Burned! Washington state woman shot by stove

SEKIU, Wash. (AP) -- A woman in Washington state says her cast-iron stove shot her in the leg.

Cory Davis tells the Peninsula Daily News that she had just stoked the heating stove in her home Sunday when she heard a loud bang and was struck in her left calf.

She says she initially thought "that was one fast hot coal flying at me."

In fact, she was hit by part of a 22-gauge shotgun shell that she had accidentally put into the stove with newspapers she used to light it. A box of shells had spilled nearby a few weeks before.

Davis says she removed the metal fragment herself Sunday and sought treatment for the shallow wound the next day.

Are the differences in how pans heat and release really significant? Would I improve the odds of getting my favorite potato galette to slip intact from the pan if I used something other than my usual stainless-coated aluminum?

To find out, I experimented for a few days with a dozen or so different pans, some old and some new. I learned that metals and surfaces do matter, but so do fat and heat management.

The prices ranged from $25 for the new aluminum nonsticks to as much as $480 for French copper.

First I wanted to see what difference the kind of metal makes in how the pans heat up. Copper conducts heat twice as fast as aluminum, and five times faster than cast iron. But the copper and iron pans each weigh more than five pounds, while the thinnest aluminum pan weighs barely two. Is lots of expensive copper better than a little cheap aluminum?

Clueless smugglers find 'gold' is uranium

All that glisters is not gold. In some cases it is depleted uranium.

Three Chinese men found this out when they came across a lump of shiny metal in a scrapyard in Bishkek, in neighbouring Kyrgyzstan, last year.

The men smuggled the 274kg (604lb) object across the border and into China and hid it in the home of the father-in-law of one of the men in the westernmost Xinjiang region.

One thing puzzled them. At night, a report on a local government website said, “they were surprised that, when the lights went out, the treasure sparkled and glittered”.

The only known surviving chain of office from the time of Henry VIII is being put up for auction.

The king gave the gold Coleridge Collar to one of his closest advisers, Sir Edward Montagu, around 1546.

The chains showed allegiance to the monarch and the intricacy of the design and quality of the metal signified the status of the wearer.

It is expected to fetch £300,000 when it goes under the hammer at Christie's in London on 6 November.

It will be the first time that the Coleridge Collar, thought to be of the most important surviving relics of the Tudor age, has come up for auction.

This type of livery collar, as it was known, became popular when they were used by Henry IV as an official symbol of allegiance to the monarch.

Acey Slade, former Murderdolls guitarist and Wednesday 13’s touring axe-man, has announced two new music projects in the works fusing horror-themed metal to electronic beats, with a glammed-up twist.

First off, a limited-run EP – dubbed Sex, Murder, Art Baby! – is made up of remixes done in collaboration with several horror-rock heavyweights – including Rob Zombie’s bassist Piggy D, Kaiser von Loopy from industrial-metal maniacs Hanzel Und Gretyl, Deathstars’ Jonas “Skinny Disco” Kangur, and the oh-so-psycho DJ Speedranch.

For double the destruction, Slade is also near completion of a full-length electro-metal album tentatively titled Dark Party, co-produced by Slade (who handles guitars and vocals) and acclaimed drum ‘n’ bass producer Shaun “Stakka” Morris (mixing and programming).

The remix EP is coming soon, and the album is scheduled for early next year. Start fearing for your sanity now!

The villages near the town of Mokopane, located in the province of Limpopo in the northernmost tip of South Africa, contain abundant wealth, but many of their residents reside in homes without foundations and have no access to water.

The sleepy settlements live in the shadow of one of South Africa's most successful enterprises - platinum mining.

About 90 per cent of the world's platinum reserves are in southern Africa.

Anglo Platinum, the world's largest platinum producer, made a record $1.75bn in profits last year alone, primarily selling the metal to car firms making catalytic converters.

The South African government directly benefits via nearly $2bn in taxes it receives from Anglo Platinum.

Yet, their search for the valuable resource has caused about 20,000 South Africans to be displaced.

For those who have remained in their homes it has caused enduring harm and bitterness.

STUART WATSON / NewsChannel 36: Fort Mill Mayor Danny Funderburk says he was “just curious” when he forwarded a chain e-mail suggesting Democratic Presidential Candidate Barack Obama is the biblical antichrist. “I was just curious if there was any validity to it,” Funderburk said in a telephone interview. “I was trying to get documentation if there was any scripture to back it up.”

Funderburk apparently sent the e-mail from his business account at Gastonia Sheet Metal where he works as a business agent. The e-mail, which has circulated in the last six months since Obama secured the Democratic nomination, claims the biblical book of Revelation says the antichrist will be in his 40s and of Muslim ancestry.

There is no such scripture. And Obama is not a Muslim. But that hasn’t stopped the e-mail. The urban legend Web site Snopes.com first exploded the myth in March. Funderburk forwarded the e-mail this month.

While heavy metal and punk were making waves in music during the 1980s, Prince pushed the envelope in a different direction. Celebrating both sexual freedom and ambiguity, Prince combined a feminine pose with overt phallic imagery. Believe it or not, the shot was spontaneous: the photographer Jean-Baptiste Mondino suggested Prince go nude just before the session.

This album made Tipper Gore’s “filthy fifteen” list when she crusaded against “porn-rock” in the mid-1980s. By organizing the Parents’ Music Resource Center, she encouraged the Recording Industry Association of America to adopt an explicit content labeling policy to protect minors.

The rock band reflects their stripped-down sound with this none-more-black cover, known to fans simply as “the black album.” The album marked the band’s transition from heavy metal to mainstream.

Free-piston engine could be twice as fuel efficient as combustion engines

Free-piston engines do away with the crankshaft: the pistons aren't connected to anything. Instead, two opposing pistons just shuttle back and forth inside a chamber. To generate electricity, the pistons could be equipped with rows of magnets that shuttle past metal coils to create an electrical current.

Sandia National Laboratory led by Sandia researcher Peter Van Blarigan that has been testing physical components of free-piston engines which could be 50% efficient. This is about twice as good as current gas combustion engines and about as efficient as fuel cells. Fuel cells are too expensive. He is assembling a complete free-piston engine prototype, a project that he expects to complete within a year.

We're all familiar with hubcaps as the utilitarian devices that cover our wheels, helping travelers everywhere roll around in style. But one artist has found a new purpose for these protective pieces of metal: fashioning fantastical animals out of what used to be rubbish.

All of Ptolemy's creations are made exclusively from 100% recycled materials. This means that everything that is now a sculpture, used to be spinning around on the wheels of a car, so the metal bears all the scratches and abrasions from it's former life, just like a real creature would.

To see one of these metallic beauties in person, you'll have to travel to the UK area: most of the hubcap creatures can be found crawling on the walls or clinging to the ceiling in pubs and stores around Brighton.
