The smaller rocks that most often fall to Earth, it seems, come straight in from the main asteroid belt out between Mars and Jupiter, rather than from the near-Earth asteroid (NEA) population.

This fast track, it turns out, is caused by an obscure effect that was discovered long ago, but only recently recognized as a significant factor in moving asteroids around, called the Yarkovsky effect.

The new study is also good news for protecting the planet.

"It's the first step toward 'know thy enemy'."

<clipSource>http://web.mit.edu/newsoffice/2008/meteorites-0813.html</clipSource>

Eyes on the sky: UFOs are real, whether the government admits it or not

clipped by: A53GG4

Clip Source: blog.mlive.com

Eyes on the sky: UFOs are real, whether the government admits it or not

Posted by The Ann Arbor News August 10, 2008 11:53AM

By Harry Willnus
The most recent UFO survey of Americans found that about 42 million of us have seen something in the sky that we couldn't identify. UFO researchers generally believe that about 90 percent of sightings can be attributed to natural causes such as meteorites, planets, birds, aircraft, satellites, or the moon shining through clouds. However, the remaining 10 percent of reports cannot be so easily explained away. The most intriguing reports often include close-encounter events (within 500 feet) with multiple witnesses who often are highly respected members of the community, such as police officers and pilots.

Other Voices

Called Apophis, the giant meteor is hurtling through space at 10km per second. Scientists are warning that an impact would be far more devastating than the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima at the end of WW2.

At the Zvenigorod Observatory near Moscow, space researchers keep watch on cosmic bodies and study known meteorites to understand their size and inner structure. They are tracking the path of the asteroid Apophis as well. They aim to determine how real the danger is but that will only be clear in a decade's time.

If Apophis passes through a particular point in space called a keyhole the Earth's gravity may change its course for the worst.

Meanwhile, Russia has offered to launch a space probe to plant a radio transmitter on Apophis so its orbit can be more accurately tracked.

Tags: science, space, astronomy

<clipSource>http://www.russiatoday.com/scitech/news/28014</clipSource>

Bio-Earth: Are Planets Living Super-Organisms?

clipped by: papananook
clipper's remarks: Fascinatin article.

Clip Source: www.dailygalaxy.com

Japan's Maruyama Shigenori, one of the world's leading geophysicists, is working on a global formula for a vast new field of study

Old, cold plates on continental fringes sink to “plate graveyards” deep in the Earth’s mantle, and then rise again, creating volcanoes fueled by three-dimensional convection movements deep below the surface.

Clip Source: www.dailygalaxy.com

A rare type of meteorite that could hold clues to the birth of our Solar System has been bought by London's Natural History Museum.

The Ivuna meteorite, obtained from a US private collection, has the same chemical make-up from which the Solar System formed 4.5 billion years ago.

It landed in Tanzania in 1938 as one 705g stone, since split into samples.

Pieces from the UK sample, the largest in any public collection in the world, will be removed for study.

Most Ivuna samples are held in private collections, or by the Tanzanian government.

It's a particularly important specimen to science because it's been so well preserved

Ivuna's chemical make-up, which matches the Sun, is extremely rare - just nine of the 35,000 known meteorites, or 0.03%, have this solar composition.

Dr Caroline Smith, meteorite curator at the Natural History Museum (NHM), told BBC News: "These types of meteorite are very susceptible to alteration on Earth. Changes in humidity, for example, can change their composition.

This material represents the crumbs from the foundation of the Solar System. It's an unbelievable opportunity to study it in close-up.

Researchers say the finding makes it slightly more plausible that meteorite bombardments may have seeded ancient Earth with life's raw materials, potentially paving the way for life itself.

Part of the scientific mystery of how life emerged is the origin of chemical building blocks: Were they created by chemical reactions on Earth or did they, perhaps, hitch rides on meteorites that may have germinated

carbon-based compounds that most likely formed in space, including sugars and amino acids

nucleobases were forged in deep space, they were richer in carbon 13—by 44.5 percent for uracil and 37.7 percent for xanthine

building blocks of genetic material, the nucleobases, were available

meteorites contributed to the building blocks of life

very great contribution

Tags: meteorites, origin of life

<clipSource>http://www.sciam.com/article.cfm?id=were-meteorites-the-origi</clipSource>

Extraterrestrial Life Confirmed

clipped by: vk2yoc
clipper's remarks: I always knew I was different.

Clip Source: www.dailygalaxy.com

If you want to see the offspring of extraterrestrial interference in Earth

European and US scientists have proved for the first time two bits of genetic coding, called nucleobases, contained in the meteor fragment, are truly extraterrestrial.

Previous studies had suggested the space rocks, which hit earth about 40 years ago, might have been contaminated upon impact.

Both of the molecules identified, uracil and xanthine, "are present in our DNA and RNA," said lead author Zita Martins, a researcher at Imperial College London.

"We know that meteorites very similar to the Murchison meteorite, which is the one we analysed, were delivering the building blocks of life to earth 3.8 to 4.5 billion years ago," Martins said.

Tags: meteors

<clipSource>http://www.news.com.au/story/0,23599,23861977-23109,00.html</clipSource>

Fighter plane struck by U.F.O in Romania

clipped by: In a unique experiment on a galactic scale, millions of bacterial
spores have been purposely exposed to space, to see how solar radiation
affects them and the results supported the idea that not only could
life have arrived on Earth on meteorites, but that considerable
material has flowed between planets.

Closer to home, scientists have analyzed aerial dust samples collected by Charles Darwin and confirmed that microbes can travel across continents without the need for planes or trains - rather bacteria and fungi hitch-hike by attaching to dust particles. Their results clearly show that diverse microbes, including
ascomycetes, and eubacteria can live for centuries and survive
intercontinental travel.

In a paper published in Environmental Microbiology, Dr. Anna Gorbushina
(Carl-von-Ossietzky University, Oldenburg, Germany), Professor William
Broughton (University of Geneva, Switzerland) and their colleagues
analyzed dust samples collected by Charles Darwin and others almost 200
years ago.

Tags: space

<clipSource>http://www.dailygalaxy.com/my_weblog/2008/05/galactic-microb.html</clipSource>
