File Factory: 100GB of free storage with a 300MB file limit. Downer could be the slow speeds.

Mozy: 2GB of free storage but with a handy Windows client that makes uploading a cinch.

Dropbox: For smaller needs – offers 2GB of free storage with neat file syncing features.

- Docs: For your documents, why go any further than the trio of Google Docs, Office Live and Zoho.

- Tunes: For music, MP3Tunes, File Factory and Deezer sound really cool.

- Vids: For videos, you can give YouTube, Vimeo and Viddler a shot.

The Gizmodo referred choices are aplenty and free. Just remember to do a full or a selective backup. It could be a safety net for a crash.

Yes, some of these websites do double over for file storage needs. You probably use them every day but never looked at them from this angle.

I can't imagine anyone would pay 10 cents to listen to a song under these onerous requirements, when for the equally low price of 99 cents they can download it -- or for free, they can pirate it.

A music experiment will soon begin with the ambitious attempt to reinvigorate people to buying music online. For just 10 cents you'll be able to select a song to add to your Music Locker to play whenever you like.

Over 5 million well known songs are browsable in a web layout. Songs are ranked by the number of listens they have received - similar to the strategy MP3.com invented 10 years ago. Each song can played one time in its entirety with the built in flash player. Subsequent plays are limited to 30 seconds. Next to every song is an "Add" button which for a single credit will add the tune to your personal collection. Credits cost 10 cents and each new customer gets 50 credits for free.

The songs are not downloadable so they are not useful for portable players or your mobile phone. There is also no ability to play the songs on Internet radio, game console and DVR devices (like Tivo) as you can with the Locker from MP3tunes. These 'web songs' are trapped in a tab of your browser.

Cloud computing is supposed to be the next big tech revolution. One of the basic ideas, for the uninitiated, is that all of your apps and files (docs, pictures, music) are stored online in a digital locker, and you can access them from anywhere, no matter what computer you're using, thus heralding the end of the localized desktop, Windows, etc. MP3Tunes provides a digital locker for backing up music files—it's not a covert file-sharing thing, you can't share a locker with someone, so it's really only for personal backup/place-shifting. The record label EMI says it's illegal and is suing them to turn over all the music stored by the site's users. More »

Joining the ranks of online music-library services like MP3tunes, MediaMaster lets you upload your entire AAC/MP3/WMA collection (DRM-free files only), then stream it to any PC, publish it on your web site or share it with others.

Though still in the early stages of development, the service looks spiffy and runs smoothly. It lets you build playlists, rate songs, and share your music using a slick-looking widget that you can embed on a personal site, MySpace page, etc. Songs can't actually be downloaded, however--they're always streamed. Streaming is limited to 64Kbps, which will no doubt be a deal-breaker for some. Also, my uploads didn't show album art, even though it was embedded within the files (which MediaMaster says is the requirement for album art display). Those wrinkles aside, this looks like a promising service. It's free for now, and there's currently no limit on uploading.

MP3tunes is now offering free unlimited storage and music streaming for all your tunes. The site previously gave away 1GB of storage to sync your music, and even "sideload" any tunes you find on the web with Firefox and IE plugins to save the tunes you find to your locker. Now you get unlimited space to upload, store, sync, and enjoy all your music from any computer anywhere. Their uploader seems to upload fairly well, and doesn't take much babysitting to get it to work either. The audio quality is worthy of listening, it is seriously not bad. I am somewhat of an audiophile, and this service is really rocking for me right now. If you have a lot of music, it can take a while to upload your tracks (so leave it uploading overnight at least), but man, it is worth it, to be able to listen to your music anywhere you want. The service boasts the ability to stream to mobile devices, but sadly I haven't tried that feature yet. If you have the opportunity, try it out and let me know what you think of it. You can even sync album art. Wicked. My ear drums are going to need a vacation after this.
