The serious Neuroanthropologist probably does too! But what the heck, I put them here just for fun! Mind you, the list might lead to some interesting questions about what could be considered the definitive TOP 10 FOR BRAIN HEALTH applicable across cultures!>>>
(article author).
There are grains of truth floating about in this fun , of course. I infer the writer is inviting readers to confirm the state of their own mental fitness by indulging in a healthy demolition of such breezy tips lists. I'd say you should be able to rattle off ten major objections to the list fairly quickly if your mental health is robust.

Clip Source: neuroanthropology.net

1. Analysis found that participants who were more physically fit had less brain shrinkage than less-fit participants. However, they didn't do significantly better on tests for mental performance.

That was a surprise, but maybe the study had too few patients to make an
effect show up in the statistical analysis, said Dr. Jeffrey Burns, one of the
study's authors.

the work is only a starting point for exploring whether exercise and physical
fitness can slow the progression of Alzheimer's.
The study can't prove an effect because the participants were evaluated only
once rather than repeatedly over time, he said.

The study included 57 people with early Alzheimer's. Their physical fitness was assessed by measuring their peak oxygen demand while on a treadmill, and brain shrinkage was estimated by MRI scans.

<clipSource>http://static-p3.fotolia.com/jpg/00/06/75/24/400_F_6752429_krGYmLNS6nEhq09ijSqJwq0ngzT316ab.jpg</clipSource>

cooking fat low

clipped by: conner1
clipper's remarks: Weight loss is accompanied by unstable thirst and hunger, which may indicate diabetes mellitus. Children who speak a second or third language may have an unexpected advantage later in life, a new Tel Aviv University study has found. Knowing and speaking many languages may protect the brain against the effects of aging.

Dr. Gitit Kavé, a clinical neuro-psychologist from the Herczeg Institute on Aging at Tel Aviv University, together with her colleagues Nitza Eyal, Aviva Shorek, and Jiska Cohen-Manfield, discovered recently that senior citizens who speak more languages test for better cognitive functioning. The results of her study were published in the journal Psychology and Aging.

A person who speaks more languages is likely to be more clear-minded at an older age, she says, in effect “exercising” his or her brain more than those who are monolingual. Languages may create new links in the brain, contributing to this strengthening effect.

Brain researchers for the first time claim to have found a method for improving the general problem-solving ability scientists call fluid intelligence, otherwise known as "smarts."

Fluid intelligence was previously thought to be genetically hard-wired, but the finding suggests that with about 25 minutes of rigorous mental training a day, healthy adults could improve their mental capacities.

The method, if commercialized, could be a boon to the growing, multimillion-dollar market for "brain fitness" software like Nintendo's Brain Age.

Fluid intelligence measures how people adapt to new situations and solve problems they've never seen before. Fluid intelligence differs from crystallized intelligence, which takes into account skills and knowledge that have been acquired -- like vocabulary, grammar and math.

In a limited trial, he and his team were able to make 34 test subjects significantly better at answering IQ test questions after training them on a completely separate memory task.

Tags: intelligence, self improvement, learning

<clipSource>http://www.wired.com/science/discoveries/news/2008/04/smart_software</clipSource>

The Hedonistic Imperative

clipped by: Silkweaver
clipper's remarks: This manifesto outlines a strategy to eradicate suffering in all sentient life. The abolitionist project is ambitious, implausible, but technically feasible. It is defended here on ethical utilitarian grounds. Genetic engineering and nanotechnology allow Homo sapiens to discard the legacy-wetware of our evolutionary past. Our post-human successors will rewrite the vertebrate genome, redesign the global ecosystem, and abolish suffering throughout the living world.

Clip Source: hedweb.com

The Hedonistic
Imperative outlines how genetic engineering and nanotechnology will abolish suffering in all sentient life.

The abolitionist project is hugely ambitious
but technically feasible. It is also instrumentally rational and
morally urgent. The metabolic pathways of pain and
malaise evolved because they served the fitness of our
genes in the ancestral environment. They will be replaced by a different sort of
neural architecture - a motivational system based on heritable gradients of bliss. States of sublime well-being are destined to
become the genetically pre-programmed norm of mental health. It is predicted that the world's last unpleasant experience will be a precisely dateable event.

The feasibility of its abolition turns its deliberate
retention into an issue of social policy and ethical choice.
