Named after the powerful Titan deities of Greek mythology, titanium is as strong as steel but nearly half as light. Because it does not react or interfere with the chemistry of the human body, titanium has been used for decades as a "biomaterial," to augment and replace damaged body parts (including bones and joints).

High-profile athletes have brought titanium products international exposure: At the Summer Olympics in Beijing, many athletes sported titanium-infused necklaces, bracelets and sports tape. Major League Baseball players have also given the products high-profile television exposure.

Phiten's success rests on scientifically unsubstantiated claims that the products can increase circulation, improve recovery time, reduce pain and facilitate the mental focus and stamina required of athletics, the company has had great success

Among the most prominent of these so-called healing metals is titanium.

Projections

1. The housing decline is not yet done, because we will need another year to unwind foreclosures in the pipeline. The housing bubble still has another 10% to 20% to go to fully deflate.

2. Consumers in the U.S. are not able to expand credit and are increasingly concerned about the outlook for the economy, so they will slow spending both at home and on imports, which means we are in a recession or about to confirm one.

3. The financial/banking system is weaker than understood. The global system and literally trillions of dollars in derivatives has left the world’s banks teetering on the edge. Don’t jump back into financials.

4. A slowing economy – recession – coupled with inflation, creates a condition referred to as stagflation, as the simulative bailouts compete with the debt implosion of overleveraged financial institutions and real estate, to leave us with stagnation and still high costs.

Todd Palin Digs into Job Creation for Alaskans

The companies that paid for the flights, a normal means of travel to remote and often roadless parts of Alaska, are both in the early stages of a lengthy approval process.

A month after the first visit, Todd Palin toured the Red Dog Mine, a lead and zinc operation in the northwestern part of the state.

That company is currently seeking permission to mine a new deposit, which would extend the life of the mine to 2031.

On two separate occasions last fall, the husband of the Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin boarded planes chartered by mining companies that want to dig for gold, zinc and lead in remote Alaska valleys.

Palin, a member of the United Steelworkers Local 4959, himself learned on the job. He began working in oil fields on Alaska's North Slope for BP Exploration Alaska in 1989, a year after he eloped with his high school sweetheart.

He took a leave from his position as a production operator at a Prudhoe Bay facility where oil is separated from water and natural gases when his wife became governor but returned six months later.

Todd Palin joined with state officials on the two mining trips, and the costs of his travel were disclosed by his wife as gifts in compliance with state ethics laws. The excursions coincide with a mini metals boom in Alaska fueled by high prices. Two new mines are scheduled to open in coming weeks and months, and four more are on the drawing board

For applications where an extremely fine cutting action is required or for studies where trace metals from ordinary scalpel blades cannot be tolerated, these very special obsidian scalpels may provide the answer. They are so fine that they are used in human surgical procedures where objectionable scar tissue might result from the use of a coarser scalpel. The blade is made from obsidian a type of volcanic glass which allows a much finer blade than is possible with the conventional steel blade. In some cases this makes the relatively inexpensive obsidian scalpel a suitable substitute for an expensive diamond knife. Patterned after "stone-age" knives which first made their appearance about 18,000 years ago, these modern versions utilize hard maple wood dowelling for handles and a special epoxy coating. This seals the joint between the blade and the handle, and enables the knife to be autoclaved.

At least 200 million people around the world risk their health daily by eating food grown using untreated waste water, some of which may be contaminated with heavy metals and raw sewage, according to major study of 53 world cities.

Urban farmers in 80% of the cities surveyed were found to be using untreated waste water, but the study said they also provided vital food for burgeoning cities at a time of unprecedented water scarcity and the worst food crisis in 30 years.

Rapid technological innovations coupled with increasing demand mean more devices with shorter life spans. This electronic waste, or e-waste, is the country's fastest growing waste stream -- increasing at about 3-5 percent each year, according to the United Nations [pdf]. In 2005 we generated 2.63 million tons of the stuff. Most found its way to landfills or incinerators. But neither of these is a good place for this type of waste since it contains toxic materials (such as heavy metals, chlorinated solvents, dioxins, and brominated flame retardants) that can leach into the air, water, and soil.

As a blended fuel, bioethanol reduces emissions of carbon monoxide a number of other pollutants by as much as 25% or more over conventional gasoline.

Advantages

• Bioethanol is already compatible, in low blends, with existing gas engines.

• Bioethanol is a high octane fuel with lower emissions.

Disadvantages

• Bioethanol can be corrosive to metals such as aluminum.

• Bioethanol may require the use of too much arable land (to grow the required crops) and too much energy input during production to justify it. As such, costs—financially, environmentally—are currently prohibitive (see below).

The Future …

The future of bioethanol lies directly with precisely what composes the biomass used in the production process. Many researchers believe its future is with cellulosic ethanol using biomass such as corn stover and switchgrass.

There are really three types of money, hard money, soft money and no-money. Hard money, if there were any, would be gold, silver, or platinum. These are the noble metals and are called hard money because they are hard assets with real universal value. Soft money would be paper money backed by hard money. This would include silver or gold certificates which were backed by silver or gold. It would also include greenbacks. Federal Reserve Notes are often referred to as greenbacks but they are not. Greenbacks were only issued by the Treasury Department at the request of then President Lincoln during the first American civil war. They were backed by silver and were extinguished after the war was over. We do not use hard or soft money anymore.

The third type of money is no-money. That is paper money backed by nothing of value. This is also called fiat money. Really it is not money at all, it is currency.

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (CNN) -- Walking down a street in Cambodia's capital city, Phymean Noun finished her lunch and tossed her chicken bones into the trash. Seconds later, she watched in horror as several children fought to reclaim her discarded food.

she quit her job and started an organization to give underprivileged children an education. Noun spent $30,000 of her own money to get her first school off the ground.
