Eight years ago, when Metallica became the poster band for the clash between the record industry and its fans, the whole thing started when drummer Lars Ulrich personally delivered a massive printout of the names of people who had been sharing Metallica songs on Napster to the company's headquarters.

But with only one record left on its Warner Music Group contract, the Ulrich says Metallica could be planning a digital release along the lines of what Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails have done, as ironic as that might seem.

"You know, this is our last record under contract with Warner, so we're looking at how we can embrace everything," said Ulrich, who pointed out to Rolling Stone during a Record Store Day appearance that the band already allows fans to buy MP3 and FLAC versions of recent live shows and download older shows for free.

British rock band Deep Purple top the list with their 1973 hit Smoke on the Water.

Among the more recent riffs is Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit (1991), in second place, and Wake Up by Rage Against the Machine (1992) in 16th.

The Red Hot Chilli Peppers have two entries, Under The Bridge (1992) at 9 and Give it Away (1991) at 21.

However, not one song written since 2003 made the short list.

Songs by American writers claimed the majority of places in the top 25, but seven of the songs on the list were written by British artists.

The 500 greatest guitar riffs of all time.

A few months ago, I was bored and I decided to make one of those "best of" music lists that sites, shows, and magazines make all the time. So, flash-forward a few months later, I have compiled a list of what I think are the 500 greatest guitar riffs of all time. I've posted a link to each set of twenty that's on my blog. For most of the songs, I've linked a YouTube video (audio quality may vary for each) and a decent guitar tab for the songs. Apologies for the large amount of anime videos that I ended up linking to, often they were the only ones that weren't a lovely live performance.

My process for determining which riff is better than other riffs is that I basically thought to myself, "Hmm, does Song A have a cooler riff than Song B? Yes!" However, I also took into account the riff's influence, how catchy it is, and how fun it is to play on the guitar. I'm posting this list here because music lists usually generate good conversation on GBS.

I obviously have never heard EVERY rock song ever made, but I've heard a lot.

You'll notice that I have a slight bias towards metal.

Also, there are BOUND to be disagreements over which songs should and should not be on here. So go ahead and tell me which riffs I neglected to put on the list. In the future I may make a 2.0 Riff List.

I put a lot of hard work into this. I'd like to think that I put more effort into compiling the list than most list-makers.

Interestingly for Rammstein, Reise, Reise saw a remarkable change in their musical style. One song, for example was mostly acoustic, including harmonica; other songs strayed from the band’s high octane anthemic style toward ballad territory...well, as near to balladry as a huge, booming German can get.

In 2005, Rammstein released their fifth studio album. The album was originally titled Reise, Reise vol 2 as it contained a number of songs recorded and intended for the first volume. With new songs added the band changed the title to [album artist=Rammstein]Rosenrot (Red Rose) and, once again, the critics seem to dislike it. Having read the fans’ reviews on Amazon it seems that they don’t like it either. Their reasons, however, seem silly: it’s as if they don’t want the band to grow and change and are content to listen to brute force guitars and furious anthems without considering the band’s creative direction.

In my opinion, Rosenrot is a great album and very interesting to see where Rammstein are taking their distinctive brand of industrial rock. Opening track, Rammstein – Benzin (Petrol), is a pyromaniac fantasy reminiscent of Metallica’s Metallica – Fuel. Till states throughout the song that he doesn’t need this or that and all he wants is petrol. Of course, it can be viewed as a take on the purpose of the war in iraq or the high fuel charged experienced in europe lately. Rammstein – Mann gegen Mann (Man Against Man) sees Till put himself in the head of a homosexual although there is probably an implied meaning that I haven’t, thus far, deciphered. The title track, [track artist=Rammstein]Rosenrot, blends Goethe’s Heidenröslein with the Grimm’s Snow-White and Rose-Red. Rammstein – Spring (Jump) concerns itself with the story of a man stopping by a bridge to admire the scenery but the onlookers, believing he is about to jump, will him onward.

A video clip of METALLICA rehearsing their cover of BLACK SABBATH's "Iron Man", which they performed at at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony on March 13 at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City, has been posted online. Check it out: 300K, 100K, 56K.

METALLICA members Lars Ulrich and James Hetfield inducted BLACK SABBATH into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and joined their bandmates for a medley of SABBATH songs during the induction ceremony. METALLICA ripped into covers of "Hole in the Sky" and "Iron Man", with Hetfield reaching into his highest register to equal Ozzy Osbourne's signature singing style. (View video footage of METALLICA's performance at this location.) Hetfield and Ulrich, in a heartfelt induction, both said their band would not exist without the example of BLACK SABBATH. Afterward, Hetfield told Rolling Stone, "It was like, 'Oh, no, I'm going to start crying,'" he said. "I'd never known it until I had to access all those emotions in front of that crowd, but it just goes to show how much SABBATH mean." Ozzy Osbourne, in a black velvet jacket and a diamond-encrusted crucifix, summed up METALLICA's tribute: "They did fucking better than great!"

METALLICA Continue Work On New Album, Attend QUEEN Show In California - Apr. 16, 2006

METALLICA are mentioned in the latest issue of Kerrang! magazine, where drummer Lars Ulrich offers a small update on the progress of the songwriting sessions for the band's new album.

According to Ulrich, METALLICA have "six to seven" new songs completed without vocals and have gone back to the old approach of Lars and guitarist/vocalist James Hetfield sifting through riff tapes the band have recorded on hours of jam sessions from the last world tour.

Regarding the band's collaboration with producer Rick Rubin (SLIPKNOT, SYSTEM OF A DOWN, RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS), Lars said that its been good working with him because he sees things in the big picture and it was good to change producers because after 15 years they felt spoiled.

In other news, the Mercury News is reporting that Hetfield and guitarist Kirk Hammett attended a live show by QUEEN at the HP Pavillion in San Jose last week. They hung out backstage and were later introduced to the audience by QUEEN guitarist Brian May.

METALLICA are known to be huge fans of QUEEN, having recorded "Stone Cold Crazy" in 1990 for Elektra's 30th Anniversary compilation album and performed at the Freddie Mercury tribute concert in London in 1992.
