Obama names 500 White House visitors

The White House on Friday released a small list of visitors to the White House since President Barack Obama took office in January.

Under the Obama White House's policy, most names of visitors from Inauguration Day in January through the end of September will never be released. The White House says it plans to release most of the names of visitors from October on

Bill Gates, Oprah Winfrey, actor George Clooney, former Sen. Thomas Daschle, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, and John Podesta,

The White House warns that many names that may appear familiar — and controversial —do not in fact refer to the most famous people to carry those names. Jeremiah Wright is on the list, but it's not the president's former pastor. Michael Jordan is not the basketball player. This Michael Moore is not a filmmaker. And William Ayers, who took a group tour of the White House, isn't the former radical from Chicago.

Free Speech and Double Standards

During a recent interview Michael Moore compared people going through foreclosure to victims of rape.

I need to type it again because maybe then I'll believe it: a man compared people in a situation by choice - as no one held a gun to their head and forced them to agree to loan terms they may be unable to fulfill in hard times; people who purchased more house than they could afford; people who purchased second and third homes; people who had to downsize because of the economy - to women who were raped, forced to spread their legs against their will.

I'm going to take a safe guess and say that Michael Moore doesn't know a victim of rape or has never known physical violation. I have two friends who are survivors of rape and in my family we have dealt with a similar violation.

We can do it!

FIVE THINGS WE DEMAND THE PRESIDENT AND CONGRESS DO IMMEDIATELY:

1. Declare a moratorium on all home evictions.

2. Congress must join the civilized world and expand Medicare For All Americans.

3. Demand publicly-funded elections and a prohibition on elected officials leaving office and becoming lobbyists.

4. Each of the 50 states must create a state-owned public bank like they have in North Dakota.

5. Save this fragile planet and declare that all the energy resources above and beneath the ground are owned collectively by all of us.

FIVE THINGS WE CAN DO TO MAKE CONGRESS AND THE PRESIDENT LISTEN TO US:

1. Each of us must get into the daily habit of taking 5 minutes to make four brief calls:

2. Take over your local Democratic Party.

3. Recruit someone to run for office who can win in your local elections next year -- or, better yet, consider running for office yourself!

4. Show up.

5. Start your own media.

He will talk to them when members of Congress have to leave a message on the answering machine. And these are the bankers who helped bring on this calamity and who are now benefiting from it. What does that say to you?

Dougherty told the Observer he had no qualms about launching a religious attack on capitalism. "There have always been people who questioned basing a society on greed. That is what capitalism is. It is based on the greed motive, a radical evil. Moore's use of religious arguments in Capitalism: A Love Story also taps into wider issues happening at the fiery place where US politics and Christianity meet. Though the past few decades appear to have been dominated by religious arguments over abortion and other social issues, those culture wars seem to have died down a little.

WASHINGTON (AFP) – Microsoft co-founder turned philanthropist Bill Gates on Thursday announced 120 million dollars in grants to help small-scale farmers in Africa and India improve their lives through sustainable agriculture.

The grants, announced on the eve of World Food Day, are from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the philanthropic organization co-chaired by Gates and his wife.

"Three-quarters of the world's poorest people get their food and income by farming small plots of land," Gates said as he announced grants to nine projects, mostly in Africa, during a speech to the World Food Prize Symposium in Iowa.

"So if we can make small-holder farming more productive and more profitable, we can have a massive impact on hunger and nutrition and poverty."

Grant money will fund a project to create "community knowledge worker networks" connecting villagers with sources of information via mobile phones in Uganda, where mobile phone penetration is around 80-90 percent.

An Unusual Love Story

I have not yet seen "the most important and urgent political film of our time," as the Huffington Post describes Michael Moore's latest effort, "Capitalism: A Love Story." I have seen some of Moore's other work, and I thought "Sicko" in particular was thought-provoking.

But the problem that the filmmaker faces in pitching "Capitalism" is that Moore himself has made tons of money. While rephrasing a question from Wolf Blitzer, Moore asked somewhat facetiously (at 2:15), "Why am I against capitalism if I've done so well?"

"The pilots would like to see you in the cockpit when we land," she says with a southern drawl.

(The last time an employee of an airline wanted to show me something it was her written reprimand for eating an in-flight meal without paying for it. "Yes," she said, "we have to pay for our own meals on board now.")

The plane landed and I stepped into the cockpit. "Read this," the first officer said. He handed me a letter from the airline to him. It was headlined "LETTER OF CONCERN." It seems this poor fellow had taken three sick days in the past year. The letter was a warning not to take another one -- or else.

In the movie I interview a pilot for a major airline who made $17,000 last year. For four months he was eligible -- and received -- food stamps. Another pilot in the film has a second job as a dog walker.

"I have a second job!," the two pilots said in unison. One is a substitute teacher. The other works in a coffee shop.

Obama but he's only human and therefore fallible. I don't believe (lucky for us) his admin. is as reckless as the Bush/Cheney one was. They cared nothing for people, nothing for the WORLD, only their pipe-dreams of total power were important to them. They were almost non-human. Thank goodness they are no longer in power. I can't imagine what else they would have done to ruin America. Sadly there are some of their ruthless followers carrying-on where they left off. (Beck & Limbaugh) but without power they are neutered and just don't have the BITE their mentors had! Thanks Michael for printing on your site, michaelmoore.com a retraction of sorts about what you think of our President winning the Nobel Peace Prize. I know the Republicans stick together more than we but that's their sin, not blessing. They can't change their minds but we can!

Get Off Obama's Back ...second thoughts from Michael Moore

Friends,

Last night my wife asked me if I thought I was a little too hard on Obama in my letter yesterday congratulating him on his Nobel Prize. "No, I don't think so," I replied. I thought it was important to remind him he's now conducting the two wars he's inherited. "Yeah," she said, "but to tell him, 'Now earn it!'? Give the guy a break -- this is a great day for him and for all of us."

I went back and re-read what I had written. And I listened for far too long yesterday to the right wing hate machine who did what they could to crap all over Barack's big day. Did I -- and others on the left -- do the same?

I think the Nobel committee, in awarding Obama the prize, was also rewarding the fact that something profound had happened in a nation that was founded on racial genocide, built on racist slavery, and held back for a hundred-plus years by vestiges of hateful bigotry

Your swift, early pronouncements -- you will close Guantanamo, you will bring the troops home from Iraq, you want a nuclear weapon-free world, you admitted to the Iranians that we overthrew their democratically-elected president in 1953, you made that great speech to the Islamic world in Cairo, you've eliminated that useless term "The War on Terror," you've put an end to torture -- these have all made us and the rest of the world feel a bit more safe considering the disaster of the past eight years. In eight months you have done an about face and taken this country in a much more sane direction.

You are truly at a crossroads now. You can listen to the generals and expand the war (only to result in a far-too-predictable defeat) or you can declare Bush's Wars over, and bring all the troops home. Now.
