It would be an enormous driver of economic growth and strengthen our leverage in the Middle East because we would no longer be reliant on their oil.

Clip Source: greenwombat.blogs.fortune.cnn.com

As Detroit automakers shutter SUV and truck factories, the decades-long de-industrialization of the Midwest continues apace. "Two hearts. Non-petrol good exports were up 17.7% y/y — so it wasn’t all driven by higher prices on the United States (small) petroleum exports. Real goods exports were up 11% in June, and 9.6% for the first half of the year. And real non-oil goods imports aren’t growing. Real non-petrol goods imports in June 2008 were 2.7% lower than in June 2007 — and for h1, real non-petrol goods imports are down by a bit less than 1%.

Exports of corn, beans (and other oilseeds) and wheat are up 90% in nominal terms, rising from $13.6b in the first half of 2007 to $25.9b in the first half of 2008. It isn’t all just higher prices — real exports of foods, feeds and beverages are up 10%. The United States’ financial capital should be grateful it is linked in a currency union to the agricultural Midwest; think where the dollar would be if the US only exported repackaged residential mortgages. Unfortunately, the media and politicians have not done a good enough job of making prophets account for their past errant prophetic utterances. Instead, they accept as fact whatever dubious claims Hansen and Gore happen to be making at the moment.

Clip Source: www.openmarket.org

While doing some research, I came across an article in the NY Times headlined “U.S. Data Since 1895 Fail to Show Warming Trend,” which was written in 1991.

Dr. James E. Hansen and then-Senator Al Gore were both present in the piece. The article noted that Hansen’s study says (as of 1991), “average global temperatures have risen by nearly 1 degree Fahrenheit in this century and that the average temperatures in the 1980’s are the highest on record.”

This all sounds like a broken record now, but one particular sentenced grabbed my attention: “Many of the computer models that predict global warming also predict that certain areas, including the Midwest in the United States, would suffer more frequent droughts.”

This statement creates problems for today’s alarmists, who insist that models can be trusted, even though the models have been highly inaccurate. Some sixteen years after the article was printed, the Midwest has experienced floods the last two summers.

Tags: global warming, nytimes headliner, u.s.data, hansen, al gore

<clipSource>http://www.openmarket.org/2008/08/05/delta-to-offer-wi-fi/</clipSource>

The National Animal Identification System, food safety, and school lunches: cui bono?

clipped by: enbar
clipper's remarks: A Wisconsin family farmer criticizes the NAIS, which requires all livestock to carry a RFID tag (prohibitively expensive for non-CAFO-type operations, i.e., small family farmers). To him, it looks like another agribusiness attempt to shut down small, organic producers.

Clip Source: www.madison.com

Jeff Pausma: Congress takes another potshot at family farmers

The scandal at the Hallmark/Westland plant in
Chino, Calif., has sparked interest in the trend of securing local
meat from sources that are grass-fed, organic and come from animals
raised humanely. Our kids deserve the safest meat in their food.
Sadly, Congress is now considering squashing such efforts to get
local foods into the School Lunch Program.

In June, the House Appropriations Agriculture
Subcommittee, at the behest of Rep. Rosa DeLauro, D-Conn., said it
was considering a provision that would force schools to buy meat
for the School Lunch Program from sources enrolled in the federal
government's National Animal Identification System. NAIS is hugely
controversial among family farmers like me. The U.S. government
wants us to inventory, identify and track the movement of all
agriculture-related animals.

Is NAIS really about consumer safety or
