Canada, have become members of the Bahai religion. The Bahai are considered a heretical Islamic group, and are persecuted.

The accusation, according to Rooz, is a sham set up to disguise the intention of having the woman killed, or at least of frightening her to the point of making her stop her activities in favor of human rights, or leave the country.

Tens of thousands of displaced Filipinos have returned to their homes, or what is left of them, after fierce fighting broke out between government soldiers and Muslim separatists in the south of the country earlier this week. The government says at least 10,000 houses were destroyed in North Cotabato province, which forced huge numbers of poor farmers to return to refugee camps.

Government soldiers attacked positions held by Moro Islamic Liberation Front rebels holed up in about 15 Christian villages in North Cotabato. Dozens of people were reportedly killed in the fighting and around 160,000 people fled their homes and farms to escape the bloodshed.
