We hoped that we didn't have to hide our ambition or pretend that our goals were effortlessly achieved ("I never really set out to be in public affairs, much less to run for this office," the Governor has said.) We hoped that we could be mothers without having our motherhood be our defining characteristic, as it seems to be for Palin. We hoped that we did not have to be perfect beauty queens to get to where we wanted to be in life, that our looks, good or bad, wouldn't matter. Whether or not you think it's appropriate to comment on Palin's appearance, the fact of her attractiveness exists, and is being used to her advantage by Republican sloganeers ("the hottest Governor in the coldest state," et. al).

she has always embodied that perfectly pleasing female archetype

Tags: women, politics, feminism, gender, culture

<clipSource>http://jezebel.com/5045934/why-sarah-palin-incites-near+violent-rage-in-normally-reasonable-women</clipSource>

It Will Not Prevent The Children From Getting Burnrned

clipped by: klippety
clipper's remarks: More Sickness Perpetuated By An Irresponsible Industry

Clip Source: www.commondreams.org

Fire Retardant Chemical Found In Children

WASHINGTON - A fire retardant chemical used in electronics, toys and furniture has been detected in children's blood at triple the levels found in their mothers, the Environmental Working Group reported on Thursday.

<IMG height="224" width="350" align="bottom" alt="[Boys cool down in a public fountain in a file photo. Then they attacked her daughter, who actually is pregnant now, for being unmarried. When liberals start acting like they're opposed to pre-marital sex and mothers having careers, you know McCain's vice presidential choice has knocked them back on their heels.

"And I do think, too, that you have to weigh the situation. It's one thing to have one or two or three children, especially if they are healthy children. And everyone knows that women and men are different and that moms and dads are different and that women -- the burden of child care almost always falls on the woman. But I think, when you have five children, one a 4-month-old Down syndrome baby, and a daughter who is 17, who is also a child and who is going to need her mother very much in the next few months and years with her own baby coming, that I don't see how you cannot make your family your first priority. An estimated 80 percent of North American mothers breastfeed their babies. New research out of Canada suggests some mothers who take medicines which contain codeine may be inadvertently harming their breastfed infants.

The study done at the University of Western Ontario indicates some women have a rare genetic predisposition to metabolize codeine-laced drugs into morphine faster than normal.

The condition means morphine gets passed through the mother and can harm a nursing infant's central nervous system.

Doctors say the threat of overdosing the baby appears reversible if the mother stops taking the medication.

The study's findings are published in the online issue of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics.
