Rape victim's 'gunpowder in eyes' horror

A rapist who poured gunpowder in his victim's eyes and set it alight could be jailed for up to 25 years, a court has heard.

The 26-year-old victim, who cannot be named, was raped in front of her four-year-old son before she was tied up and the gunpowder set alight.

Dennis robbed the woman at knife point and threatened to hurt her son, telling her, "Maybe I should take you for a drive but I guarantee that if I take you for a drive that it will be an all night thing because I have some friends in a car and they aren't as nice as me. Would you like a big gang bang?"

He then raped her as her son watched, tied her hands and feet with rope, poured gunpowder into her eyes and lit it with a cigarette lighter.

"You know you shouldn't cry 'cos it turns me on,'' he told the four-year-old as he masturbated in front of him.

"I am going to lie on top of mummy and protect her.''

Judge Penelope Hock today described the use of gunpowder as a "completely gratuitous act which you might describe as torture''.

Archeologists working at Peru's Huaca Pucllana ruins pulled a mummy from a tomb on Tuesday, thought to be from the ancient Wari culture that flourished before the Incas. Besides the female mummy, the tomb contained the remains of two other adults and a child. It is the first intact Wari burial site discovered at Huaca Pucllana in the capital Lima, and researchers believe it dates from about 700 AD.

They exposed her face, revealing two big, bright blue orbs in her eye sockets. They extracted the other adult mummies, which were also whole, earlier in the week.

The Wari people lived and ruled in what is now Peru for some 500 years, between 600 AD and 1100 AD. Their capital was near modern-day Ayacucho, in the Andes, but they traveled widely and are known for their extensive network of roads. Flores said about 30 tombs have been found at Huaca Pucllana, surrounded by Lima's busy streets.

Piercing blue eyes undimmed by the passing of 1,300 years, this is the Lady of the Mask – a mummy whose discovery could reveal the secrets of a lost culture.

She was found by archaeologists excavating a pyramid in Peru’s capital city Lima,
alongside two other adult mummies and the sacrificial remains of a child.

It is the first time a tomb from the region’s Wari culture has been discovered intact and gives historians the chance to pin down exactly how the pre-Incas buried their dead.

The mummy - assumed to be a noblewoman because of the ornate mask - was found in a crouching position surrounded by ceramics and textiles associated with female weavers.

Earlier in the week, workers at the Huaca Pucllana site removed two adult mummies found lying near the lady of the mask.

Archaeologists have been excavating the area for three years and while they found plenty of artefacts, the 30 other tombs uncovered had been looted.

When in good condition, Wari tombs can be identified by the ceramic and textile offerings placed around the dead.

Small children were often sacrificed and it is common to find their bodies alongside adult ones. The child discovered with the adult mummies at Huaca Pucllana was likely sacrificed.

The discovery at Huaca Pucllana confirms the Wari people buried their dead in what is now Lima and offers a more complete picture of how burials were done

First Greek Mummy Once Led Privileged Life

Aug. 8, 2008 -- The first evidence of artificial mummification in ancient Greece lies in a lead coffin at the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki, according to a Swiss-Greek research team.

Wrapped in bandages and covered with a gold-embroidered purple silk cloth, the woman lay on a wooden pallet.

The analysis of the mummified remains showed the presence of various substances including myrrh, fats and resins.

"The embalming technology was quite sophisticated," said study co-leader Frank Röhli, head of the Swiss Mummy Project. "We found different chemical components, mostly originating from oils. There were also spices. It looks like the embalming technique was partially taken over from the Egyptians."

"This is the first time that such substances were identified in material from this specific geographical and temporal setting," the researchers concluded.

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egyptian scientists are doing DNA tests on stillborn children found in the tomb of the Pharaoh Tutankhamun in the hope of identifying their mother and grandmother, who may be the powerful queen Nefertiti, Egypt's chief archaeologist said on Wednesday.

British archaeologist Howard Carter found the mummified fetuses when he discovered Tutankhamun's tomb in 1922. Archaeologists assume they are the children of the teenage pharaoh but their mother has not been identified.

Many scholars believe their mother to be Ankhesenamun, the boy king's only known wife. Ankhesenamun is the daughter of Nefertiti, renowned for her beauty.

"For the first time we will be able to identify the family of King Tut," Zahi Hawass, the head of Egypt's Supreme Council for Antiquities, told Reuters. "This should allow us for the first time to discover the mummy of Nefertiti."

Ankhesenamun is the daughter of Nefertiti, renowned for her beauty.

"This should allow us for the first time to discover the mummy of Nefertiti."

Nefertiti had six daughters with the Pharoah Akhenaten, who abandoned traditional gods in favour of monotheism during his rule from about 1350 to 1334 BC.

The queen's mummy has never been identified.
