For about 300 years Jupiter's banded atmosphere has shown
a remarkable feature to telescopic viewers,
a large swirling storm system known as
The Great Red
Spot.

In 2006, another red
storm system appeared,
actually seen to form as smaller whitish oval-shaped storms
merged and then developed the curious reddish hue.

Now, Jupiter has a third red spot, again
produced from a smaller whitish storm.

The murkiness of the Dark River is caused by absorption of background starlight by dust, although the nebula contains mostly hydrogen and molecular gas. Antares, the bright star that appears yellow just below the center of the frame, is embedded in the colorful Rho Ophiuchi nebula clouds. Explanation: Dark shapes with bright edges winging their way through dusty NGC 6188 are tens of light-years long. The emission nebula is found near the edge of an otherwise dark large molecular cloud in the southern constellation Ara, about 4,000 light-years away. Formed in that region only a few million years ago, the massive young stars of the embedded Ara OB1 association sculpt the fantastic shapes and power the nebular glow with stellar winds and intense ultraviolet radiation. The recent star formation itself was likely triggered by winds and supernova explosions, from previous generations of massive stars, that swept up and compressed the molecular gas. A false-color Hubble palette was used to create the this gorgeous wide-field image and shows emission from sulfur, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms in red, green, and blue hues. At the estimated distance of NGC 6188, the picture spans about 300 light-years.

Tags: space, the emission nebula, molecular cloud, wallpaper

<clipSource>http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/image/0805/NGC6188_ebersole.jpg</clipSource>

Do you see the face of Orion?

clipped by: skwirlinator
clipper's remarks: Do you see the tongue stud piercing?

Clip Source: antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov

Clip Source: www.coolscifi.com

Explanation: This tantalizing array of nebulae and stars can be found about 2 degrees south of the famous star-forming Orion Nebula. The region abounds with energetic young stars producing jets and outflows that push through the surrounding material at speeds of hundreds of kilometers per second. An eerie blue glow and ominous columns of dark dust highlight M78 and other bright

in the constellation of Orion.

The dark filamentary

light of several bright blue stars that

M78
is about five
light-years across and visible through a small telescope.

M78 appears

The
1970s are sometimes ignored by astronomers.

In particular, this beautiful grouping of reflection nebulae
in Orion - NGC 1977, NGC 1975, and NGC 1973 - are
usually overlooked in favor of the substantial glow from the
nearby stellar nursery better known as the
Orion Nebula.

Found along Orion's sword just north
of the
bright Orion Nebula complex, these reflection nebulae are
also associated with
Orion's giant molecular cloud about
1,500 light-years away, but
are dominated by the characteristic blue color of interstellar
dust reflecting
light from hot young stars.

Many northern hemisphere observers claim to see the general shape of
a running man
in the cosmic dust cloud but, of course, they're looking at the view

image, the tornado glows
with infrared light generated as the outflow heats surrounding
dust clouds.

The color coding shows a trend from red to blue hues at the tornado's
tip indicating a systematic increase in emission at shorter wavelengths.

The trend is thought to indicate an increase in molecular excitation
closer to where the head of the jet is impacting

Explanation:

Stars are forming in a dense
molecular cloud a mere 1,000 light-years
away in the constellation
Serpens Cauda
(The Serpent's Tail).

At that estimated distance, this sharp, near-infrared close-up of the
active Serpens star-forming region spans about 2
arcminutes
or just over half a light-year.

Though such
near-infrared
observations can be made by mountain-top
telescopes with specialized detectors, near-infrared
light has too long a wavelength to be visible to the eye.

This view was recorded with a sensitive camera,
HAWK-I
(High Acuity, Wide field K-band Imaging), just commissioned at the
Paranal Observatory in Chile.

Intended
to illustrate HAWK-I's impressive capabilities,
the tantalizing image highlights reddish young stars
and protostars, likely up to a few million years old,
emerging from the
nebular gas and dust.

Explanation:

Described as a "dusty curtain" or "ghostly apparition",
mysterious reflection nebula
vdB 152 really is very
faint.

It lies about 1400 light-years away, along the northern Milky Way
in the royal constellation Cepheus.

Near the edge of a large molecular cloud,
pockets of cosmic dust in the region block light from background stars
or scatter light from the embedded bright star (top)
giving parts of
the nebula
a characteristic blue color.

Ultraviolet light from the star is also
thought
to cause a dim reddish
luminescence
in the nebular dust.

Though stars do form in
molecular clouds, this star
seems to have only accidentally wandered
into the area, as its measured velocity through
interstellar space is very different from
the cloud's velocity.

This deep telescopic image spans about 7 light-years at the
estimated distance

Explanation:
Reflection nebulas reflect light from a nearby star.
Many small carbon
grains in the nebula reflect the light.

The blue color typical of reflection nebula is caused by blue light being
more efficiently scattered by the carbon
dust than red light.

The brightness of the nebula is determined by the
size and density of the reflecting grains,
and by the color and brightness of the neighboring star(s).

NGC 1435,
pictured above, surrounds
Merope (23 Tau), one of the brightest stars in the
Pleiades (M45).

The Pleiades nebulosity is caused by a
chance encounter between an

Explanation:
What creates the cosmic dust sculptures in the Rosette Nebula?

Noted for the common beauty of its
overall shape, parts of the
Rosette Nebula, also known as NGC 2244,
show beauty even when viewed up close.

Visible above are
globules of dark
dust and gas that are slowly being
eroded away by the energetic light and winds by nearby massive stars.

Left alone long enough, the
molecular-cloud globules
would likely form stars and planets.

The above image was taken in very specific colors of

Sulfur
(shaded red),
Hydrogen
(green), and
Oxygen (blue).

The Rosette Nebula spans about 50
light-years
across, lies
about 4,500 light-years away,
and can be seen with a small telescope towards the constellation of the
Unicorn (Monoceros).
