Nature on my balcony!

When I got home that night from work, mom was gone, but the babies were cuddled together on my balcony. Not sure what to do, I consulted my neighbor, but since she was as dumbfounded as I was, I decided I would try to put the little ones back in their nest.

As I went to reach for them, one of the two flew off. I finally caught the other one, being as gentle as could, and returned her to her home. Sort of relieved, I went in to relax. When I came out later to water my plants, the one little one was still there. I ran out of water, so I returned to the source of water, my kitchen. When I came out just seconds later, the last of my tenants had taken flight.

I checked to be sure that she was not below my balcony, maybe have fallen over. Once I was reassured that she had actually flown away, I looked onto the early evening sky and smiled.

This young Mourning Dove started to nest in my potted plant on
Wednesday, July 1st, 1998.

1. Denial - This was probably the most surreal stage, with Obama campaign eventually elevating unblinking denial into a campaign smear. The Atlantic ran an article entitled "the Eagleton Scenario" and the NYT published an op-ed gently and kingly suggesting that Palin "should withdraw" to avoid humiliation.

2. Anger - Jeffrey Bell has suggested that the left's hateful anger toward Palin has to do with the ideological grip that social issues have on the movemen

Still - DU threads like this one are insanely venomous even by the left's usual standards.

3. Bargaining - The Obama campaign is quickly learning that "our Presidential pick is slightly more experienced than your Vice Presidential pick" is an unhappy argumentative place to be.

4. Depression - Last night's 54-44 Gallup poll has forced liberals to move into this next stage

5. Acceptance - From this political community? Yeah, not so much.

As anybody who has grieved inconsolably over the death of a loved one can attest, extended mourning is, in part, a perverse kind of optimism. Surely this bottomless, unwavering sorrow will amount to something, goes the tape loop. Surely if I keep it up long enough I’ll accomplish my goal, and the person will stop being dead.

Last week the Internet and European news outlets were flooded with poignant photographs of Gana, an 11-year-old gorilla at the Münster Zoo in Germany, holding up the body of her dead baby, Claudio, and pursing her lips toward his lifeless fingers

Gorillas, and probably a lot of other animals as well, have a grasp of their mortality and will grieve for the dead and are really just like us after all.

Nobody knows what emotions swept through Gana’s head and heart as she persisted in cradling and nuzzling the remains of her son.

They were saying goodbye, or maybe, Won’t you please come back home?

I have a vision of a Truth Commission in the United States that will create a process of accountability for the war crimes and human rights violations committed by the Bush administration during these past eight years. I see a campaign that will enable our citizens to eventually cast a vote for the principles of the Hague and Geneva Conventions that protect the rights of prisoners of war and of civilian populations. I see a growing movement of citizens empowered to bring Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, and others into a process of justice for their commissioning of illegal wiretapping, torturing prisoners, and killing innocent civilians.

During this season of electoral politics in the United States, I find it very challenging to keep a focus on the critical task of healing the wounds of our nation. Barack Obama is certainly one of the best orators I've heard in a long time. For me, he is the hands down choice for president over McCain . However, amidst the fanfare and celebration of the Democratic Convention, my heart was deeply troubled and my soul was crying out on behalf of the civilian casualties of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. These innocent victims are deemed to be 'collateral damage.' Last week, newscasts reported that ninety civilians died in Afghanistan due to American bombings--sixty of them were children. We heard this information sandwiched in between the roar and celebration of the Convention without a moment to pause in mourning.

Dr. Dre's 20-year-old son found dead in LA

LOS ANGELES - Dr. Dre's 20-year-old son has died, the rapper's publicist said Tuesday.

"Dr. Dre is mourning the loss of his son Andre Young Jr.," publicist Lori Earl said in a statement.

Young Jr., who was named after his father, was found dead Saturday by his mother at their home in suburban Woodland Hills, county coroner's Lt. John Kades said.

An autopsy was performed Monday, but the cause of death wasn't likely to be determined for eight weeks while toxicology tests are done, Kades said.

BERLIN (AP) — A gorilla at a zoo in the German city of Muenster is refusing to let go of her dead baby’s body several days after it died of unknown causes.

Allwetter Zoo spokeswoman Ilona Zuehlke says the 3-month-old male baby died on Saturday but its 11-year-old mother continues to carry its body around. Zuehlke says such behavior is not uncommon to gorillas.

