The Air Force also announced Thursday that three ballistic missile crew members from the Minot Air Force Base who fell asleep while holding classified launch code devices have been sanctioned and "decertified from missile operations."

(AP) The Air Force says at least three ballistic missile crew members at bases in North Dakota and Montana have been taken off the job while the military investigates allegations ranging from sexual abuse to missing classified components used in underground launch control centers.

The Air Force announced Thursday that an officer who earlier worked at Minot Air Force Base's 91st Space Wing notified the military in May that he and another officer had lied about destroying classified launch components in July 2005.

"They were supposed to destroy them and they signed documents saying they destroyed them," said Maj. Laurie A. Arellano, an Air Force spokeswoman. Instead, she said, "they took them home."

If there's a global warming event -- a mammoth hurricane, tornado, or forest fire -- in our neighborhood, then we get concerned. From this perspective, the loss of a few thousand acres of ice in a remote corner of Montana hardly seems significant. Most of us don't see it as a danger sign.

But it is. Disappearing glaciers is a harbinger of huge problems. In the West, the most obvious is drought.

By 2020 Glacier National Park will be "Puddles National Park" and the rest of the west won't be much better off. So where's the concern?

It's said our primeval ancestors had a simple arithmetic system: "One, two, three, many." That describes the focus of many 2008 voters, whose concerns are the economy, energy prices, Iraq, and "those other problems." As we get closer to the presidential election, most Americans aren't worried about global warming. Maybe they will be when they turn the tap and no water comes out.

In early August we toured Glacier National Park with the Sierra Club, catching a glimpse of several of the humongous ice fields. In 1910 there were 150 glaciers in the park; now there are 25, which are losing 9 percent of their mass per year. Sometime between 2015 and 2020 they'll disappear. Locals joke the 1.4 million acres will be renamed "Puddles National Park."

Why isn't global climate change seen as a more important issue?

Barack Obama’s presidential campaign has put the brakes on ads that were running in seven states carried by the GOP in the 2004 presidential election, FOX News has learned.

Of the seven states — including Alaska, Georgia, Montana, North Carolina, North Dakota — Florida and Virginia are considered key battlegrounds this year. Obama’s decision to stop advertising in those states is raising eyebrows.

Aides to Obama told FOX News that the changes are related to the convention next week. They wouldn’t discuss the specifics of their ad strategy, but the Obama campaign insists that it has not pulled out of those states permanently, calling this a temporary suspension.

When Obama’s campaign took over the Democratic Party earlier this year, it embraced Howard Dean’s 50-state strategy, which is aimed at courting Democrats nationwide. The strategy has generated controversy, though, because many Democrats say it wastes money in states where they have no chance of winning.

AMERICA'S Amish — a quiet, reclusive people who disdain trappings of the modern world such as electricity and who travel in horse-drawn buggies — have seen their population nearly double in the past 16 years.

Members of the Anabaptist Protestant sect moved from Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries and founded communities in the north-eastern states of Pennsylvania, Ohio and Indiana.

Today there are Amish communities in 28 US states and the Canadian province of Ontario, according to a new study released by the Anabaptist and Pietist studies department at Elizabethtown College in Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania.

While in 1992 the researchers put the Amish population at 125,000, that figure rose to 231,000 in 2008 — an 86% increase.

During that period, Amish communities were founded in the states of Arkansas, Colorado, Maine, Mississippi and West Virginia.

Meanwhile, the Amish population grew 400% in Virginia, 200% in Kentucky, and 150% in Montana.

I never thought I would type the words above. In my mind, pigs would fly and Tyra Banks would leave television and turn to living a quiet life of knitting socks in Montana before Crocs, the most hideous and loathed of all footwear would be in Vogue, and not just any Vogue but French Vogue.

The Communication Workers of America released their second annual state-by-state Internet speed report, finding "the average U.S. Internet speed was 2.3 megabits per second (mbps), representing a minimal gain of 0.4 mbps over last year's average speed. At this rate, it will take us more than a hundred years to catch up to Japan, where average speeds are estimated at 63 mbps." The fastest states were Rhode Island, Delaware, New Jersey, Virginia, and Massachusetts, while the slowest speeds were in rural states: Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, North Dakota, and Alaska.

Father, son charged with animal cruelty after horse rescued
By PAMELA J. PODGER of the Missoulian

A father-son team from Georgia who had been backpacking with four horses in the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness since June have been cited for animal cruelty, according to the Ravalli County Sheriff's Office.

They found the animal lying on the trail, still saddled and without access to water, abandoned about six miles from the Big Creek trailhead.

Missoula resident Dawn Merrill, 41, who was riding on the Big Creek trail Aug. 1 with friend Charmain “Q” DeHart, 42, of Stevensville, said they were “appalled” by the condition of one of the horses.

The Georgia men told officials they had purchased the animals in several states outside of Montana in preparation for a trip into the wilderness, said Ravalli County Sheriff's Deputy Travis McElderry, who investigated the case.

McElderry said the horse has been seen by a Bitterroot vet, but it is “touch on and go” whether the animal will survive.

First of all, no offense to Dr. Dre, but stay away from audio equipment endorsed by celebrities, What's next, Hannah Montana headphones? Let's start with the sound, nothing special here, especially for $350. Highs are not there and bass is far from controlled. Do yourself a favor and do some research in names like Sennheiser, AKG, & Grado. These brands will give you professional sound reproduction and at less than half the cost of the "Beats" phones. Bottom line, research and choose wisely. Your ears will thank you in the end.

Snakebites: what not to do

After 23 years as an emergency room physician, Dr. Mark Rabold still takes his business seriously but can’t help but wonder in amusement about some of the situations he’s encountered involving rattlesnake bites.

One of his favorite stories involves an anesthesiologist who had just recently moved to Montana. The guy ran over a rattler with his dirt bike, but the tire spun up the snake, which hit the biker in the stomach and bit him.

“His buddy got the jumper cables and hooked him up to a giant battery for his semi, then fired up the engine. He probably had to put down his beer first to put the clamps on each side of the snake bite,” Rabold said, laughing. “The guy is screaming, yelling and seizing from this treatment; they thought it would somehow break the venom down.

“Far more people die from bee stings, or from hitting a deer on the highway.”
