Britons are among the ugliest people in the world, according to a dating website that says it only allows "beautiful people" to join.

Fewer than one in eight British men and just three in 20 women who have applied to BeautifulPeople.com have been accepted, an emailed statement from the website showed.

Existing members of the "elite dating site" rate how attractive potential members are over a 48 hour period, after applicants upload a recent photo and personal profile.

Swedish men have proved the most successful, with 65 per cent being accepted, while Norwegian women are considered the most beautiful with 76 per cent accepted, the website said.

The way that BeautifulPeople.com accepts new members is simple. A potential member applies with a photo and a brief profile. Over 48 hours, existing members of the opposite sex vote whether or not to admit them, the site said.

Options are: "Yes definitely," "Hmm yes, OK" "Hmm no, not really" and "No definitely not."

Masculinity beliefs impacting men's health

Men that are middle-aged and who strongly idealize masculinity are almost 50 percent less likely than other men to seek healthcare services, according to a study presented at the annual meeting of the American Sociological Association.

"This research strongly suggests that deep-seated masculinity beliefs are one core cause of men's poor health, in as much as they reduce compliance with recommended preventative health services," said Kristen W. Springer, the study's primary researcher.

The study also noted that education - despite its well-established beneficial effect on health behaviors - also was a moderating factor. Highly educated men with the strongest-held masculinity beliefs were just as unlikely to obtain preventative care as men with lower levels of education.

She concluded by emphasizing the need for more research using samples with greater diversity.

Sugar causes testosterone to plummet

Sugary foods can cause testosterone levels to drop by as much as 25 percent, regardless of whether a man has diabetes or normal glucose tolerance. The new findings mean that men with low testosterone should have their hormone levels retested after they fast overnight, as eating may transiently lower them, say the researchers.

Previous research showed that a high level of insulin, the hormone primarily secreted after eating, is related to low testosterone levels. Like eating, glucose intake causes blood glucose (sugar) levels to rise, which stimulates the secretion of insulin. In the new study, the researchers examined the impact of a standard dose of glucose on testosterone levels in 74 men.

"More research is needed to find the factor or factors responsible for this drop in testosterone,"

While oral medications like Viagra (known as PDE-5 inhibitors) have revolutionized the treatment of erectile dysfunction, unfortunately not all men respond to these drugs.

But men who don't respond to oral medications shouldn't give up hope, says urologist Jack Mydlo, of the Temple University School of Medicine. He believes that when erectile medications fail, combination therapy might be the answer. "Medication used with other non-surgical treatments, such as pumps, injections or urethral suppositories, offers a safe and effective alternative for the small but significant portion of the population for whom oral medication alone doesn't work," he said.

Even with the use of erectile dysfunction (ED) medications, obese men may not able to achieve erections adequate for intercourse

the build-up of atherosclerotic plaque in the arteries of obese men can damage arterial linings and lower testosterone levels - both of which increase the risk of ED. Previous studies have shown that weight loss and increased physical activity can improve ED.

In the article, the researchers, from the University of Colorado Denver and the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, describe a 48-year-old man with mild obesity (weight = 197 lbs, body mass index = 32.6 kg/m2 ) and hypertension who suffered from ED. Even with the use of common ED medications he was unable to achieve an erection adequate for intercourse.

After analysing six million insurance quotes between June 2008 and June 2009, the website found that, on average, men pay £885.86 a year for motor coverage, compared to the £517.37 paid by women.

Steve Sweeny, head of motor insurance at the website, said historically, men have had to pay a higher premium than women, who many companies consider them as being safer and more mature motorists.

The largest discrepancy came for the under-20s, a category perceived by insurers to be high-risk, with 18 year old men paying £2,318.83, which is almost double the £1,237.33 paid by young women.
