A fire at downtown Seattle's Fisher Plaza has interrupted service at some top Web sites, including Microsoft's Bing Travel and Authorize.net.

It's a little unclear exactly when the fire at the Fisher Plaza data center started--some reports say Thursday night, others say just after midnight Friday. A message on Bing Travel pins the problems on a blown transformer.

"The blown transformer knocked out power to the entire building, which is home to the Bing Travel servers," a message on the site says. "This is isolated to Bing Travel only, and there is no impact to any other aspect of Bing."

Bing Travel says it's working hard to restore service, and has set 5 p.m. PDT Friday as the target time for resumption of service. "In the meantime, you may use Microsoft travel partner Orbitz for your travel needs," the site says.

New Linux patch could circumvent Microsoft's FAT patents

A Linux developer has published a new kernel patch that provides a workaround to avoid Microsoft's patents on the FAT filesystem. The patch, which has undergone extensive legal review by patent lawyers, could make it possible to use FAT on Linux without having to pay licensing fees to Microsoft.

The outcome of the lawsuit created ambiguity around the legal status of the Linux FAT implementation. Microsoft contends that the suit was a largely isolated incident and that there are no plans to pursue litigation against individual Linux users. For commercial Linux adopters, however, the situation is murkier. Linux is widely used on mobile and embedded devices, and many of these need to be able to read FAT-formatted removable media.

By implementing a workaround, the Linux community is avoiding the risk entirely and making it possible to have real-world interoperability without having to pay licensing fees to Microsoft.

Rick Hodgin has an interesting opinion piece on geek.com. In spite of its clumsy title -- "Death knell heard for Microsoft and really all proprietary efforts" -- its a well written piece on why you should start getting comfortable with open source.

The French police reckon they saved €50 million switching to Linux, the New York Stock Exchange did it a couple of years ago and Amazon have been using it for almost a decade. If you're a user of Firefox, Thunderbird, Gimp, Blender, Audacity, NVU, OpenOffice.org, Apache or MySQL you're already part of the movement. And if you're not, it really is worth a look!

Hidden Linux : File mysteries

Here's a little mystery for you. Imagine you have three files on a Windows machine called

HTML_File.htm
PDF_File.pdf
Text_File.txt

Windows will have no problem opening the appropriate program when you double-click them because of those three-letter extensions. If however you drop the extensions or mix them up, you'll have problems.

Imagine that $299 netbook today costing $50 less just because it comes with Linux. The reality is that $299 netbook might instead cost $274, with the extra $25 being put into the vendor’s pocket per sale, instead of Microsoft’s pocket. And therein lies the current draw away from Microsoft-based products.

I still believe the future will be ARM-based ultimately, but I think Intel’s intrusion into those roadmaps may push it out a bit.

Who should know more about PC threats than the company whose software makes most of them possible? Is

Microsoft also badly needs to do something to add zing to the Windows 7 release. That’s zing, not Bing, which will, presumably, already be in Windows 7. Maybe Morro is supposed to be the feature people will upgrade to get.

Morro’s real time anti-malware service, which will route all the URLs you want to visit by Microsoft first for a check against known malware sites, ought to be a winner. As quickly as Microsoft finds out about a malware location, it would immediately protect Morro users from the site.

Of course, this requires that the Morro servers not slow down the user’s browser performance and raises privacy concerns. What will Microsoft do with all your browsing data? Nothing too bad, I suspect, but it’s always worth wondering and asking.

Microsoft (MSFT) announced last week companies buying PCs between now and the day new Windows 7 OS will be available (Oct 22) will get a free upgrade to the new OS. But it failed to mention that the free upgrade is limited to 25 units per company, says PC World.

This is what Microsoft said last week on the Windows 7 Team Blog:

And we have the answer for people who need a new PC now but still want to get Windows 7 and that’s the Windows 7 Upgrade Option Program, which kicks off tomorrow, June 26th! Anyone who buys a PC from a participating OEM or retailer with Windows Vista Home Premium, Business or Ultimate on it will all receive an upgrade to the corresponding version of Windows 7 at little or no cost to customers.

This means that businesses who buy more than 25 PCs between now and Oct. 22 will have to pay between $199.99-$219.99 per PC if they want to upgrade to the Windows 7 OS. Or, as PCWorld says, the companies will have to purchase a Software Assurance agreement at $100-$15

NEW YORK, June 28 (Reuters) - Microsoft (MSFT.O) has hired Morgan Stanley (MS.N) to sell Razorfish, its digital agency, and French marketing company Publicis Groupe SA (PUBP.PA) is thought to be a possible bidder, the Financial Times said on its Website late Sunday.

Microsoft acquired the agency, formerly called Avenue A Razorfish, as part of its $6 billion takeover of aQuantive in 2007.

The report cited an analyst valuing Razorfish at $600 million to $700 million, based on sales of about $400 million last year and profit margins for similar businesses of 12 to 13 percent.

Razorfish is one of the largest interactive advertising and marketing agencies, boasting a client list that includes McDonald's Corp (MCD.N), Starwood Hotels & Resorts (HOT.N), and Carnival Cruise Lines.

Microsoft and VivaKi, the digital arm of Publicis, last week unveiled a broad cooperation deal to develop new content, improve marketing performance and better target digital advertising audiences.
