Milky Way's Spiral Arms Missing In Action

Now, new images from NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope are shedding light on the true structure of the Milky Way, revealing that it has just two major arms of stars instead of the four it was previously thought to possess.

The team of scientists now has new infrared imagery from Spitzer of an expansive swath of the Milky Way, stretching 130 degrees across the sky and one degree above and below the galaxy's mid-plane

. This extensive mosaic combines 800,000 snapshots and includes over 110 million stars.

Though galaxy arms appear to be intact features, stars are actually constantly moving in and out of them as they orbit the center of the Milky Way, like London commuters in a busy traffic circle. Our own sun might have once resided in a different arm. Since it was formed more than 4 billion years ago, it has traveled around the galaxy 16 times.

Explanation: Snow-capped stratovolcano Mt. Damavand climbs to 5,670 meters (18,598 feet) near the left edge in this panoramic view of the world at night. Pan to the right and your gaze will sweep across the arch of our Milky Way Galaxy above the Alborz Mountain Range bordering the Caspian Sea. Near the center of the panorama, recorded in the predawn hours of April 4th, bright stars Deneb and Altair lie close to the curve of the Milky Way, above the glow of the Haraz valley. Farther right, brilliant Jupiter dominates the sky near the stars, nebulae, and dark dust clouds toward the bulging galactic center. Finally, the horizon glow at the right edge, below bright yellowish giant star Antares, is from the city of Damavand, named for the legendary mountain peak.

The night sky shines with remarkable detail above the Paranal mountain of Chile, in this image taken on July 21, 2007. The Milky Way, our galaxy, appears as a wide band of stars and dust clouds, spanning more than 100 degrees on the sky.

At the center, two bright objects are visible, the planet Jupiter, the brightest, and the star Antares.

It's empty in here

Thin air is busy with breathing fear

Don't know what to do now
Light breaks each night crossing somehow

The Milkyway still glistens
With stars falling through my uncertain mission

I'm not doing well with this last pitch of years

Perhaps I already died and am lost in too many tears

These years are not 'golden' yet

"Not enough," my mind screams without relent

Now that I know it is truly up to me

I am brutal with the lament of this broken body to be free

Too late now to call for a rewrite

All I long for keeps slipping just out of sight

So, this is the event horizon of my kind?

How will be the Journey through and what will I find?

Vaporization....or a non-event after all?

Am done with all who only pretend to have risen after their fall

An hour is too long

And a lifetime too short for my impassioned song.

When I am empty what do I do?

I give it up, wrap my senses in music and wonder who?

And how much longer I must wait

Before I have gone past too late.
