Keyboard shortcuts

This is a list of keyboard shortcuts in Mozilla Firefox. If you have enabled Emacs-style text editing shortcuts in GNOME, they will also work in Firefox. When an Emacs text editing shortcut conflicts with the default shortcuts (as occurs with Ctrl+K), the Emacs shortcut will take preference if focus is inside a textbox (which would include the location bar and search bar). In such cases you should use the alternate keyboard shortcut if one is listed below.

Congrats, citizens of Mozilla! Firefox population surpasses that of the United States

Over the past two months, Mozilla has been hoovering up new users with reckless abandon - nearly 4 million people per week. At 330 million, the projected number of Firefox users has actually outstripped the population of the United States (which is currently around 305 million).

There's a little numerical kung fu that Mozilla uses to calculate that figure, and while it might not be 100% accurate the bottom line is that there are a crapload of Firefox users out there. And all those little foxes keep chewing away at Internet Explorer's browser-share pie.

Mozilla Europe honcho Tristan Nitot was understandably enthusiastic about the recent growth. Fall typically means an uptick for Firefox. Nitot told ZDNet, "Usually it's a mixture of back-to-school and people getting new computers and installing the latest version. This boosts our numbers every year."

Firefox 3.6 Beta Available for Download Tomorrow, October 28

The wait for the first Beta build of Firefox 3.6 is over. Mozilla has confirmed officially that it will push Firefox 3.6 out of Alpha and into Beta tomorrow, October 28th, 2009. In this regard, the successor of Firefox 3.5 advances to the next step in its evolution, although the beta stage should have come earlier according to the initial plans made public. In fact, Mozilla was aiming to deliver Firefox 3.6 Beta ahead of the general availability deadline of Windows 7, namely ahead of October 22nd. This obviously wasn’t the case.

Responsible for the delay of Firefox 3.6 Beta’s availability were a large number of blockers, bugs critical enough that they were capable of pushing back the release. Mozilla postponed Firefox 3.6 Beta until it managed to deal with all blockers, and with all the bugs now resolved, it gave the green light to the next development milestone for the next iteration of its open source browser.

Mozilla Labs, Mozilla’s innovation group, has developed a new open-source, experimental email and communication platform called Raindrop. Mozilla says that Raindrop was built to be focused on highlighting and breaking out personal conversations, making it easier for you to see all of your conversations in one client. It is designed to “bubble up” the important conversations from your messages

that in the future iterations the platform should include all types of messaging, including IM, Facebook, FriendFeed, YouTube and basically, any communication with an open API. And according to the site, content with in communications, such as links from YouTube or Flickr should be shown near or as part of the message, rather than in a separate tab. Ascher said that Raindrop doesn’t really aim to replace your Gmail account but add to it with an intelligent way to understand your communications. The application works on Firefox, Safari and Chrome.

Prism Extension Turns Any Site into a Separate Application

If you want to break out a webapp you use all day long into a separate window and desktop shortcut, Chrome makes it easy on you. Just click x and do y. The concept of separating webapps into their own application isn't new, though. At Mozilla, they've been cooking up Prism to do just that for quite some time. With Prism and the Prism for Firefox extension installed, just go to Tools -> Convert Website to Application to break a webapp into a separate window and application. Right now this extension is Windows only, but hey—so is Chrome.

Microsoft’s Firefox Plugin Blocked by Mozilla

As a security move in Firefox browser, Mozilla developers blocked a Firefox plugin that is made by Microsoft. The latter shipped the Firefox add-on being part of.Net software which was updated last February. This blockage cause outrage among Firefox users, complaining that the software sneaked into their systems without their approval and it’s much difficult to remove. Meanwhile Microsoft made a move by warning to Firefox users since they are most vulnerable to the “browse-and-get-owned attack” which is due to a bug in the .Net Framework Assistant add-on.
