Saimir Strati

Saimir Strati (Vlora, Albania, April 11, 1966) is an Albanian artist who is regarded as one of the world's most well known modern mosaic artists.

He has used materials including nails, toothpicks, corks, sea glass, eggshells, compact discs, coffee beans, porcelain and mirror glass among other materials. He is also a painter.

Every world record attempt has Saimir Strati has attempted has been a live performance. He has also done large scale artistic performances in Dubai.

Algeria: al-Qaeda Connection

Two days in a row this week car bombs rocked towns near the capital of Algeria, killing 60 members of the security forces, police recruits, and Canadian workers. The North African wing of the al-Qaeda terror network, known until last year as the Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat, has claimed responsibility for the recent attacks. The group has also claimed several earlier attacks including the twin suicide bombings of United Nations offices and a court building in the Algerian capital last December.

"This is Baghdad and not Algiers," bemoaned a stunned witness on Canal Algerie, the Algerian television network. The booby trapped cars, the suicide attacks, the method and the types of explosives used are reminiscent of insurgency attacks during its peak in Iraq.

Since the Anbar Awakening and the intensified hunt for al-Qaeda members in Iraq, hundreds of Jihadis have fled the country to Yemen, Afghanistan and Pakistan. However, many returned to Algeria

'Virtual Archaeologist' Reconnects Fragments Of An Ancient Civilization

Reconstructing an excavated fresco, mosaic or similar archaeological object is like solving a giant jigsaw puzzle, only far more difficult. The original object often has broken into thousands of tiny pieces -- many of which lack any distinctive color, pattern or texture and possess edges that have eroded over the centuries.

"We mimic the archaeologists' methods as much as possible, so that they can really use our system as a tool,"

The flatbed scanner first is used to record several high-resolution color images of the fragment. Next, the fragment is placed on the turntable, and the laser rangefinder measures its visible surface from various viewpoints. The fragment is then turned upside down and the process is repeated.

One algorithm aligns the various partial surface measurements

Another analyzes the scanned images to detect cracks or other minute surface markings

The system then integrates all of the information

Musharraf impeachment discussed

Leading members of Pakistan's governing coalition have been meeting to finalise a plan to impeach the country's president Pervez Musharraf.

They accuse him of misconduct and of violating the constitution, and have urged him to resign.

Ruling parties say he is incompetent and standing in the way of democracy. He has yet to respond. The US says it is an internal matter for Pakistan.

beads out of fused plastic bags

Recently, I saw a posting about fusing plastic bags to make a plastic fabric. That inspired me to make plastic beads out of fused plastic bags.

You use the same technique you would apply to making paper beads, i.e. cut a triangle out of the “fabric” and roll it up from the broad to the narrow end. You may encounter more resistance from the plastic than you would from paper. I first roll up a bead without applying glue. I then unfurl the bead, apply the glue (Uhu Mosaic) and roll it up again. Like paper beads, you can leave the bead like that or apply a layer of lacquer.