Zuehlke says the mother “is mourning and must say goodbye.” The mother gorilla is named Gana.

Tragedy has become part of life of most Iraqis; few families have been spared

An Iraqi member of staff at the BBC Baghdad bureau reflects on the daily toll the violence is taking on the people of his country. For security reasons, the author's name is not being published.

Violent death in Iraq is an everyday event. In Baghdad people put up signs on the street to announce deaths. I am always surprised to read one which says that someone died of natural causes.

Because it is so common, you get used to the number of violent deaths. The problem is you just bury it deep inside you. It becomes like a time bomb, you never know when it is going to explode.

Mourning events have replaced birthdays and wedding parties. You are always surrounded by death. The unwanted guest will visit you at any moment

New York's Bravest Mourn Lost Brooklyn Firefighter

clipper's remarks: A Brooklyn firehouse that lost five members on 9/11 is again mourning the loss of one of its own today, this one tragically killed while on vacation with his family. NY1’s Amanda Farinacci filed the following report.

A flag hangs at half-staff and a bunting waved today outside the quarters of Ladder 111 Engine 214 in Bedford-Stuyvesant, days after 41-year-old firefighter Martin Simmons drowned trying to rescue his son while on vacation in Nevada.

“Marty was what we call a premier firefighter in this company,” said firefighter Joe Honan. “He was almost one of the senior guys. He was a guy that took no trouble running things.”

Firefighters say Simmons, a 17-year FDNY veteran, had been looking forward to his vacation so he could spend time with his wife and three sons.

Monday, Simmons was out on a boat with his family in Lake Tahoe, when he jumped into the water after his 10-year-old son developed a leg cramp while swimming.

The child was pulled to safety, but Simmons drowned. His body was flown back to New York Thursday night, and two Nevada firefighters accompanied and supported his family.

“We just made them a part of the family,” said Hanon. “We're all firefighters, it doesn't matter where you're from. They escorted the family back here so we took care of them when they got here.”

Simmons spent most of his career at the firehouse nicknamed the "Nut House" for its tendency toward pranks. Firefighters say when he wasn't training younger members or planning one of many of the company's social events, he could be found with a sports manual in his hand, learning how to better coach his sons.

Sella Will Be Salieri in Chicago Shakespeare's 'Amadeus' This Fall

Sella played Prior in the national tour of Angels in America, directed by Michael Mayer, who also directed the actor as narrator Clifford in Broadway's Side Man. He won the Clarence Derwent Award and a Drama League Citation for it. Also on Broadway, Sella appeared in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (as Boris), My Fair Lady (as Freddie) and Cabaret (Emcee). In 1998 he won a Helen Hayes Award as Outstanding Supporting Actor, Resident Play for his work in The Shakespeare Theatre's Mourning Becomes Electra in Washington, DC. In 2007, he starred with Maggie Smith in the West End production of Edward Albee's The Lady From Dubuque.

World's biggest coffin...

Ukrainian undertakers say they have built the world's first death-themed restaurant - in a 65ft long coffin.

The huge casket is decorated with dozens of wreaths and normal-sized coffins, reports the Daily Telegraph.

Diners can order from a menu that includes "Nine Day" and "Forty Day" salads - named after local mourning rituals - and a dish called "Let's meet in paradise".

The restaurant, called Eternity, is the work of a funeral parlour in the town of Truskavets, in the west of the country near the Polish border.

The undertakers hope their restaurant will be confirmed as the world's biggest coffin, attracting tourists to a region currently best known for its mineral-rich bathing waters.

Guinness World Records confirmed the biggest coffin title is currently unclaimed, but said they had yet to receive an application from Ukraine.

At his home in Sur Baher, a Palestinian village now part of east Jerusalem, friends and neighbours gathered to offer condolences as the family prepared to erect a traditional mourning tent. But there was little sign of the celebration that sometimes accompanies a “martyr” death, and no flags that would suggest political affiliation.

Mr. Dwait was a married father of two young sons who worked in construction with Israeli companies from the age of 15. Mr. Dwait's family said he had never been the same after a soured romance with a young Russian Jewish woman, whom he met eight years ago, and a subsequent jail term.

“She came here, she lived here in his parents' house with him, she stayed for a month,” remembered his cousin, Osama Dwait, 35, last night.
