During the 1930s, then 13 year old Harvey Lowe insured his hands for $150,000, which was a large sum of money at the time. Harvey was the Yo-Yo World Champion of that era, having been playing since he was 12. He is still yo-yoing and filling up his current account to this day.

If you read comics, you know which Anthony I mean. Very likely you’re already nodding in agreement. I’m talking about Anthony Caine, Elizabeth Patterson’s ex-boyfriend in For Better or For Worse.

I hate Anthony. I hate him more than I’ve ever hated a cartoon character

I’m far from the only one; Anthony supporters appear to be a tiny minority

most of them can’t muster much more enthusiasm than, “Hey, he’s not that bad.”

1. The “Beauty and the Geek” plot, already overused in comic strips.

2. The “childhood sweethearts reunited” plot, already overused in For Better or For Worse.

3. The plodding inevitability of the Liz-Anthony pairing.

4. His stupid moustache.

5. Everyone’s constantly talking him up.

6. He’s boring, whiny and pathetic.

7. He’s not a nice guy; he’s a Nice Guy[tm].

8. The whole storyline with the wife is fucking sexist.

9. Anthony represents the death of youthful dreams.

Daley Thompson tops gay Olympic icon poll

Perhaps it was the bushy moustache. Maybe it was the cheeky grin. Doubtless the athletic physique played a part, too. Whatever the reason, more than two decades after Daley Thompson offended the gay community, it seems he has finally been forgiven.

Few who watched the 1984 Olympics Games in Los Angeles could forget the incident that caused the damage. At a press conference that followed his victory in the decathlon, Thompson removed a tracksuit top to reveal a t-shirt emblazoned with the question: "Is the world's second-greatest athlete gay?".

So, it is perhaps a little surprising that Thompson has been voted the most desirable British male Olympian by a poll of 500 gay subscribers to the dating website Parship.

While travelling from Boston to San Francisco on the back of a motorbike two weeks ago (on my way to join New Scientist as an intern), I stopped at the Creation Museum in Petersburg, Kentucky. I felt a little guilty about supporting their agenda with my $22 ticket, but I learned an intriguing bit of information: Creationists have a subscription to New Scientist.

In fact, they've plastered past covers from the magazine all over one exhibit, "graffiti alley", a dark and eerie passageway representing the secular culture that so terrifies creationists. In the spirit of the exhibit, the dozen or so covers have all been mutilated and defaced. Their titles are warnings to visitors about the arrogance inherent in a non-religious world view: "Better than human," read two of the NS covers, with a moustache scrawled on the female face beneath. Headlines of nearby clips deal with topics like stems cells, the pill and gay teens.

Slainte, Ireland – the only country in the European Union which had enough moral spine and commitment to democracy to allow its people a vote on the Lisbon treaty. And of course its people voted “no” – as the people of Europe inevitably do when given the chance. Slainte once again, then.

We’re told that this is effectively the end of the treaty, but – call me a cynic – I am not convinced. It will re-emerge quite soon, camouflaged with a false beard and a moustache, bearing a different name. Within a few hours of the vote, the EU commissioner Margot Wallstrom, speaking on the BBC, described the result as being the consequence of – just get this – “inefficient decision making”. What a marvellous description of democracy.

all organisations, no matter how despised, feel they could do their work better with more power. And if that involves gulling the public, or bullying them, or ignoring the popular mandate, then so be it.

RAF pilot refuses US order to trim moustache

An RAF pilot has been ordered to trim his handlebar moustache by an American General who took offence at its length, but the British serviceman was not prepared to lose his whiskers without a fight.

The British airman, who sports a handlebar moustache in the proud tradition of the RAF, refused to comply when his superior officer in Afghanistan took offence at his facial hair.

Showing a bravado akin to that of Biggles, he fought back, eventually convincing the general that his generous whiskers were in line with regulations laid down by the Queen herself.

The moustache was once such a part of the RAF uniform that rules during the Second World War stated: "The whole of the upper lip shall remain unshaven."

Flt Lt Ball was told to cut his back while on a posting with the American Air Force 366 Fighter Squadron, where he operates an F-15 fighter-bomber.

A CAIRNS man has been taking the ladies for a ride, literally, by posing as former MotoGP world champion Valentino Rossi on several visits to a Far Northern cafe.

The man even signed autographs and took a female cafe worker for a ride on his black motorcycle.

Rossi's look-alike was seen eating at the Strait On The Beach Hamburger Cafe, at Holloways Beach, north of Cairns.

But after repeated visits by the look-alike and his "entourage", staff members approached him. Co-owner of the cafe Ros Wall said the rider, who was sporting a shaved head, sideburns, a pencil-thin moustache and goatee, was happy to agree when asked whether he was the racing champ. "Yeah, the Doctor", he said, referring to Rossi’s nickname.

"It was him all right," she said before The Cairns Post discovered the man was a look-alike.

The real Valentino Rossi is competing in the MotoGP World Championship and is set to race in Shanghai next week.

Stalin's body double finally tells his story

The narrow, baggy eyes and droopy moustache are unmistakable – features that terrified half the world, condemned millions to a cruel death and which even today are an instant symbol of monstrous despotism.

Yet the man who so clearly has Joseph Stalin's face upon his shoulders is not Stalin at all.

Despite the careful curve of the brows and the immaculate hair, these pictures show someone else entirely, someone who has never been supreme leader of the Soviet Republic.

This, as the Russian public has been learning, is Felix Dadaev, a dancer and juggler who, amid the desperate defence against Hitler's invading armies, was ordered to the Kremlin to work as Stalin's body double.

For more than half a century, Dadaev remained silent, fearing a death sentence should he dare to open his mouth.

But at the age of 88,

he has finally come forward to tell a quite remarkable story.
